Want enviable, bouncy locks? Expert stylist Yui from Japanese hair salon COVO Singapore shares her essential tips.

#1 Water temperature is important

Ditch cold water rinses or washing your tresses with steaming hot water. As Yui shares, “Cold water cannot remove oil entirely, but hot water can encourage greasiness in hair. To effectively remove oil and dirt buildup while maintaining a healthy scalp, use warm water – 37 degrees to be exact.” She continues, “At COVO Singapore, we use carbonated spring water for shampooing, to remove dirt hidden in the pores perfectly.”

#2 Don’t neglect blowdrying your hair

Leaving your hair to air dry may seem like the best alternative to the hair-damaging heat that comes with blowdrying, but as Yui shares, “Scalp temperature is lowered with wet hair, which isn’t good for the scalp.” She recommends applying leave-in hair treatment before using a blowdryer set on ‘cool’ to help close hair cuticles and give hair a healthy, glossy texture.

#3 Opt for a natural look when colouring hair for the first time

A post shared by Covo Singapore (@covosingapore) on

For those who are colouring their hair for the first time, Yui advises to opt for a natural shade as opposed to diving straight into bleaching or other crazy colours. To help her customers find the right hair colour, Yui takes into consideration their skin tone, colour of the brows, and even their makeup style. “For customers who do not wear much makeup, they should consider using a natural hair colour which complements their skin tone to avoid having too much of a contrast with their everyday look. Vividly coloured hair would be easier to pull off for those who are already used to wearing bold makeup.”

#4 Use leave-in treatment

Apart from improving the texture of your hair, leave-in treatment can help to tame or add volume to your tresses. Yui recommends using either a cream-based leave-in treatment for neater hair, or an oil-type treatment on the hair ends for a bouncy texture. For a low-maintenance hairstyle, avoid adding too many layers as the flyaway strands may increase the frizziness of your hair.

#5 Invest time in your haircare routine

“You have to learn how to take care of your hair,” Yui shares. “Even if you pay for an expensive haircut or treatment, learning to upkeep it at home is important.” Salon-grade products go a long way too – she recommends haircare ranges from Mucota and Hoyu.

#6 Visit the hair salon (at least) every six months

A post shared by Covo Singapore (@covosingapore) on

Don’t reserve your trips to the salon for major works like bleaching, dying or perming your hair. According to Yui, it is important to visit the salon every six months – or every month if possible. “Apart from giving your hair and scalp a thorough cleansing, getting your hair trimmed is also important to help your hair look good.” She continues, “The speed of hair growth is different on each part of your scalp, so your hairstyle may be [drastically] different even just a few months later.”

8 Celebrity Beauty Brands That Are Actually Worth The Hype (And Where To Get Them)

With more and more people championing the green movement, beauty brands are also starting to take a sustainable approach for their products. Not only is the use of natural ingredients better for your skin, you’ll be doing Mother Earth a huge favour as well. Here are some eco-conscious cosmetics brands you need to check out.

Known for its wildly affordable array of cult favourites such as the Total Control Drop Foundation ($26) and Soft Matte Lip Cream ($15), NYX’s commitment towards sustainable beauty is no secret either. Although it has fallen under the L’Oréal umbrella since 2014, rest assured this PETA-approved brand still remains 100 per cent cruelty-free and no animal testing is involved in any of their formulations. And while L’Oréal is a company that conducts animal testing, it’s worth noting that they’ve since signed an agreement to start developing eco-friendly solutions.

Kat Von D

A post shared by Kat Von D Beauty (@katvondbeauty) on

We love Kat Von D for her forward-thinking makeup brand, but what really impressed us was her dedication in sticking to her animal-friendly guns. A champion for animal rights herself, Kat has since begun reformulating her entire line to be completely vegan, including the Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($31), Tattoo Liner ($32) and Lock-It Foundation ($56) – just watch out for the #VeganAlert label. Back in August, she has also announced on Instagram that she’ll be rolling out a brand new set of vegan makeup brushes and we can’t wait to get our hands on ‘em!

Fenty Beauty

When you’ve got a universal makeup line designed for “woman of all shades, attitude and cultures” that’s run by Rihanna, there’s no reason not to support Fenty Beauty when it delivers every bit of the hype. But wait – it gets better: just when people were questioning whether the socially-conscious brand is cruelty-free, the pop star coolly responded to a Twitter DM about animal testing with “You callin’ me an animal?” and proceeded to plug the #CrueltyFree hashtag on Instagram. RiRi did that!

A post shared by Tarte Cosmetics (@tartecosmetics) on

Certified vegan and cruelty-free, Tarte offers an eco-friendly range of beauty products made with all-natural ingredients such as the bestselling Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Foundation ($60) and Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Pencil ($33). In a move to give back to the environment, Tarte also has partnered up with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to raise awareness for these marine creatures through their Rainforest of the Sea Collection. Beyond Mother Nature, they contribute to organisations like Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes and & Step Up amongst other initiatives too.

Handmade Heroes

A post shared by #handmadeheroes (@handmadeheroes) on

From whipping up DIY face masks at home, to eventually creating her very own organic skincare brand, Lynsey Lim is the proud #GirlBoss behind Homemade Heroes. No stranger to our beauty aisles, the homegrown brand emphasises on quality over quantity by producing only a small selection of must-haves like the Cocolicious Luscious Lip Scrub ($9.90), Drop Dead Gorgeous Dry Shampoo ($14.90) and French Green Clay Face Mask ($14.90). Oh, and did we mention it’s also paraben-, preservative- and synthetic-free? No better way to #SupportLocal!

A post shared by Katfood (@ilovekatfood) on

Another local skincare line we’re obsessed over, Katfood specialises in just about everything coconut – coconut oil body scrubs, coconut flour dry shampoos… you name it – handmade with organic ingredients to ensure the best quality. However, do take note that these products are “designed not to last” and don’t contain any chemical preservatives, thus they typically come with a shorter shelf life. Not that it should matter, we’re pretty sure they’ll be emptied soon enough and that means more reason to stock up on more Kat treats!
