Up your brow game from ‘fleek’ to ‘fierce’ with these handy tips from brow experts Jared Bailey and Rochelle Paz of Benefit Cosmetics!
#1: The Perfect Brow Is One That Flatters Your Face
Whether it’s straight Korean brows or perfectly lined Instagram arches, some trends are not universally flattering. “I think the perfect brow is different on every face. It’s a brow that flatters people’s features and doesn’t overpower it,” Jared shares, “The brows should never be the big, focal point of the face. It should serve to accentuate the natural curvature of the face.”
#2 You Can Use Makeup To Change The Shape Of Your Brows
“If you don’t like the shape of your brows, that’s what makeup is for right? I wouldn’t suggest altering that natural shape but you can go to a brow bar to help enhance that natural shape, to clean up outlying hairs, hairs that bring your eye shape down, and hairs that are really distracting to your brow shape.” Jared continues, “You can either enhance your brow shape with a pencil or add strokes to bring them closer together, or even take a cream to extend the link of your brows. I always encourage people – that if there’s something you don’t like about it, don’t try to do something permanent. Do something fun.”
#3 Switch Up Your Brow Tools
Whether you’re that makeup junkie who’s always on the go or whether you only have that one brow product, simply switching up your tools will go a long way to creating different brow looks. When asked about which brow product he’d pick to use for the rest of his life, Jared reasoned, “I would go with one that’s very versatile, the Benefit Foolproof Brow Powder. The thing with being “foolproof”, it’s a powder that comes with a blending sponge so that it can be really soft and natural. But you could also use a hard-angled brush to create super defined and crisp brows [with powder].” He adds, “It depends on what tool you use to apply it with. You can watch most pro-makeup artists who use powders to do something super defined, then you see novices use brow powder to create something super soft-looking.”
#4 There’s Always A Product For Your Different Brow Needs
Amongst their arsenal of cosmetics, Benefit’s brow products are definite standouts. “We start with the ‘problem’ and then we work backwards to create the solution. That’s really been the way every product has been created at Benefit since day one.” Jared shared, “The way we think of our products are these instant beauty solutions. If you have unruly hair, we created a clear brow gel. If you have sparse brows, we created a primer that actually has grains that help make your hair look thicker, fuller and healthier. If you have flat or dull brows, and you need dimension, we created the ‘Browtones’. If you have gaps, we created the powder. So everything goes back to a problem that it’s gonna solve.”
#5 Don’t Worry About Them Scars
We asked Rochelle about the hardest brow problems to solve (in her opinion), and judging by her answer, there isn’t any brow issue that is too difficult to fix! “There are some women who have scars on their brows after getting into an accident. Because hair won’t grow back anymore, it will leave an empty space there. So we always recommend them to use Benefit’s ka-BROW! eyebrow cream-gel color because it is very thick and pigmented – it can be pressed onto the skin to cover up the sparse spaces and enhance the hairs at the same time.
#6 Rocking Brows With Coloured Hair
Those with brightly coloured tresses would know the struggle of finding the correct brow shade that matches both the face and hair. While some have tried dying their eyebrows to match, Jared advises against that method. “Try going with the undertones of the hair. If your hair is a cooler colour, use cooler tones to fill in your brows. If it’s a warmer colour, use brow products with warmer tones.” Jared continues, “And depending on the actual colour of the brow hair, that’s when you know if you need a lighter, medium or deeper shade. If your brow hair is dark, use a deep and cool colour. If it’s a cool colour and it’s light, use a light cool colour.”
