10 Easy Peasy Beauty Hacks For Students

18 Jan 2017 by Teenage

Heading back to school? Arm yourself with these super easy beauty tips and tricks that actually work!

#1 Beachy Waves With Overnight Braids

Want beachy waves but have no idea how to create them? Go to bed with your hair plaited into braids – the smaller the braid, the tighter the curl. Before heading out the next day, run a straightener over each plait before shaking ’em loose. #iwokeuplikethis

#2 Remove Nail Polish With Nail Polish

Did you know that you can remove existing nail polish with more polish? Simply layer on a fresh coat, wait a few seconds and wipe it off with a cotton pad. Repeat till there’s no residue left.

#3 Tightline To Brighten Up Eyes

Instead of labouring over creating the perfect cat eye, brighten up your peepers in an instant by lining your waterline with a water- and smudge-proof pencil eyeliner. Follow up with mascara to open up tired eyes even further.

#4 Doubling Clear Lipgloss As Highlighter

Swap highlighter with a clear lipgloss for a subtle, (and more affordable) dewy glow. Pat it on, set with clear powder and you’re good to go.

#5 Save Time Spent On Makeup Routine

Save the easier parts of your makeup routine for when you’re commuting – lipstick, blush or even mascara can be discretely applied. Have a pack of wet wipes/tissues handy, just in case.

#6 Hand Sanitiser As Emergency Deodorant

Sweating up a storm with no deodorant in sight? Apply a squirt of antibacterial hand sanitiser onto your armpits – it’ll neutralise any funky odour thanks to the rubbing alcohol.

#7 DIY Tinted Moisturiser

Running out of foundation? Create a high-coverage tinted moisturiser by mixing the foundation with a small amount of lightweight moisturiser.

#8 Emergency Makeup Remover

If you don’t have makeup remover handy, clean up smudged makeup with moisturiser or vaseline with a cotton swab.

#9 Using Blush To Contour

Pull double-duty on your blusher and warm up your complexion by using it as a contour. Peach/nude shades work well. Work it onto your brow bones, temples and sides of your mug and buff well till it blends into your complexion.

#10 Run Through Cold Water For Shiny Hair

Ever wonder why the Korea ladies (even the lads) always seem to have that perfect glowy skin? First, start taking care of your skin early! Don’t wait for those lines/spots to start showing and then start panicking by buying the most expensive cream you can find and hope it works. Secondly, most of them follow this strict beauty regime which we are going to share with you with our recommended products!

Step 1: The Eye Makeup Remover

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water For Even Waterproof Mascara

Remove your eye makeup gently with the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water For Even Waterproof Mascara ($19.90), because your cleanser may not do a thorough job on those waterproof mascaras and long-wear lipsticks. The last thing you want to do is tug the skin around your eyes and lips without removing all the product.

Step 2: The Cleanse

Neutrogena Deep Cleansing Oil-to-Foam

If you’re going to spend so much time caking makeup on your face, you better make some time to remove them afterwards! Reach for a cleanser like the Neutrogena Deep Cleansing Oil-to-Foam ($30.90) and use gentle, circular motions with your fingers to massage and remove all that gunk.

Step 3: The Exfoliator

Exfoliating two to four times a month with a natural mask like the innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask ($21), and bring back your smooth-as-baby-butt skin. This mask removes sebum and minimises pores at the same time, plus you may want to concentrate on zones where black/white heads pop up often and exterminate them!

Step 4: The Refresher

For Beloved One Melasleep Brightening Lumi's Key Toner

Toners or refreshers help remove pollutants along with any residue from your cleansers, while restoring your skin’s pH balance. Try the For Beloved One Melasleep Brightening Lumi’s Key Toner ($60) for a whitening effect; it contains Vitamin B3 which enhances the skin barrier function.

Step 5: The Essence

ETUDE HOUSE Honey Cera Essence

The essence is considered the most important step to Korean women – we recommend the ETUDE HOUSE Honey Cera Essence ($39.90). This highly concentrated, nourishing essence adheres closely to skin like real honey does and penetrates deep into the skin to enhance elasticity and improve wrinkle conditions.

Step 6: The Ampoule

ETUDE HOUSE Pink Vital Water Serum

Ampoules or serums are super-concentrated versions of essences. Providing moisturising power similar to that of a heavy-duty cream-based product, the ETUDE HOUSE Pink Vital Water Serum ($26.90) spreads out as water drop particles and absorbs easily into skin. The serum provides intense moisture while retaining a light texture.

Step 7: The Sheet Mask

Sheet masks are a twice-a-week ritual, or more if your skin is very dry. THEFACESHOP Real Nature Avocado Mask Sheet ($2) contains avocado extract that helps to provide extra nutrition, while revitalising dry and rough skin. The secret to sheet masks? They force your skin to absorb the nutrients and moisture better than if you just applied a cream or serum, before the product has a chance to evaporate!

Step 8: The Eye Cream

Laneige Water Bank Eye Gel

People always say that the eyes are the windows to our soul, but it’s also usually the part that gives away our age! Protect those peepers with the Laneige Water Bank Eye Gel ($49), which relieves stress on the skin around the eyes. Enriched with nourishing Bilberry extracts, this moisture-rich eye gel replenishes moisture and helps to reduce under-eye puffiness while soothing the tired eye area by relieving stress and tension.

Step 9: The Moisturiser

belif The True Cream Moisturising Bomb

Hang in there, you’re almost there! The belif The True Cream Moisturising Bomb ($54) is a comforting moisture cream that provides the skin with intense, soothing hydration. Clinically tested to provide up to 26 hours of moisture, this uniquely indulgent formula leaves skin soft, supple, and deeply moisturised. The cushiony cream can be absorbed completely without any sticky residue!

Step 10: The Night Cream

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask

By now, you might feel that your face is like a kuey lapis with all those products, but trust us, it’s all worth it for that dewy glow. For the final step, lock in moisture and repair skin while you sleep with the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask ($42)! This intensive moisture sleep mask leaves the skin clear and revitalised the next morning.

6 Causes Of Pimple Outbreaks

6 Oct 2016 by Teenage

Pimples can be annoying, but before you blame it solely on hormones, here are some things that could be the cause of your acne.

#1 Stress

Stress-AcneCredit: Getty

This is kind of a no-brainer, but stress from school, family or relationships can cause hormonal fluctuations. This means a higher amount of sebum your skin secretes, contributing to the bacterial infection that can lead to pimples.

#2 Touching your face

We all have our quirks. Some of us like twirling our hair, while other pick at nails or cuticles. One of the worst habits for your skin would be to touch it frequently. There are millions of bacterial on your hands and if you keep touching your face, there’s bound to be more pimples. Resting your head on your palms counts as touching your face too.

#3 Your phone

We hate to say this but there might be a reason why you’re getting blemishes on your cheeks and jawlines. Most of us are addicted to our phones (we’re not surprised if you’re actually viewing this on your mobile right now), and while you’re swiping and tapping, bacteria and sebum is left on your phone screen. We don’t need to tell you what happens to these things when you answer your phone.

#4 Sleep deprivation

Lack of sleep or irregular sleeping hours leads to an increase in the body’s production of cortisol, responsible for an increase in the production of sebum. When your skin is oily, there’s a likelihood that your pores would get clogged and inflamed.

#5 Your diet

Stress-AcneCredit: Getty

Studies have shown that dairy products and carbohydrate-rich food such as bread and chips may trigger acne. Experts suspect that chocolate may be the reason why one’s acne problem worsens. Till date, experts are still unsure why this happens or whether patients with acne problem have to be on a strict diet. Just try to cut down on those unhealthy snacks, better to be safe than sorry.

#6 Dehydration

Water is essential for flushing out toxins and promoting good circulation. When you don’t drink enough water, skin lacks moisture and often compensates by producing more sebum in a bid to keep it hydrated. The same can be said for those who claim that they have oily skin – it could be just lacking in moisture, so remember to hydrate it with a water-based moisturiser.
