5 Reasons Why You Should Catch Halsey in Singapore

24 Jul 2018 by Teenage

Halsey is no stranger to music’s top charts, and this time, the

American pop songstress will be coming for her first ever solo show in Singapore. As part of her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom World Tour, the 23-year-old will be taking the stage at The Star Theatre for her very own full-fledged concert on 8 August. From new earworms to jam out to, to her electrifying stage presence, here are our top five reasons why you should catch the queen of the badlands in action.

#1 She’s been gone for far too long

The last time Halsey came to Singapore was for the Singapore F1 Grand Prix back in 2016. Undoubtedly, the highly-anticipated performance was one that left many wanting more. Case in point? Here are just some of the fan tweets that perfectly summed up her epic set.

With her surefire string of groovy hits, Halsey clearly left an itch since she was last here. Now, after two long years, fans of the ‘Colours’ singer can finally get their Halsey fix – and we have no doubt that she’ll deliver the same energy and ageless appeal to everyone come 8 August.

#2 She’s got some fresh tunes

A lot has happened since Halsey last visited. In that period, she has released Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, and with it came ‘Now or Never’ and ‘Alone’. And most recently, she teamed up with producer Benny Blanco and Khalid for ‘Eastside’ – a breezy, catchy radio banger that became a chart-topper faster than you can say “she used to meet me on the Eastside” (last we checked, the song stands at #1 on Spotify’s Singapore Viral 50 playlist). We can’t wait to hear Halsey’s live rendition of it!

#3 She won’t be alone

As much as Halsey has her own stellar discography, she’s equally famous for her killer collaborations too. Just look at ‘Closer’, ‘Him & I’, and ‘The Feeling’. More than that, Halsey will be accompanied by some special guests during her tour. Kehlani will join her for the Australia and New Zealand stops, while Lauren Jauregui from Fifth Harmony will swing by on the Latin America dates. For the Asia leg, we’ll be getting Indonesian R&B artiste Nicole Zefanya aka NIKI. Powerful women supporting each other!

#4 She’s fashionably unpredictable

Halsey’s not just making waves in the entertainment scene – her unabashed hairstyles over the years have commanded an equal amount of attention too. From lusciously blonde locks to rocking a bold buzzcut, you’ll never know what to expect from Halsey.

Here’s a fun game to play: see if you can correctly predict what hairstyle this style maven will sport during her Asia dates! No peeking on her Instagram is allowed.

#5 She’s got sick tour visuals

Lights, camera, action – the concert visuals for the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour look almost like a work of art. From butterflies and flowers, to fire and lightning, her tour aesthetics game is through the roof. Get ready to be treated to a multi-sensory experience transcending beyond just her breathtaking vocals.

“Let’s be together for the rest of our lives,” says a teary-eyed Bae Jinyoung halfway through Wanna One’s One: The World concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium – a 10,000 capacity show that might just be their fans’ last time seeing the 11-member group performing in front of them before their impending disbandment at the end of the year, for their own concert tour at least.

The band will return to headline the upcoming HallyuPopFest in September, but till then, they left us with plenty of memories to remember. The rigid security checks did put a damper on everyone’s spirits, but the boys more than made up for it with their powerful charisma and blistering performances. Fan service aside, it was also a chance for them to display their individual talents while still maintaining their impeccable teamwork and stage presence as a whole. Here are 11 of our favourite moments during #OneTheWorldinSG.

#1 When they got us shook with their explosive energy

Kicking off the set with a string of high-energy hits such as ‘Burn It Up’, ‘Never’ and ‘Energetic’, it wasn’t even three songs in that the members started sweating bullets from the intense choreography. It’s heartening to see them giving their all for each performance without showing any signs of exhaustion, and if anything, it only makes us love them even more. Amirite, fellow Wannables?

#2 When Minhyun and Jinyoung stole the show from the start

Apart from their group stages, Wanna One also managed to squeeze in solo segments in between their packed three-hour set, allowing each member to have their turn in the spotlight. First up was Minhyun and Jinyoung – and boy, they certainly knew how to please their fans. As if Jinyoung’s dance solo wasn’t enough to make us weak in the knees, Minhyun spiced things up further with a steamy blindfold performance. No abs baring like what he did in other countries, but hey, we’re not complaining.

#3 When the Pink Sausages teamed up

99-liners Jihoon and Woojin – affectionately known as 2Park or Pink Sausages in the fandom – do pretty much everything together, so it’s no surprise they would choose to share the stage with each other instead. Looking dashing in all-black suits, the pair showed off their perfect chemistry with one another with a sizzling dance routine. Name a more iconic duo than ’em – we’ll wait.

#4 When they tried their hand at Singlish

The concert went on for a good 45 minutes before the boys finally took a breather and greeted the fans. Although it was pretty obvious they were following the script throughout, which came across a tad overly rehearsed at times, we like that they tried to add in elements of our local lingo – think “chio” and “so shiok” – into their concert banter. Oh, and they ate chilli crab the night before.

#5 When God Daniel commanded the stage

When we talk about abs, Daniel is arguably the first person who comes to mind. The man’s never been shy when it comes to showing off his rock-hard packs, but he proved that he’s more than just his hot bod by showcasing his modern dance skills during his solo – a refreshing change from the B-boy stunts we used to witness from our resident human fidget spinner.

#6 When Jaehwan hit dem notes

Every member in Wanna One are no doubt incredible singers in their own right, but Jaehwan’s vocal chops are seriously hard to beat. The powerhouse vocalist impressed with an acoustic rendition of ‘I’ll Remember’ during his solo, effortlessly hitting the notes and giving us goosebumps every single time. To say that we were mindblown would be an understatement.

#7 When DJ Hankki took over the decks

The party was just getting started! Leave it to Jisung — or rather, DJ Hankki – to rev up the crowd, accompanied with his best hype men Daniel, Woojin and Jaehwan to bring the energy to an all-time high. While Jisung was helming the decks, Sungwoon surprised us with an epic dance break to a remix of Charlie Puth’s ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ by none other than Jisung’s DJ alter-ego. What else can Wanna One not do?

#8 When Guanlin made our noona hearts swoon

Among the individual stages, the member we were looking forward to the most was Guanlin. And the talented maknae definitely didn’t disappoint, flaunting his smooth moves with a jaw-dropping dance solo to Lil Dicky’s ‘Freaky Friday’. It seems like just yesterday that the 16-year-old was the Cube chick we always cooed over on Produce 101 – but now, he’s more than capable of holding his own on stage. We couldn’t be more proud!

#9 When they gave us ‘healing time’

Unlike their previous albums, their latest studio effort 1÷x=1 (Undivided) is made up of unit collaborations with big-name producers Zico, Dynamic Duo, Nell and Heize. And fans were particularly excited to see the 11-member group performing in their respective units. Heize’s team, The Heal, stood out to us the most – with Daehwi launching into a melodic piano intro, before letting Seongwoo take centre stage with an emotional dance sequence.

#10 When they dished out secret fan service

No K-pop concert is complete without some mandatory fan service. Much of their setlist were heavily dominated by choreography, but that didn’t stop Wanna One from sneaking in some finger hearts here and cheeky winks there – all to reciprocate the love and support they’ve received from their beloved Wannables.

#11 When Wanna One and Wannables become one

Things got a little emotional when they winded it down for slow numbers like ‘I’ll Remember’ and ‘Always’, with fans raising up banners that read “Wanna One and Wannable forever” as they earnestly sang along to each and every word. “I think you guys can sing better than us,” quipped Daniel. “Wannables are the best!”

Like all good things, the concert came to a bittersweet end and each of them took turns to express their heartfelt gratitude to the fans in attendance. “I feel that Singapore has one of the loudest cheers. I’ll definitely come back again!” exclaimed Woojin. Minhyun couldn’t have wrapped it up more aptly, “Thanks to all of you, I’ve made great memories to take home.”

Same here, Minhyun.

Everyone’s crazy over #RelationshipGoals, but we think #FamGoals should be a thing too. Just check out the camaraderie between the cast of Thai rom-com flick Brother Of The Year, Nichkhun, Sunny and Yaya, when they were in town for a whirlwind promo.

In the film, Nichkhun plays the role of the #PerfectBoyfriend to Yaya’s character, while Sunny’s the #DemonBrother who will go all out to put a stop to anything that makes his little sister happy. But it seems like the 2PM heartthrob is just as oppa-worthy (a term of endearment for an older male) to his sister — and future girlfriend — off the script! Here are some interesting findings we gathered during our short interview.

#1 You can always count on him.

“When you’re siblings, you tend to take everything for granted because they are always there for you, but I think you should always be respectful to one another no matter what. Although I don’t see [my sister] as often as I want to because I’m always overseas, but I try to be that supportive older brother. When they have something they want to talk about, they can always come to me.”

#2 And he doesn’t hesitate to stand up for you.

“I wouldn’t be like ‘No, you can’t date him’ but more of ‘I don’t think he’s the right one for you’. That’s what being a sibling is all about because we know them best; you don’t want them to stray to someone who’s not worth it. If he does something [to my sister], then he’s dead meat (laughs).”

#3 He’s not always the ‘nice guy’.

“If I really like the story but it’s the same type of character, I would do it again. I think it all depends on the script. But I would love to try out other characters as well. Sunny and Yaya are always taking on different roles and I want to do it too, someday. Something like Liam Neeson from Taken would be fun!”

#4 He’s not about the grand gestures.

“I’d like to surprise her at work without telling her anything. Buy some flowers and leave it on her desk just to brighten up her day. Just these small things that show I’m thinking about her. I think that’s kind of romantic, right? (Laughs)”

#5 Above all, he puts your feelings first.

“Of course I would like to propose in front of thousands of people, but what if she isn’t comfortable with that? Some people don’t like having a crowd watching them get proposed to, so I have to find out what are my girlfriend’s preferences.”

Fancy more Nichkhun goodness? Don’t forget to catch him in Brother Of The Year, screening now at all cinemas!

You’d be hard-pressed to find a fellow Singaporean who hasn’t heard of The Sam Willows, arguably one of the hottest acts that is fast revolutionising our music landscape.

The homegrown quartet, made up of Benjamin Kheng, Narelle Kheng, Sandra Riley Tang and Jon Chua, has been chalking up an impressive record of honourable accolades throughout their six-year career, and they show no signs of losing steam anytime soon. Just take a look at the results of their latest studio record I Know, But Where, which topped the Singapore iTunes charts within an hour of its release. But apart from their musical achievements, they are really just a band of friends who love making music together and fooling around with one another. During our recent interview with the local pop darlings, we found out quite a bit of amusing tidbits about ’em – fanboying shenanigans, memes and all.

#1 They are massive fans of CL.

Teenage: You’ll be playing at We The Fest and Hyperplay soon! How do you feel about performing alongside big names like CL?

Jon: Oh, I’m so excited for CL. We are very big fans. I think it’s perfect because CL is known as the baddest female, and I’m known as the baddest male, so… (laughs)

Narelle: Self-proclaimed. We’ve actually played once with CL before when she was still in 2NE1. We went on right after her and you know when you’re onstage you have in-ear monitors where you sing into a mic and it goes straight into your ears? So right before we went out we had to put them on, which meant that we heard everything that was coming out of her mic, directly into our ears. She’s such a good vocalist, it’s insane. I got goosebumps just hearing her voice.

Teenage: Have you guys met her before?

Jon: No, but I’m planning to find her in her dressing room.

Sandra: Oh my god, don’t say that Jon. That sounds so creepy!

Jon: I’m not gonna lie about it! Like, I’m so excited for CL… so excited.

#2 A TSW x Alessia Cara collaboration, anybody?

Teenage: What other artistes performing in the upcoming festivals you guys would like to collaborate with?

Ben: Alessia Cara!

Narelle: We just love really love Alessia Cara so much. I mean she started off on YouTube as well, writing songs about things that are real to her. And I think she’s so down-to-earth! Ben has a massive crush on her just ’cause of her voice.

#3 They are super into cartoons.

Teenage: Tell us more about the inspiration behind your album’s dystopian concept.

Narelle: We were thinking about how we could put our faces on the cover, but somehow we just couldn’t think of how the four of us would be photographed to represent these songs. It kinda started with ‘Robot’, like we knew from the start we wanted it to have something to do with animation. We were sitting in the studio and Sandra had this idea of a human and robot sitting on a cliff looking out into the distance… then we had our friend do the visual and we all fell in love with it. It just felt right. I think even with all the other cover arts, we also had a bit of a cartoon feel to it. I don’t know, I’m just in a cartoon phase in my life. You’re a cartoon right now, in my mind! (Laughs)

#4 And a pretty competitive band too!

Teenage: What are your thoughts on other bands such as One Direction and Fifth Harmony breaking up recently?

Narelle: I don’t know, we haven’t really given it that much thought. We also know that there is a lifespan of how long we get to be together, but we’re just working through it.

Sandra: We’re also very competitive by nature, so when we hear a different band has broken up we’re like: “Yes!”

Narelle: Hah, we’re still here! We’ll be like fifty and singing Canto songs.

Jon: I think the day that The Sam Willows break up is gonna be a very sad day. Like all this work and what we’ve been through together as a band… definitely that day will come – we know that for sure but well, not anytime soon because we’ve got a new album to promote, so…

Narelle: And we have a contract! (Laughs)

Bonus: Did we mention they make iconic memes?

We asked each of them to come up with a face that best suits their rather unconventionally-titled album I Know, But Where – and well, they certainly did not disappoint.

Can’t get enough of The Sam Willows? Be sure to grab a copy of our latest issue coming out this August, featuring the band’s track-by-track breakdown of I Know, But Where. Plus, a mega poster for you to pin up!

Meanwhile, check out their full album on Spotify.
