14 Common Beauty Mistakes You Might Be Making

6 Apr 2016 by Venetia Sng

We have all made beauty blunders, but sometimes it’s such a norm that we do them over and over again without even registering that it’s actually wrong. Ahead, we list down the most common beauty mistakes most of us make so that you won’t slip up like we did.

#1 Not Washing Makeup Brushes

Yes it’s a hassle, but if you don’t want any break outs or even get an eye infection, then we recommend you wash those brushes at least once a month. Dip the brush in warm, soapy water, rinse it, blot the brush with a clean towel, then use a hair dryer to dry the bristles gently.

#2 Concealer That’s Too Light

Too many of us suffer from the reverse racoon look by using eye concealers that are too light. No matter if it’s for the under eye or to cover up blemishes, concealers should be as close to your natural skin tone as possible in order to blend properly.

#3 Applying Eyeliner Over Tear Duct

Moisture from the tear ducts might cause your eyeliner to smudge throughout the day. Plus it isn’t funny when you get a blocked or infected tear duct, so avoid drawing your liner over the inner corners of your eyes.

#4 Foundation That Doesn’t Match Skin Tone

We know many of you (us included) have made this mistake of using a foundation that doesn’t match your skin tone. Instead of just getting one that looks about right, get a store staff to help you find the perfect shade.

#5 Not Prepping For Lipstick

Exfoliate your lips if they are chapped and always apply lip balm before putting on any lip colour. No one likes to look at peeling lips no matter how pretty the colour is.

#6 Applying Hair Conditioner Wrongly

Most people would either apply too much conditioner all over their hair, which weighs the hair down and makes it look greasy, or they’d only apply it at the lower half of their hair. The best way to use the hair conditioner is to start from the tips of your hair then work your way up to your roots, so that the roots of your hair won’t receive so much product, which would make the hair limp and cause greasy scalp.

#7 Rubbing Hair Dry With Towel

Rubbing hair dry with a towel is no doubt the fastest way to dry your hair, but it’s also the fastest route to breakage and frizz. Care for that precious head of hair by using your hands to squeeze out the water in your hair and then blot it with a towel.

#8 Spraying Perfume After Getting Dressed

We are all guilty as charged! Not only does it stain fabric, perfume might smell unpleasant when applied on certain fabrics. Perfume is meant to be applied to the skin, so lightly dab or spray it at pulse points – wrists (don’t rub your wrists together!), base of throat, behind the ears and knees.

#9 Neglecting The Neck

When applying skincare products on your face, don’t stop at the chin! Your neck is just as important ’cause it’s prone to ageing as well. You wouldn’t want a youthful face paired with a wrinkly neck right?

#10 Touching Face With Hands

No one can remember what their hands touch every minute of every day. If you just imagine the amount of germs and bacteria accumulated on ’em, you would keep those hands away from your precious face.

#11 Not Using Sunscreen

We cannot emphasise how important sun protection is – get into the habit of applying sunscreen each and every day. It isn’t just important for preventing those dark spots and wrinkles, but there are real health problems like skin cancer that is mostly caused by excessive sun exposure.

#12 Too Young For Anti-Ageing Products

There’s no need to buy super high-end beauty products as they might be too rich for your young skin as well. But using some anti-ageing products can never hurt ’cause we always believe in prevention rather than looking for a cure when it’s too late.

#13 Not Moisturising Properly

Too much moisturiser and it will cause clogged pores, too little and your skin will scale and itch. Having oily skin doesn’t mean that you don’t have to moisturise as it might just lead to more oil production. No matter your skin type, always replace the moisture you’ve lost after washing.

#14 Using The Wrong Cleanser

It might feel good when your face is squeaky-clean after a wash, but what you’re doing is over-drying that complexion of yours by stripping away its natural moisture. Use foam cleansers only when you have really oily skin. If not, opt for a moisturising cream cleanser or a gentler formula that won’t dry out your precious skin.

How many of these points are you guilty of? Time to make a change to that beauty routine!

10 Beauty Tips We Learned From BubzBeauty

26 Jan 2016 by Johanna Teo

Say “Beauty YouTuber”, and Lindy aka Bubzbeauty will definitely come to mind. We had a quick chat with Lindy when she was in town for her meet-and-greet, courtesy of Skin Inc, where the beauty guru shared her personal beauty and skincare tips. Here’s what we learned:

1. Keep your skin stress-free while travelling with proper hydration.

“Usually before a long-haul flight, I’ll bring a sheet mask, and if I wanted to be discrete, [I’ll bring] a sleeping pack, which will lock everything in”, shares Bubz. You might be putting your skin at risk if you travel on airplanes often, because the recycled air onboard coupled with dry conditions will totally dry your skin out.

2. Change your products to suit your needs

It’s tough finding a one-type-fits-all-needs beauty product. “If I’m going to a place with humid weather, I’ll bring a gel moisturiser, which is more light. Whereas if the weather is really dry, I’ll bring a heavier moisturiser – a creamy formula instead of gel. This works the same for foundation – I’ll alter what I bring to make it more suitable for the climate there… When I’m going somewhere humid, I like to use powder foundation because it replaces the need to use powder, so it’s kinda two-in-one. It just wears better and it doesn’t slip and slide. It really depends on where I’m flying to, but hydration is key, because oily skin is skin that’s dry on the inside. It’s basically just about keeping that balance.”

3. Facial oils are a game changer

Proclaiming her love for facial oils, Bubz shares, “I don’t necessarily wear it during the day because it can sometimes look a little [too] dewy, so I like to use it at night. I specifically love rose hip oil, and it moisturises the face in the most amazing way. You wake up with very supple, glow-y skin.”

4. Oatmeal and yoghurt is a great mask combo

According to Bubz, a spoonful of yoghurt and oatmeal respectively is all you’ll need for a great mask that’ll combat any skin problem (oily, dry, acne, inflamed). “Your skin will benefit from this because it basically balances out the pH of your skin, and it exfoliates as well. If your skin is a little oily, you can just use a drip of lemon juice. If you have acne, crush some strawberries in. But to be honest, oatmeal and natural yoghurt is all you’ll need to get the best mask ever.” She continues, “Yoghurt actually brightens your skin as well, and I know that a lot of girls in Asia are interested in complexion brightening, and many people even apply it under their armpits to lighten the area.”

5. As does green tea and honey for an exfoliator

Another natural ingredient Bubz recommends (and loves), is green tea. “Take the tea bag, rip it, and take out it’s contents and put some honey in it, and you’ll get your own green tea facial scrub!” Super easy and very nearly cost-free!

6. Put colour on your lips

Going makeup-free but hate looking washed out? Grab some tinted lip balm! “It doesn’t matter if [you] don’t have the foundation or eyeliner. As long as your lips have pigment, even the dark eye circles won’t be as noticeable. It just brings instant radiance in to your complexion.”

7. Skincare isn’t confined to only products – gadgets help too

Skin Inc Optimzer Voyage Tri-Light

With her busy schedule and personal life, it’s little wonder that Bubz is able to keep looking as fresh as she does. She shares, “I have always loved the Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light. As a new mum, it’s difficult to keep up with my beauty regimen, i really experienced results using the device and it was very easy to travel around with.”

8. It’s the little details that matter

A photo posted by Bubz (@itsbubz) on

We asked Bubz for beauty tips (duh) on managing in our humid weather, and she advised, “Priming your face with a good primer will really help. Also, waterproof eyeliner. I don’t feel like eyeshadow is always necessary – it makes all the difference if sometimes you just have eyeliner, lashes and a pop of colour on your lips. It’ll look fresh, and to be honest, if your eyebrows are groomed and filled in… your brows go a long way, so I would definitely recommend going somewhere and asking someone to groom your brows for you, just plucking the stray hairs. For me, the basics or the most important aspects of makeup, is concealer, eyeliner, mascara, and lip tint. These are the essentials. The rest are nice, but they’re not as crucial as the products I just mentioned.”

9. Keep your face clean, and your brushes cleaner

Stressing the importance of hygiene, especially with cleansing makeup off the face, Bubz recommends using a facial oil to break up the makeup. “When you’re cleansing your face, make sure it foams in your hands first before putting it on your face, or else it wouldn’t cleanse [your face] as clean.” She also advises to wash your face with water for at least 20 seconds in order to make sure it’s squeaky clean. Bubz continues, “Everybody’s really into makeup, and they keep using the same brush that they’re using everyday. You need to wash your brushes… you cannot expect to have good skin when hygiene-wise, it’s not getting anywhere.”

10. Make sure the products you use aren’t too harsh for your skin

“It really depends on your skin type. I think sometimes a lot of teenagers who want to treat their acne, they use a lot of harsh products. But really, you just want to neutralise the balance, so use very gentle products. I like to use products that contain hyaluronic acid. I find that it’s very good for hydrating and it actually helps with acne as well.”

How To Apply Makeup Without Makeup Brushes

15 Jan 2016 by Arissa Ha

Multi-use and ultra portable, NUDESTIX is a makeup brand that only takes 10 minutes to put on, and easy for creating a fuss-free natural look – all without using any makeup brushes!

The best ideas are the simplest, and for NUDESTIX, it’s almost too simple – beauty products come in a pencil form, and is super portable and easy to use. The idea behind this brand came from co-creator of Cover FX Jenny Frankel, who took time off from work to look after her two daughters, Ally and Taylor. After observing her daughters’ lifestyle (basically following them on Instagram, Snapchat and other social media platforms), she saw that teenagers embraced the natural makeup look, often opting to sleep in for another 20 minutes rather than do their makeup. There was a void to fill in terms of fuss-free makeup products that are easy to use and bring around – hence the creation of NUDESTIX.

NUDESTIX products spans lip colour, cheek colour, mascaras, brow colour, eye colour and concealers, a wide range considering its one and a half year history. As its name suggests, the colour palette leans towards nudes, browns and neutrals, and come in a pencil form. Each product comes with its own tin case, which fits up to six products – essentially, you’re able to fit your entire face into one tiny case. There are no brushes required – just draw it on, smudge it with your fingertips and you’re ready to go.

How To Achieve The No-Makeup Look In 5 Simple Steps

14 Jan 2016 by Venetia Sng

Fake great skin, long lashes and a healthy glow with makeup. We teach you how to do it in 5 simple steps!

#Step 1: BB Cream

✓ BB Cream: Or otherwise known as blemish balm, are lighter in texture and coverage as compared to foundations. It also acts as a tinted moisturiser, primer and sunblock! And if you need extra coverage, use a concealer to hide those acne.

x Foundation: One of the joys of being a youth is that you probably don’t need heavy coverage all over your face. Avoid foundation as it does make your skin look cake-y due to the humid weather.

Etude House Precous Mineral BB Cream CottonEtude House Precious Mineral BB Cream Cotton, $25.90

#Step 2: Mascara

✓ Mascara: Enhance your lashes and brighten up those peepers with a lengthening or volumising mascara!

x Falsies: No matter how natural they look in the box, false eyelashes are called falsies for a reason. Without any eye makeup to balance them out, your lashes will end up looking weird and heavy.

Benefit-Theyre-Real-MascaraBenefit They’re Real! Mascara, $44

#Step 3: Blusher

✓ Blusher: Go for a matte peach or coral blusher that will give you a healthy, radiant glow!

x Glitter: Take a pass on the shimmer, natural skin doesn’t sparkle like Edward Cullen.

ZA-Chek-GroovyZA Cheek Groovy, $18

#Step 4: Brows

✓ Brow products: It’s important to keep those arches on point at all times! A pair of well-defined brows frames and accentuates the shape of your face.

x Over filling: A pair of overdrawn brows will just make you look like you have stuck two pieces of seaweed on your face and that certainly doesn’t look natural.

Clio-Tinted-Tattoo-Kill-BrowClio Tinted Tattoo Kill Brow, $30

#Step 5: Lip Balm

✓ Lip Balm: Keep your lips moisturised and smooth with lip balm. If your pout is a little pale, dab some pink or peach gloss in the middle of your lips to add that extra pop.

x Bright colours: The idea of natural makeup is to use colours that are closest to your natural skin or hair. Leave the blue/green eyeshadows and red lipsticks for another day.
