What's Causing Your Body Acne?

23 Jun 2016 by Teenage

Body acne can be embarrassing, uncomfortable and tough to get rid of – especially if you have them at the oddest, most hard to reach places. And because prevention is much better than cure, here are some insights to what’s causing your body acne (and how to eliminate them for good).

#1 Sweat

Men using weight machines in fitness center

Regular gym-goers might have figured this one out already, but sweat is a common cause for body acne breakouts, especially if it sits on the skin for too long. Whether you’re hitting the gym or simply doing rigorous, perspiration-inducing activities, make sure to hit the showers once you’re done or wipe away sweat whenever possible with a clean cloth. Additionally, gym equipment is riddled with acne-causing bacteria, so do bring along antibacterial wipes to thoroughly wipe down the machines before using them.

#2 Unhealthy diet

Much like facial blemishes, body acne can also be caused by what you eat. For example, chest acne is thought to be caused by poor eating habits and/or digestive problems. Try staying away from drinking brain-freeze level beverages, spicy food that can throw off your skin’s P.H levels, and start including more fibre in your daily diet.

#3 Dirty Sheets

USA, New Jersey, Young woman spreading sheet on bed

As you sleep, oil, dead skin cells and sweat collects on your sheets, which is pretty gross even though you can’t see it with the naked eye. Changing your linens regularly (ideally once a week) helps keep your body acne-free. The cleaner your sheets are, the lower the chances of anything clogging up your pores and causing acne. Go for lightweight cotton as it traps less icky stuff compared to thicker materials. The same goes for your clothing as well, so make sure to dump your clothes in the wash after every wear.

#4 Shaving

Shaving doesn’t only cause painful ingrown hairs – it may also cause skin irritation, which might lead to body acne if the shaved area hasn’t been effectively rid of dirt and bacteria beforehand. The next time you grab your razor, make sure you are showered clean – avoid using scented shaving creams as they can also aggravate your skin.

#5 Tight-fitting Clothing

Tight clothing is one of the most common irritants for body acne. It holds sweat and oil against your skin, blocking the pores and causing acne to flare up. Wear looser clothes and avoid anything that may cause additional friction against your skin like bra straps or heavy bag straps.

#6 Sensitive Skin

If your skin is prone to acne breakouts and irritants, use body washes that are formulated to treat blemishes and are safe for sensitive skin, like the T3 Acne Body Wash ($22.20) instead of regular soaps when you shower. It contains tea tree oil which is an effective treatment for stubborn acne and helps with unclogging pores and preventing the formation of scarring caused by pimples. Follow up with the T3 Body Scrub ($12.20), which also helps in sloughing away dead skin cells and prevents dirt buildup. Do note that you should only use body scrubs once or twice a week as over-exfoliating will irritate the skin further.

T3 products are available at Pink Beauty, Unity, Watsons and other beauty houses.

5 Easy Ways To Treat Sunburn

20 Jun 2016 by Venetia Sng

Despite applying and reapplying that sunscreen to protect your precious skin from sun damage, you still end up with this painful, itching, and swelling sunburn. Don’t let it spoil your holidays! Here are 5 easy ways you can treat that sunburn effectively!

#1 Avoid Soap

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

The last thing you want to do after getting a sunburn is to strip your skin of moisture and irritate your skin further, and bathing with regular body wash does just that. If you must use soap, go for something mild like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($21.90), avoid hot baths for the time being and shower in cold water for some sunburn relief.

Tip: Gently pat your skin dry after showering, rubbing causes the skin to be more irritated!

#2 Tea Bag Those Eyes

Treating Sunburn Tea Bag

Have burned and swollen eyelids? Whip out those tea bags, soak it in cool water and let it rest on your eyelids to decrease swelling and for some relief. Tea contains tannic acid which contains ingredients that have a protective effect on the skin.

#3 Aloe Vera Goodness

Treating Sunburn Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is our go-to remedy whenever we have sunburns. Trust us, it’s the most effective home remedy we’ve tried. Simply break off a leaf, remove the skin and apply the juice onto areas you wish to treat. It may be slimy but no frets, it’ll dry up in no time and you can wash it off with water right before heading to bed. Do test a small area first to make sure you’re not allergic.

Tip: Get an aloe vera plant for the house, it doesn’t get any fresher than that. Plus, pay just once for the plant and get a lifetime supply of aloe vera – that is if you take good care of the plant and it doesn’t die.

#4 Moisturise

Nivea Intensive Moisture Body Milk

No matter sunburns or not, moisturising skin with body lotion is one of the most important things everyone should do. While your skin is still damp, apply the body lotion, we recommend Nivea Intensive Moisture Body Milk ($9.90), for maximum absorption.

Tip: Chill the lotion in the fridge for added relief.

#5 Stay Hydrated

Treating Sunburn Watermelon

We all know water is essential for good skin so rehydrate yourself by drinking extra liquids! You can try sports drinks which helps replenish electrolytes immediately or go for that extra serving of fruits. One large wedge of watermelon provides more than 1 cup of water. Always remember that a balanced diet helps provide the nutrients your skin needs to regenerate.

6 Jun 2016 by Venetia Sng

If you’re new to makeup and don’t have a beauty regime (yet), no worries ’cause we’ve got you covered from head to toe. Tried and tested, read on to find out why these products are worthy to be hailed as holy grail products!

Benefit The POREfessional Face Primer, $54

Benefit The POREfessional Face Primer

In Singapore’s humid weather, makeup would often ‘melt’ off our faces once we’re out in the open for too long, making it frustrating for every lady who has spent so much effort putting it on. With a long-staying makeup primer like Benefit’s The POREfessional Face Primer, appearance of pores and fine lines will be minimised for matte, flawless skin all-day. This lightweight balm can be applied over or under makeup, but we’d recommend under if you don’t wanna mess up the rest of your face.

Laneige BB Cushion [Pore Control] (SPF 50+ / PA+++), $59

Laneige BB Cushion Pore Control

We’re sure you’ve heard of BB cream and Laneige upped the game even further with the BB Cushion. Instead of having to squeeze out the product, dab the puff on strategic spots and blend it all over your face. What we also love about this BB Cushion is that not only does it refines and covers up unsightly pores, it also protects your skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays!

Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Definition Powder Foundation, $53

Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Definition Powder Foundation

Foundation powder is not a must for youthful skin, but if needed, the Naked Skin Ultra Definition Powder Foundation provides weightless coverage with a luminous, semi-matte finish. The best part? Although Urban Decay claims that the powder can last for eight hours, many reviews have testified that it can actually last up to ten hours without caking up in our mad weather. Awesome or what?

Nars Orgasm Blush, $50

Nars Orgasm Blush

NARS Orgasm Blush is the best-selling blush of all-time, and it’s not hard to see why. Worldly recognised as a cult classic, it offers a natural, healthy-looking colour that immediately brightens up your complexion. And with its strong pigmentation, just a light application and it delivers a high-intensity yet natural-looking flush.

Etude House Drawing Eye Brow, $5.90

Etude House Drawing Eyebrow

Not all cult/holy grail beauty products have to be expensive, and Etude House Drawing Eye Brow is a great example. Fill your brows with the fuss-free pencil and then use the brush on the other end to neaten up those brow hair. It’s so good, you don’t really need anything else for your brows.

L’Oréal Paris Super Liner Black Lacquer, $20.90

L'Oréal Paris Super Liner Black Lacquer

When it comes to black liquid eyeliner, L’Oréal Paris Super Liner Black Lacquer is possibly the only liquid eyeliner we’ll ever use. First, you don’t have to apply it multiple times to achieve that black – once is all you need. Second, you’d be impressed by how fast it dries on your lids – no more fanning half-closed eyes! Third, the sponge tip pen gives good control to the user and allows creation of fine lines or thick sultry flicks. Last but not least, it doesn’t smudge even on the oiliest lids! Are you sold yet?

Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara, $34

Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara

Say bye bye to smudging mascara with Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara! This waterproof mascara is probably one of the best we’ve tried so far. It has survived morning workouts, weekend yoga sessions and even a few laps in the pool! It simply won’t budge even in extreme sweaty or wet conditions. Also, the brush ensures clump-free application and there’s added fibre in the formula to enhance volume.

VDL Expert Lip Cube SPF10, $35

VDL Expert Lip Cube SPF10

How many of you find it hard to apply lipstick due to the blunt shape of the product? VDL Expert Lip Cube SPF10 makes applying lipstick as easy as ABC. The cubic shape reaches and covers all angles of your lips with ease and the lipstick maintains its shape from beginning to end. And that’s not all! It’s highly pigmented, long lasting, slides on like smooth butter and contains SPF10 to protect the lips from ageing.

Bioré Aqua Jelly Makeup Remover, $24.90

Biore Aqua Jelly Makeup Remover

Out of all the makeup removers we’ve tried, Bioré Aqua Jelly Makeup Remover is easily one of the best. It removes the toughest waterproof makeup like a breeze. All you need to do is to pump the jelly-like serum onto your hands, spread and gently massage the makeup off your face, wash it off and you’re all done! The gentle formula reduces tugging and protects the skin from an otherwise harsh cleansing motion.

Vaseline Healthy White SPF24 Triple Lightening Body Lotion, $11.80

We cannot emphasise enough on how important it is to moisturise and protect your skin against the harmful sun rays. How convenient it is to have a body lotion that does just that? Hiruscar Post Acne, $22.90

Hiruscar Post Acne

As we get older, scars and dark marks left by acne tend to recover slower as our regenerative rate slows. No frets ’cause you can get rid of those awful scars and marks with Hiruscar Post Acne gel! The anti-bacterial formula helps lighten dark marks, improves the appearance of depressed scars and prevent acne recurrence. Just be diligent and apply it onto the affected area two to three times daily.

THEFACESHOP Real Nature Face Mask, 5 for $10

TheFaceShop Real Nature Face Mask-1

We never step out of THEFACESHOP without buying a handful of face masks. Butter London Patent Shine 10x Lacquer, $28

Butter London Patent Shine 10x Lacquer

Though Butter London Patent Shine 10x Lacquer is a tad bit pricey for a nail polish, you do get what you pay for! It is chip resistant, protects and strengthens nails, has a gel-like finish, can last up to 10 days, and best of all, doesn’t need a base and/or top coat. All you need is one coat of this lacquer and it achieves the opaqueness that you’d usually get from two to three coats with a regular nail polish.

Sally Hansen Nail Polish Remover, $6

Sally Hansen Nail Polish Remover

When it comes to nail polish remover, we definitely need a good one that won’t ruin/dry out our nails and Sally Hansen does just that. They offer so many kinds of removers to cater to our different types of nails, like a Salon Formula for sensitive and artificial nails and Strengthening for weak and thin nails. Our favourite has to be the Extra Strength as it removes the nail polish super quickly without harming our nails!
