Movie of the Week: The Legend of Tarzan

30 Jun 2016 by Venetia Sng

Our favourite True Blood hunk plays Tarzan clad in pants (no loincloth thank you) and no the movie won’t be about how Tarzan came to be – that will only be seen in some flashbacks. Read on to find out why you should catch our movie of the week!

It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa—where he was raised by the great apes—behind for an aristocratic life in Victorian London as John Clayton, 3rd Viscount Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane Porter (Margot Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo Free State to serve as a trade emissary of the House of Commons, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the corrupt Belgian Captain Léon Rom (Christoph Waltz).

Here are 3 reasons why you need to catch The Legend of Tarzan this week!

#1 Amazing cast

Margot Robbie as Jane Porter.Tarzan Margot Robbie

Jim Broadbent and Samuel L. Jackson as Prime Minister and George Washington Williams respectively.Tarzan Samuel L Jackson

Christoph Waltz as Captain Leon Rom aka the big baddie. Tarzan Christoph Waltz

#2 Director David Yates

David Yates Harry Potter

If you’ve seen the final four films of the Harry Potter series, you’d know that David Yates can’t do any wrong. By the way, he directed the Harry Potter spin off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, coming out in August this year too!

#3 Alexander Skarsgård trained hard

Tarzan Alexander Skarsgard

Trainer Magnus Lygdback revealed that Skarsgård impressed the entire cast and crew with his physical transformation. He said, “On the first day of filming, when he took off his shirt for the first time, the first thing you noticed was his huge back. You could hear people whispering, that’s when I knew we had done it.” Co-star Margot Robbie added, ‘”World’s failed me. My jaw was on the floor. As was everyone else’s in the crew. People stopped working and were staring. Even the men were like wow. It was amazing. He worked so hard, I am so impressed.”

The Legend of Tarzan will be swinging to a cinema near you 30 June!
