7 K-Drama Pairings Who Have Coupled-Up On Screen More Than Once

4 Mar 2019 by Megan Cheah

Among the plethora of tales that make up the current K-drama scene, there are a number that stay etched in our minds long after the last episode. While we lament that we no longer have the ability to follow the lead characters past their happily-ever-after, there are times when actors and actresses reunite for an all-new production, spun from the chemistry that we oh-so-adore. Here are some of our favourite onscreen couples that have come (or will be coming) together yet again to bring us another round of feels.

Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na

Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na - Goblin and Touch Your Heart

Goblin (2016) → Touch Your Heart (2019)

When blockbuster drama Goblin took K-fans by storm all around the world, it wasn’t just the centuries-long story of Kim Shin and his human bride Ji Eun Tak that had us at the edge of our seats. Thankfully, Grim Reaper and Sunny will be getting their second chance at finding love (sort of?) with current TVN drama Touch Your Heart, which reunites Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In ans in starring roles. With the star-crossed romance that wrenched hearts still fresh in our minds, it’s no surprise that many have been diligently tuning into the new series to root for the lovebirds.

Fun fact: Lee Dong Wook shared that he decided to take on this drama because of his “comfort and trust in working with Yoo In Na”. It seems like working together has formed a fast friendship (or perhaps something more?) between the two, and we’re so glad to see them together again!

Kim Soo Hyun and IU

Dream High (2011) → The Producers (2015)

When talking about Kim Soo Hyun’s big break, we simply cannot forget Dream High, where the young actor first gained attention for his role as Sam Dong. It was also the drama where he crossed paths with nation’s little sister IU, who played the love interest of 2PM’s Wooyoung. Although the two weren’t paired up back then, sparks were definitely flying between them in The Producers – and viewers clearly agreed, as they were nominated for the Best Couple Award in the KBS Drama Awards.

Fun fact: Kim Soo Hyun also appeared in IU’s ‘Ending Scene’ music video, two years after The Producers.

Jang Hyuk and Jang Na Ra

Jang Hyuk and Jang Na Ra - Successful Story of a Bright Girl and Fated to Love You

Successful Story of a Bright Girl (2002) → You Are My Destiny/Fated To Love You (2014)

They first worked together in 2002 for Successful Story of a Bright Girl, where Jang Na Ra played a simple country girl opposite Jang Hyuk’s arrogant company president. 12 yeas later, the former co-stars finally reunited for You Are My Destiny (also known as Fated To Love You) as a large company’s heir and a harried law firm secretary. Despite the years apart, they shared that they were still comfortable around each other while working on their second drama together.

Fun fact: Third time’s the charm? They teamed up once again in drama short Old Goodbye which was part of the single-episode anthology Drama Festival, and its director was one of the few who worked with them for You Are My Destiny

Park Seo Joon and Hwang Jung Eum

Hwang Jung Eum and Park Seo Joon - Kill Me, Heal Me and She Was Pretty

Kill Me, Heal Me (2015) → She Was Pretty (2015)

Fans of twins Oh Ri-jin and Oh Ri-on would be pleased to know that Park Seo Joon and Hwang Jung Eum’s amazing chemistry together was capitalised on just a few months after Kill Me, Heal Me. She Was Pretty had strong ratings and continued to climb as viewers latched onto the couple’s charm – we’re just glad we can now “ship” the pair comfortably without them being awkwardly related in the show!

Fun fact: There’s no questioning the fact that Hwang Jung Eum and Park Seo Joon work really well together, as said by the actress herself. “If I do something, he gets it right away,” she shared. Can we get another drama of them already?

Lee Sang Yoon and Lee Bo Young

Lee Bo Young and Lee Sang Yoon - Seoyoung My Daughter and Whisper

Seoyoung, My Daughter (2012) → Whisper (2017)

After the whirlwind tale of Lee Seo Young and Kang Woo Jae in Seoyoung, My Daughter (also the highest-rated drama of 2013), viewers were in for another treat when Lee Sang Yoon and Lee Bo Young reunited for 2017 SBS drama Whisper. While the former show focused on family drama and relationships, the latter showed a new side to the couple as they teamed up to uncover the largest legal scandal in South Korea – definitely a plot that fans of the two would enjoy sinking their teeth into.

Fun fact: In Whisper, Lee Bo Young’s powerful lines “‘Wait, stay still’, the children who listened to those words are still in heaven waiting for the truth to be revealed” were in remembrance of the Sewol Ferry tragedy in 2017. It seemed that her co-star shared her feelings too, as he admitted that those words rendered him speechless. He added, “My character in the drama had a lot of excuses to give, but once those lines were spoken, I had nothing to say.”

Jung Yong Hwa and Park Shin Hye

Jung Yong Hwa and Park Shin Hye - Heartstrings and You're Beautiful

You’re Beautiful (2009) → Heartstrings (2011)

The relationship between Jung Yong Hwa and Park Shin Hye’s onscreen characters for both dramas translated into a lasting friendship off-set, but it also sparked a series of rumours about the couple. The CNBLUE lead vocalist has since refuted them, stating that she’s just a friend – even declining a role in The Heirs to “avoid” Park Shin Hye as he believed “fans would be bored” of them appearing together once again. We beg to differ, though!

Fun fact: Park Shin Hye is a frequent attendee of CNBLUE concerts as she is close friends with Jung Yong Hwa and drummer Kang Min Hyuk, who had also acted with her in Heartstrings and The Heirs.

Lee Seung Gi and Bae Suzy

Lee Seung Gi and Suzy Bae - Gu Family Book

Gu Family Book (2013) → Vagabond (2019)

It’s been six years in the making, but Lee Seung Gi and Suzy are at last working together for a second time in Vagabond, an upcoming series delving into South Korea’s corruption after a mysterious plane crash. The actor plays a stuntman who gets unwittingly pulled into the plot after his nephew’s death, while the former Miss A member takes on the role of a covert operative doing so to support her family – a completely different tone from the fantasy-historical drama Gu Family Book, which the pair last starred in. Vagabond airs later in May, so be sure to catch it then!

Fun fact: Lee Seung Gi recently celebrated his 32nd birthday this year with Suzy and his other celebrity friends, including the cast of SBS variety show Master of the House and Vagabond director Yoo In Sik.

Let’s face it: we all had a Jonas Brothers’ phase, especially if you’re a 90s kid who grew up watching Disney Channel. Whether you spent your tween weekends closely following their exploits, rewatching Camp Rock at every sleepover or simply listened to their inescapable bops on repeat, there’s no hiding the fact that we were disappointed when the trio inevitably parted ways back in 2013.

Fast forward six years later, the JoBros have got news for you – Nick, Joe and Kevin are back! Following reunion rumours after their social media accounts were blacked out, the band of brothers surprised the world by dropping their new comeback single ‘Sucker’ along with their accompanying music video, featuring none than other than their significant others Priyanka Chopra, Sophie Turner and Danielle Jonas. Someone send an S.O.S., ’cause we can’t stop freaking out.

Here are some reasons why you ought to get excited about their comeback.

#1 ‘Sucker’ comes six years after they broke up due to creative differences

The JoBros had been on a chart-topping spree in 2013 when just two days before a scheduled tour and in the middle of preparations for their fifth studio album, they decided to call it quits. A spokesperson then cited a “deep rift in the band” and a “big disagreement over their music”, which signalled to disappointed fans that this could be the end of Jonas Brothers, indefinitely. Thankfully, it seems like they finally got over this disagreement (and we didn’t have to wait till the “Year 3000”).

#2 Kevin stans can finally see their man on the guitar again

During their six-year hiatus, Nick has enjoyed success as a solo musician while dabbling in acting and Joe had been churning out tunes with his new group DNCE. On the other hand, eldest brother Kevin had been focusing on non-music endeavours – flexing his entrepreneurial spirit by founding real-estate and development brand JonasWerner, communications and social media agency The Blu Market, and even his very own food app Yood.

Although his side projects are doing fairly well, the 31-year-old had been staying away from the entertainment limelight, appearing only at fashion shows and a stint on Celebrity Apprentice. With this comeback, Kevin stans will be able to see him on stage once again – with a prim new haircut to boot.

#3 They have kept this comeback a secret for more than half a year

Jonas Brothers, James Corden - Carpool Karaoke

The rumour mill went abuzz when their Instagram reactivated in January 2018, but the trio has vehemently denied all possible news of new music together, up until the end of February this year. Sharing a clip on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke spot, Nick exclaimed, “It’s nice to be able to finally tell somebody. We’ve kept this a secret now for almost seven, eight months.” The boys (now men, we suppose) will also be taking over The Late Late Show With James Corden for a week, so expect interviews, sketches, songs and the full Carpool Karaoke segment to occupy your week from 4 to 7 March.

#4 Their celeb family members are even more excited than we are

And yes they’re back…and may I say… hotter than ever. So proud of the family #Sucker #JonasBrothers #MidnightET

A post shared by Priyanka Chopra Jonas (@priyankachopra) on

Nick and Indian actress Priyanka Chopra tied the knot to huge fanfare in a three-day wedding at the end of 2018, and fans are no doubt waiting to see how the youngest JoBro’s beau is reacting to the news. Sharing the artwork of the single on her own Instagram page, she captioned it, “And yes they’re back…and may I say… hotter than ever. So proud of the family #Sucker #JonasBrothers #MidnightET.” She also commented “Yesss baby! It’s time! So proud.” under Nick’s own post. Love to see the family support!

Game of Thrones star and soon-to-be family member Sophie Turner also shared the love. Engaged to Joe since October 2017, the actress shared the same single cover on her Instagram with the caption “They’re back baby” and commented her excitement on the original JoBros’ post barely a minute after it went up.

It should probably be no surprise that both of them, as well as Kevin’s wife Danielle Jonas, were featured in the music video – we still can’t believe that these tween stars came back married and engaged!

#5 They still have the same sense of humour

Just for you guys 🎉

A post shared by Jonas Brothers (@jonasbrothers) on

If you’re afraid that the years changed the group too much, don’t be; one of their latest posts on Instagram shows that the three heartthrobs are still the fresh-faced teenage rock band that every girl of that era swooned over. In a blast from the past, the trio recreated their 2008 video that went viral amongst their fans – a literal play on the term “how the tables have turned”. Now in 2019, the clip ends with copious amounts of confetti and a “Hello Again” sign – just in time for today’s release.

#6 They have “All Grown Up” – and cropped their hair short

Jonas Brothers - Sucker

Teens in the early 2000s will remember the JoBros’ distinct style: slim ties, skinny jeans and leather jackets. As with the release of the ‘Sucker’ cover art, former teenyboppers can clearly see that the band has grown out of that fashion trend. Decked out in loud get-ups, each JoBro sports brand new looks vastly different from the other – from Joe’s high-waist, matching prints silk shirt and bottoms to Kevin’s psychedelic print top from Dries Van Noten last seen on Beyoncé, this is a new era of Jonas Brothers fashion we’re looking forward to.

The one thing you might miss is the mop of shaggy, curly hair on each brother’s head, but we don’t hate the close-cropped hairstyles one bit.

For avid followers of K-pop, it’s a well-known fact that Seungri has a stupendous sense of humour, which the chap effortlessly demonstrated when he took centre stage at his long-awaited solo concert in Singapore last Saturday (23 Feb).

The BIGBANG member, who performed in front of an intimate crowd of 1,600 at The Star Theatre as part of The Great Seungri Tour, was loud, wildly entertaining and at times self-deprecating. Not exactly the kind of person you would expect from one of the most well-loved K-pop groups in the industry, but that’s precisely what makes the 28-year-old even more likeable in our books.

Seungri SG 1

Despite promoting without his fellow hyungs, the natural-born performer was more than capable of holding his own on stage. The set-up was fairly minimal, with the presence of two male dancers and occasional smoke effects to complement his pared-down yet robust performances. But that didn’t hinder the seasoned idol from putting on a bangin’ show for his dedicated legion of local VIPs.

From showing off his Singlish chops to jokingly calling out his agency, his comedic antics never failed to draw peals of laughter from the audience. Here are Seungri’s best golden quips of the night.

“You guys can sit down, y’know? This isn’t a dance song!”

Kicking off the show with an upbeat performance of BIGBANG’s ‘Bang Bang Bang’, Seungri got the crowd up on their feet right from the get-go as he brought the atmosphere to a high. Thereafter, he winded it down with a cover of Jay Chou’s ‘The Longest Movie’, which is a slow ballad number. Despite his pleas in getting fans to sit down, he was met with a chorus of no’s which prompted him to play along, “Don’t be mad, I’m trying to be nice!”

“I have the best Singlish accent among Korean artistes. No one else can say it like this.”

No stranger to our sunny shores, the K-pop star is known for being friends with notable personalities such as local socialite Kim Lim and has made numerous visits to Singapore in the past year alone. Thus, it’s of no surprise that the chap had managed to master our colloquial language. “Are you having a good time lah?” he began, before proudly declaring that he has the best Singlish accent. “I’m the best [at Singlish], because I love Singapore so much.”

“Because my company didn’t give me the job, I have to find work myself.”

One can obviously tell that this concert tour was arranged by Seungri himself. There was nothing fancy about it – no dramatic pre-filmed VCRs, no live band like what VIPs are used to at BIGBANG concerts, just two lone backup dancers – but he pulled it off nonetheless. “I didn’t plan to do a tour, but it’s all thanks to your support,” said Seungri, who didn’t forget to take a jab at YG Entertainment for the lack of resources. Even though he meant it in a joking manner, fans started booing over the mistreatment. He quickly laughed it off, “C’mon guys, this is life.” We love an unbothered king!

“If you wanna propose, let me give you guys one tip: bring this bass.”

“This show started last summer. I wanted to bring the best production in the world to the stage,” he explained with a hint of sarcasm that didn’t go unnoticed, before going on to demonstrate how each component plays an important part – from the flashing lights (“Doesn’t it look like a Christmas tree?”) to the theatric smoke effects (“This isn’t Universal Studios BTW!”). When it came to the woofer for the bass sound, he playfully told the male audience to use the venue’s woofer bass for their proposals to amplify their love, literally. Hear that, lads?

“After seeing this picture, I can’t eat tamagoyaki anymore.”

Although the other four members are currently away for their military duties, Seungri always made sure to mention the group in any situation, be it on variety shows or during his concert ments. In a segment where he displayed funny BIGBANG images that he grabbed off Google, the cheeky maknae took the opportunity to poke fun at G-Dragon’s famous centre-parted blonde hair which looked similar to tamagoyaki (Japanese egg roll). “I really love Japanese food,” he said. “But after seeing this picture, I can’t eat tamagoyaki anymore. Sorry, I just cannot.”

“You guys can stay with me because I’m not a bad guy.”

Towards the end of the two-hour show, Seungri noticed that fans were holding up banners with the words “I’ll stay with you” written in Korean and blurted, “You guys can stay with me because I’m not a bad guy. I don’t know why BIGBANG has a bad boy image.” He later pointed out the hilarious irony of the group releasing a track titled ‘Bad Boy’ in 2014, but GD and Taeyang contradicted themselves by dropping ‘Good Boy’ one year later. He exclaimed in disbelief, “What the h*ll? You want to be a bad boy or a good boy? You decide and tell me.”

“I promise I’m not gonna become fat. I’m gonna be more shuai, ok mah?”

Things ended on a rather bittersweet note as Seungri said his last goodbyes to Singapore VIPs. After wrapping up promotions for this tour, the 28-year-old will soon be enlisting in the army later this year (G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang and Daesung will be discharged from June onwards). Sensing that fans would be sad to see him go, Seungri jokingly assured them that he will not get any fatter or uglier, and return “more shuai (handsome)” than before. Before bidding farewell, the warm-hearted singer brought out our national flag and paraded the stage as he took one final bow.

What was your favourite moment of the night? Tell us in the comments below!

Barely three months after wrapping up the Singapore leg of their 2018 Continue Tour, iKON was back in town to perform at Resorts World Theatre as part of Samsung’s Unleash Next Gen Bold event yesterday evening (21 Feb).

The private event saw over 1,500 lucky iKONICS in attendance, where they had the opportunity to experience the new Samsung Galaxy S10 series while getting upclose and personal with their favourite idol group. Besides performing three of their hit singles ‘Love Scenario’, ‘Killing Me’ and ‘Bling Bling’, the K-pop septet also sat down for a short interview with the hosts where they indulged fans by showing off their best selfie poses, breaking into a floss dance battle and more!

For those who weren’t able to make it, here’s a recap of the epicness that went down.

#1 Who did the floss dance better?

FYI, if you’re a fan of Fortnite, you’ll be thrilled to know that Samsung has made a K-pop skin modelled after iKON’s lovable maknae Chan, exclusively for those who will be purchasing the upcoming Galaxy S10 Plus. Of course, we can’t talk about Fortnite without mentioning the popular floss dance (we all know that the iKON members, especially Bobby, are super good at it). After a short dance demo by our resident muse, the rest of the members split into two teams for a floss dance-off – with Chan serving as the judge. Check out their moves!

#2 Their selfie game is strong AF.

It’s no secret that iKON adores taking selfies – just take a scroll through their individual Instagram accounts and you’ll know what we mean. So obviously we can’t leave without getting a few tips from the selfie experts, can we? Each member took turns to show off their favourite poses – from Chan’s adorable finger heart to Ju-ne channeling his inner Angry Bird – and we just can’t get over how cute they were!

#3 Wefies? No problem!

When asked about the feature they liked the most about the Galaxy S10, they confessed that it’s difficult to squeeze all seven members into the frame when taking a group shot – but thanks to its wide lens camera, they can now take wefies in ease. Using the new smartphone, the iKON members put the camera functions to the test by taking a photo with the audience. Yay, we’re in the same picture as oppas

#4 Fans are as beautiful as… the beach?

Three words to describe iKONICs? While Ju-ne went with the politically correct answer of “Love”, Jay took one for the team by ambiguously describing fans as the Sentosa Siloso Beach because it’s “beautiful” – just like iKONICs! While it may seem like a rather aww-inducing response, we have a sneaking suspicion that it’s to promote their upcoming show at Skechers Sundown Festival, which would be held at none other than the sandy shores this April. So much for being subtle, Jay!

#5 Flexing the S10 like–

At the end of the night, the iKON members were presented with their very own Galaxy S10 phones. While the rest of the audience looked on in envy, the ever-so-cheeky Bobby teased fans by jokingly showing off his new treasured possession.

Okay, you got us, Bobby – we’re off to preorder the phones.
