5 Things You Need To Know About Charlie Puth

10 May 2016 by Venetia Sng

You may know him as the singer behind the vocals ‘See You Again’ featured in Furious 7 and ‘Marvin Gaye’ featuring Megan Trainor, but there is more than meets the eye for this Berklee graduate! Here are 5 things you need to know about Charlie Puth.

#1 He was a YouTuber discovered by Ellen DeGeneres

His cover of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ with Emily Luther gained a lot of attention, so much that Ellen DeGeneres wanted both of them on her show! When the Ellen team called him up, he thought that it was a prank and hung up on them, thrice! But everything went well in the end, he appeared on the show and even signed to her label, eleveneleven.

#2 A dog attack almost killed him

He got his permanent scar on his eyebrow from a dog attack which almost died from. So no, he didn’t shave his brows to seem cool. He is cool without trying.

#3 He’s a producer too

He wrote, co-produced, and was featured on a song with Wiz Khalifa, ‘See You Again’, a tribute to the late Paul Walker, included in the Furious 7 soundtrack. He also worked on several albums of other artists. He co-wrote and produced the ‘Broke’ and ‘Pull Up’ for Jason Derulo’s album Everything Is 4, and produced “Working Class Heroes (Work)” on CeeLo Green’s album Heart Blanche. Is he talented or what?

#4 He’s not dating Selena Gomez or Megan Trainor

He has worked with Megan for his debut single ‘Marvin Gaye’ and Selena for a track in his debut album ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’. Despite all rumours, he’s just really good friends with both Selena and Megan.

#5 He will be performing in Singapore

Singapore will be one of his stops for his ‘Nine Track Mind Tour’! Catch Charlie Puth live in Singapore at The Coliseum on 10 August! Tickets are now available for sale via sistic.

Movie of the Week: Bad Neighbours 2

4 May 2016 by Venetia Sng

The unexpected hit Bad Neighbours (2014) is back with a sequel and this time round they will be dealing with a sorority instead.

Life is good for Mac Radner (Seth Rogen) and pregnant wife Kelly (Rose Byrne), until the unruly  sorority sisters of Kappa Nu move in next door. As loud parties continuously disrupt the peace, the couple turn to former neighbour and one-time enemy Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron) for help. Joining forces with the fraternity stud, the trio devise schemes to get the wild sorority off the block. Unfortunately, the rebellious young women refuse to go down without a fight.

Here are 3 reasons why you need to catch Bad Neighbours 2 in the theatres!

#1 Selena Gomez & Chloe Grace Moretz

We would love to see what went down (cat fight?) between Madison (Selena Gomez) and Shelby (Chloe Grace Moretz) before the latter branched out to form Kappa Kappa Nu.

#2 The Gags

Be sure to expect better gags (yes the airbag is back) and funnier jokes.

#3 Zac Efron Shirtless

Here’s a little teaser for you.

Best And Worst Dressed At The Met Gala 2016

3 May 2016 by Venetia Sng

The annual Met Gala aka Hollywood Prom happened over the weekend. Themed ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’, the exhibition explores how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade (manus) and the machine-made (machina) in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear. Let’s take a look at the best and worst dressed celebrities this year!

Best Dressed

Though her hair and make up is a tad bit boring, Kate Hudson’s dress is so gorgeous and doing the theme so well that even Lady Gaga is giving her the side eye.

Nicole Kidman looking every bit like an ethereal being.

Jourdan Dunn going for the glamorous robot look.

Though Jessica Chastain looks marvellous in this dress, we think she missed the memo and dressed for last year’s theme “China: Through The Looking Glass” instead.

#ZayGi going for Best Dressed Couple at the gala. We’re pretty sure Zayn got his inspiration from the Winter Soldier and did you know that Gigi’s manicure costs US$2000?!

Cinderella of the night, Claire Danes’ dress lights up! It actually lights up! It’s so pretty we can’t even.

No sequin shiny sexy robot for Emma Watson please. Miss Granger oozes class in this gown which is made of recycled plastic.

Anyone would’ve looked like a total mess in this piece but not Queen Beyonce

Worst Dressed

Looks like Solange didn’t seek her sister’s opinion on whatever she was wearing.

Did Kristen Stewart do her own hair and makeup herself at home? We get the metallic eyeshadow (technology = silver, we get it) but what’s up with the metal sponge of a dress?

Where do we even start with Katy Perry. Her hair is no, her makeup is no, her dress is no, she needs to let it go, need to let it go. Nah to the ah to the no no no!

Demi Lovato is a toned down version of Katy Perry but still no.

We’re glad that Lady Gaga brought Lady Gaga back for this Met Gala but we all know she can do better than this 1980s (tech?) biker chick look.

Who’s the best and worst dressed in your opinion? Let us know in the comment box below!

Movie of the Week: Captain America: Civil War

27 Apr 2016 by Venetia Sng

Our movie of the week needs no introduction. If you’re not planning to catch it in the theatres, why?!

One year after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, another international incident involving the Avengers resulting in collateral damage occurs, prompting politicians to form a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to call in the team. When Steve Rogers attempts to protect his friend Bucky Barnes from this act, he is brought into conflict with Tony Stark. This results in the fracturing of the Avengers into two opposing factions—one led by Rogers, who wishes to operate without regulation, and the other by Stark, who supports government oversight—while the world is threatened by a new enemy.

Not sure who’s who and who’s on which side? Here is a rundown of our heroes and a comparison with their comic book self!

Megan Lee Talks Korean Culture, Negativity And Social Media Woes

27 Apr 2016 by Chew Hui Ling

From YouTube to K-pop to Make It Pop, it’s been quite a wild ride for 20-year-old Megan Lee, who has been in the industry since the tender age of 10 and boasts a triple-threat resume that includes national commercials, TV cameos and singing credentials. Currently the star of popular Nickelodeon K-pop inspired series Make It Pop, Megan plays Sun Hi, a social media-obsessed wannabe who aspires to become a worldwide pop star. We popped by for a chat with the talented actress during her short stay in Singapore, where she opened up about her life back in Korea, her on-screen persona, and her empowering new album.

Read part one of our interview with Megan Lee on the May 2016 issue!

In an interview with Billboard, you mentioned that you “came back as a new person”. How have you matured as a person/musician since returning to America?
Living in Korea has helped me to humble myself even more and appreciate all the little things, be it good or bad. Like any Asian household, I was a very disciplined child growing up – but of course, as an American going to Korea, there was a lot more discipline than I’m used to. Customs like bowing at a 90-degree angle, respecting your elders, and formal speeches were some of the things I had to adapt to. I was also able to improve my vocal abilities as a singer – I picked up guitar, was taught how to write songs, and was given opportunities to collaborate with other artistes. I learned a lot from my former CEO Kim Tae Woo, and I’d love to go back to Korea to make music again.

If given the chance to choose, would you rather be solo or be part of a girl group like Sun Hi?
I’ve done both, so I can definitely list the pros and cons for that. I love the girls and we’re like a family, but artistically speaking, I have more creative freedom to do the kind of music I want as a solo singer. Whereas in a group, we do more pop and EDM – which I do enjoy, but aren’t really me. So I guess I’d be more of a solo (laughs).

Megan Lee Sun Hi Make It Pop XO-IQ

What are some of the similarities between Sun Hi and the real-life Megan Lee?
Sun Hi’s like a heightened version of me; if you take 10,000 Megan Lees and put her into one body, that’d make us Sun Hi. She might come across as self-absorbed and selfish sometimes, but what people don’t know is that she’s very dear to her friends. She’s also very passionate about music and I feel that I can relate to her in that way.

Sun Hi is known to be extremely active on social media, but how is it like for yourself?
Social media is a big part of my life, same goes for Sun Hi. I’d always feel a little heartbroken whenever I see fans – or just people in general – commenting stuff like ‘you never like my posts’, ‘you didn’t’ retweet me’, or ‘please follow me’. Which is why I try to acknowledge as many of my followers as possible and I want all of them to know that I appreciate their love. I wouldn’t be here without them.

What’s the most memorable message you’ve received?
The most touching letter I’ve gotten was from this kid who was going through depression and feeling suicidal, but after hearing one of my songs on YouTube, he said that he felt motivated to stand up and be cheerful again. I was literally bawling when I read that message. It inspired me to work harder as a musician and become a positive role model in the industry.

We heard you’ve got a new album in the works, tell us more about it!
My new record I AM will be coming out sometime in the spring. It’s an album that represents who I am as a person, and I hope to show the different sides of me that nobody has ever seen before. The title track is an uplifting anthem that was inspired by past events – hence the name ‘Stronger’. It carries the motivational message of getting up your feet and not letting any negativity bring you down. Just believe that you can do it, because anything is possible.

Fill in the blank after I AM with three words/phrases that best describe you.
I Am Stronger. I Am Who I Am. I Am Happy.

While waiting for the full album to drop, don’t forget to catch Megan Lee on Make It Pop every weekday at 6pm on Nickelodeon (StarHub TV Ch 314 and Singtel TV Ch 240)!
