7 seasons; 67 episodes, each with their own heart-stopping moments and dramatic twists. Over the last decade, the long-running HBO series Game of Thrones has gripped fans and critics alike with its intense imagery and shocking order of events that have thus far be atypical of other fantasy shows.

The final curtain is set to come down next month, as the eighth and final season of the series airs on 14 April. Before that happens, we (as does the North) remember the most iconic scenes and moments from this cult drama – non-explicit edition, of course. This should go without saying, but for the sake of all readers: spoilers ahead from the past seasons!

Most Game of Thrones-esque moment: Ned Stark’s execution
Season 1, Episode 9: Baelor

Ned Stark Death

If there’s really one point in the show that encapsulated Game of Thrones, it has to be this. When the show was first released, viewers had been following the footsteps of Eddard “Ned” Stark (played by Sean Bean, the most well-known cast member at the time), who had appeared on basically every poster and trailer of season one. With his sense of justice amidst a kingdom of backstabbing and death, it was not difficult to see that he was the protagonist, as normal fantasy series’ would dub their heroes.

However, all that changed at the end of the same season when Game of Thrones shocked the world by lopping off the head of House Stark’s leader in front of his screaming eldest daughter. Killing off its most prolific character was a daring move, one that cemented the series’ place as a fandom phenomenon – and only a sign of bigger things to come.

Most epic coming-of-age: Mother of Dragons
Season 1, Episode 10: Fire and Blood

Daenerys Targaryen
Credit: Gifer

Across the Narrow Sea and away from the continent of Westeros, where most of the series takes place, the exiled House Targaryen found its footing under the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. This title hadn’t come easy – spending most of season one mocked by her older brother Viserys and forced to marry a leader of the nomadic horse tribe Dothraki, Khal Drogo, she had only found her place after she seemingly lost everything, walking into her dead husband’s burning pyre.

When her tribesmen all thought her dead, she proved everyone wrong by rising from the ashes with three new-born dragons, the first born in a century and a half. It was then she was named the Mother of Dragons and leader of her husband’s tribesmen (known as khalasar), beginning her campaign to retake Westeros (and lift up the hearts of ardent Targaryen fans).

Most romantic moment: Kiss on the Wall
Season 3, Episode 6: The Climb

Jon Yggritte Kiss

Despite the series’ notorious reputation for violence, there have been some quiet, happy moments. One of them involves future leader of the Night’s Watch Jon Snow and his wildling lover Ygritte atop the Wall, just after a terrifying climb up the icy cliff. Against a beautiful sunset, the pair kissed as if nothing was wrong with the whole world – and if only just for that few seconds, we could almost believe the same.

Most shocking sequence: The Red Wedding
Season 3, Episode 9: The Rains of Castamere

Red Wedding

It’s been years since this fateful event, but we still can’t help the shivers down our spines when we hear the first notes of Lannister theme ‘Rains of Castamere’ and the words “The Lannisters send their regards”. A massacre orchestrated by the Freys, Boltons and Tywin Lannister, the Stark campaign under Ned’s heir Robb Stark came to an end when his pregnant wife Talisa, his mother Catelyn, himself as well as thousands of Northern soldiers were ruthlessly slaughtered at the wedding of his uncle Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. Absolute carnage in the penultimate episode of season three, fans were shell-shocked by its ferocity and learnt not to let anything past the plot of the show.

Most deserved death: The Purple Wedding
Season 4, Episode 2: The Lion and The Rose

Joffrey Baratheon Death Game of Thrones

There are plenty of wretched characters in Game of Thrones whose deaths you might have wished for. While many have since been dealt away with, none of them are quite as fulfilling as the death of the tyrannical Joffrey Baratheon at his very own wedding. Echoing the bloody Red Wedding the season before, the king is poisoned by his newly-wedded wife’s grandmother Olenna Tyrell and Master of Coin (as well as professional King’s Landing schemer) Petyr Baelish. Accusing his uncle Tyrion Lannister with his dying breath, his death was a pivotal point in Tyrion’s departure from King’s Landing – as well as a cause of celebration amongst many anti-Lannister fans.

Most obvious plot point: Jon Snow’s resurrection
Season 6 Episode 2: Home

Jon Snow's Resurrection
Credit: Giphy

Let’s face it: we all knew this was coming. When Jon was killed by his own men at the end of season five, fans were sure there was simply no way Game of Thrones could’ve pulled another death à la Ned Stark – the story had simply progressed too far, and he was the only one who had any inkling of the Night King’s threat. True enough, the arrival of sorceress Melisandre resulted in his return and although cliché, we’re glad that the Stark’s male line still held a glimmer of hope.

Most heart-wrenching death: “Hold the door!”
Season 6, Episode 5: The Door

Hodor Death Game of Thrones
Credit: Giphy

Witnessing the end of our favourite characters is always painful, but there is one that’s particularly heart-breaking. During psychic Bran Stark’s escape from the White Walkers alongside his friend Meera Reed and mentally-disabled Hodor, they fled from a cave which Meera pleaded with Hodor to “hold the door” of.

Bran’s lack of control over his telepathic time travel powers, however, forced the phrase into the head of a young servant from decades earlier named Wylis, who shortened it into “Hodor” – becoming his new name. Hodor was then left at the cavern to help the rest escape and eventually killed by the pursuing horde. Fans were stunned at the revelation of Hodor’s past and his sudden death, which is no doubt one of the saddest ones in Game of Thrones’ history.

Most intense battle: Battle of the Bastards
Season 6, Episode 9: Battle of the Bastards

Battle of the Bastards
Credit: Tenor

While the Battle of Blackwater Bay (Season 2, Episode 9) comes close to top in the scale of epic battles, we have to give it to the Battle of the Bastards – the fight for Stark ancestral home Winterfell had us at the edge of our seats the whole time. Facing off were Ramsay Bolton and Jon Snow, both then hailed as bastard sons of House Bolton and Stark, each with their own force and something to prove: Ramsay, to be the rightful ruler of the North by crushing the Starks once and for all; and Jon, to take his father’s place as the last male in the Stark bloodline.

No matter which side you rooted for, the scene where Jon faces an oncoming charge from Bolton’s knights will forever stay etched in your minds, and the final rout of Bolton forces by Jon and Sansa was undeniably satisfying to Stark fans.

Most satisfying revenge: Arya kills the Freys
Season 7, Episode 1: Dragonstone

Arya Stark Game of Thrones
Credit: Steam Community

It could be Sansa setting the hounds loose to tear up Ramsay Bolton (Season 6, Episode 9), or Cersei Lannister blowing up her enemies in King’s Landing which caused her last child to commit suicide (Season 6, Episode 10) – but those who lamented the fateful Red Wedding were in for some well-deserved vengeance against the Freys.

Arriving home to Westeros after training in the House of Black and White in Braavos, Arya Stark was able to kill two Frey men, dismembering their bodies and baking them into a pie which she then presented to their father Walder Frey while disguised as a serving girl. After watching him eat it, she revealed her identity and slit his throat while watching him die slowly.

With this occurring three seasons after the Red Wedding, it seems that revenge is definitely best served cold (and in a pie).

You know her as the Brit songbird who owned the charts with her oh-so-catchy pop jams ‘FRIENDS’, ‘2002’ and ‘Alarm’, but there’s so much more to Anne-Marie than her platinum-selling monster hits.

Riding an unstoppable wave of success since featuring on Clean Bandit’s global hit ‘Rockabye’, the Essex-born songstress has since shot to fame with her knack for churning out surefire banger after banger. While her rise to pop stardom seemingly occurred overnight, it was a journey riddled with self-doubt, anxiety and criticism.

A post shared by ANNE♥MARIE (@annemarie) on

Despite the ups and downs, it was all thanks to these experiences that made her into who she is today. The Anne-Marie we know now is confident, honest and unafraid to speak her mind about what she believes in – hence bringing us to the title of her highly-acclaimed debut record, Speak Your Mind.

Following her chart-topping debut, things are only about to get even better for Anne-Marie as she begins to embark on her sell-out headlining tour, which includes a stop in Singapore this April. If you’ve yet to check her out, we’re here to catch you up to speed on everything you need to know about this rising pop star.

#1 She got her start in musicals

At the age of six, little Anne-Marie had already landed a notable role in the West End production, Les Misérables. “I thought I would be in musicals for the rest of my life,” said the talented singer in an interview with Evening Standard, who later on starred in the 1996 classic Whistle Down The Wind alongside Jessie J when she was 12. “But then my voice changed and went lower, so I went off on my own direction and started writing my own songs. Being in musicals really taught me how to tell a story through singing.”

#2 A singer by day, karate master by night

Besides being one of the biggest breakout pop stars, Anne-Marie has a black belt in shotokan karate and is also a three-time world karate champion. In a radio interview with the Confidential on Nova, she explained: “I started when I was nine and carried on doing it. I am my own bodyguard, I don’t need to hire anyone.” We love a strong, independent woman who’s fully capable of protecting herself and others!

#3 She has an eye for collaborations

From touring the world with Rudimental to hitting the studios with Ed Sheeran (which eventually spawned the hit single ‘2002’), the ‘Ciaos Adios’ singer never lets us down when it comes to collaborations. Her never-ending list of collaborators also includes the likes of Clean Bandit, Marshmello, David Guetta, Nick Jonas… the list goes on.

In addition, we previously found out that Anne-Marie was “really into Logic at the moment” and expressed her desire to work with “people who aren’t scared to speak their minds” like Anderson Paak and Eminem, so we wouldn’t be surprised if these stellar music-makers decide to team up for a killer collab one day.

#4 She has the midas touch

It’s official: everything the banger-machine touches turns to gold (or rather, platinum). All the tracks in her discography are straight-up bops, so it’s no wonder that three of her hit singles – ‘Alarm’, ‘Ciao Adios’ and the Marshmello-assisted ‘FRIENDS’ – have achieved multi-platinum status, amongst other achievements. Way to go, Anne-Marie!

#5 She’s just like any of us

At the end of the day, she really isn’t that different from the rest of us. Having struggled with anxiety since the age of 12, the singer confessed that she has been plagued with self-esteem and body confidence issues throughout her career. “Sometimes I feel good, and sometimes I feel bad. Anxiety is my biggest challenge, but I try to stay honest about my feelings in my songs,” she got real in an interview with Glamour magazine. “I want people to enjoy my songs and feel positive listening to them, but I also want them to feel something. I like to think my music is therapy for other people because, ultimately, that’s what it’s been for me.”

If that doesn’t make you love Anne-Marie even more, we’re not sure what will.

This post was brought to you by Lushington Entertainments.

Be sure to show Anne-Marie lots of love when she comes to Singapore for her Speak Your Mind tour on 9 April 2019 at the Capitol Theatre! Tickets are still up for grabs, so head over to APACTix to snatch ’em up.

In what would probably be one of the biggest scandals to hit the K-pop industry in recent years, Seungri from popular five-member boy band BIGBANG has found himself in the global spotlight after getting embroiled in a list of serious allegations resulting from an escalated turn of events – in just less than two months. For those who have yet to catch up with the news, we’ve created a chronological timeline to help you understand how these allegations imploded to this magnitude, which led to Seungri’s recent retirement from the entertainment industry. Here’s what went down.

28 January

MBC’s News Desk revealed a CCTV footage of an assault that took place late last year at Burning Sun, a club reportedly co-managed by Seungri. The victim, Kim Sang Kyo, who was attempting to save a woman who was sexually assaulted, was allegedly attacked by security guards and the club’s director, Mr Jang, before getting arrested by the police as an assailant.

29 January

Burning Sun issued a statement signed by both CEOs, Lee Sung Hyun and Lee Moon Ho, with regard to the reported assault that occured at their club. In the letter, they apologised for their staffs’ behaviour before assuring that they had fired the staff member involved, and planned to cooperate fully with the investigation.

In addition to the release of the statement, CCTV footage from the club that was uploaded onto YouTube last year became a cause of concern when it showed a woman being dragged down the club’s hallway. Despite having reported the assault to the police, no action was taken and the footage was reportedly deleted by Burning Sun.

As a response to the allegations, the club had addressed the accusations on their now-deleted Instagram with an account of what transpired that day, denying the public’s consensus that sexual assault had taken place in their club. The club’s director also shared further CCTV footage with news outlet E-Daily to corroborate their stance, where he also took the opportunity to clarify Seungri’s involvement with the club, and that the BIGBANG member was absent on the day of Mr Kim’s assault.

30 January

A representative from Burning Sun further clarified to Kyunghyan Shinmun about Seungri’s involvement with the club, stating that while he participates in the management of the club, Seungri is neither the CEO nor the owner. On the other hand, KBS News had reported that Seungri was a director of the club though he had already resigned from his position the week before. They also revealed a testimony given by a former Burning Sun employee who addressed the CCTV footage of a woman getting sexually assaulted by a man in the VIP room, and suggested that illegal drug use occurred in the area in question.

31 January

The CEO of YG Entertainment (home to BIGBANG), Yang Hyun Suk, made an official statement where he addressed the doubts surrounding Seungri’s whereabouts during the assault and cleared the singer of any involvement as he was in the club till 3am, three hours before the incident occurred. He also stated that Seungri’s resignation as the club’s executive director was due to his upcoming military enlistment, which required him to comply with the laws of military service that prohibited soldiers from engaging in any for-profit activities.

Meanwhile, the alleged victim of the Burning Sun assault, Kim Sang Kyo, was accused of lying by the woman he was supposedly saving as it turned out that he was sexually harassing her.

2 February

Seungri spoke out about the recent controversies in an apologetic statement on Instagram. He emphasised that he was not present when the incident occurred, even though he heard about it a few days later and failed to condone the violence he saw in the footage. He went on to address his involvement with Burning Sun, where he only took on the role of an executive director who was in charge of promotions at the club, further clarifying that the club’s operation and management was not part of his scope.

A full translation of his post can be found here.

4 February

Having been swept up in various controversies within a short number of days, the CEO of Burning Sun, Lee Moon Ho, issued a statement where he stepped forward to apologise to Seungri for involving him, reiterating that the K-pop idol only contributed in the capacity of a consultant that assisted in contacting foreign DJs.

In addition, Burning Sun released an official statement which detailed the club’s plans moving forward. Of which highlighted the removal of Director Jang, the VIP rooms as well as the increased installation of CCTVs.

13 February

A photo of Seungri and a former female employee of Burning Sun was being circulated online. The woman faced a marijuana charge last year and to address the public’s growing suspicions of drug use, Seungri expressed to the media that he did not know who the woman was and that the photo was nothing more than him obliging a request.

15 February

The Seoul Police Department conducted a raid at Burning Sun and the Yeoksam District police unit, where they confiscated necessary data, CCTV footages as well as programs that were related to the suspicions of drugs, sex crimes and alleged collusion of police officers.

16 February

Seungri shared his thoughts about the Burning Sun controversies and apologised to fans publicly at his first solo concert in Seoul. He began by saying, “It was all due to my negligence. I’m sorry for causing disappointment for so many people, and I’m reflecting on what has happened. As a celebrity, I will think and act more carefully from now on.” He then finished with a promise to conclude the concert well.

17 February

Burning Sun was shut down as the investigation of drug-dealing widened to more clubs within the Gangnam area.

20 February

It was reported that the police were in the midst of investigating Burning Sun executives, which included Seungri. Staff members were also called down to the station to give their statements on Seungri’s role at the club.

26 February

News outlet SBS funE released a KakaoTalk conversation that they had obtained between Seungri and three other individuals, which implied his involvement in lobbying for investors by soliciting sexual favours in exchange for financial support in the investment company, Yuri Holdings. Prior to the establishment of the company in March 2016, it is believed that Seungri had already created this group chat with the intent of arranging prostitutes for potential investors.

According to the text messages on 6 December 2015, Seungri had instructed a trusted employee from Burning Sun to “prepare a spot in the main area” of Club Arena, a club located in Gangnam district, and to “call the girls” for a foreign investor and the group she was with. Though the messages did not explicitly confirm if actual sexual favors were exchanged, it was implied by a representative of Yuri Holdings in the group text that similar arrangements were made.

A few hours after the report, YG Entertainment released an official statement claiming that the text messages were untrue fabrications. Yuri Holdings also issued a similar statement where they stated their beliefs that someone with malicious intent towards Seungri had fabricated these messages as a grudge.

Shortly after, the Seoul Police Department announced their decision to launch an investigation into the escort service claims reported by the media, officially making Seungri a person of interest.

27 February

The journalist from SBS funE who broke the news, responded to the accusations of fabrication with a firm stance that everything she reported was true, and that nothing but crude expressions in the messages were edited for reporting purposes.

Seungri also released a statement through YG Entertainment that expressed his desire to actively cooperate with authorities in the investigations so as to quickly resolve the matter. Later that evening, he arrived at the police station for questioning.

On the same day, old Vietnamese news reports had resurfaced of Seungri supposedly inhaling nitrous oxide (or better known as laughing gas) while on a visit to Hanoi in 2017. Though the pop star had affirmed that he never did the deed, the reappearance of such reports only added further scrutiny to the star with the current allegations he had.

28 February

Prior to his arrival at the police station, Seungri had canceled all of his upcoming appearances which included his concerts in Osaka and Jakarta. He was released eight and a half hours later, where it was revealed that he had submitted to urine and follicle tests, as well as answered questions pertaining to the drug and sexual escort service allegations made against him.

Later in the day, Seungri was found to have tested negative for the first round of drug tests.

1 March

Despite the ongoing investigations, the Seoul Police Department had yet to receive an original copy of the alleged chain of text messages that was first published by the SBS funE reporter in her exclusive article. As both YG Entertainment and Yuri Holdings have maintained their stance that the messages were fabricated, obtaining the original copy of the text messages would definitely help to confirm its validity.

However, SBS funE had reported that the original copy of the text messages had already been secured by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission when a whistleblower submitted it to them on 22 February. Based on their interview with the anonymous source, the messages suggested a deep connection with the police thus a decision was made to report the text messages to the commission instead.

4 March

News reports revealed that the Seoul Police Department was aware of the Commission’s possession of the original copy of text messages and have made a formal request for them to cooperate.

8 March

Seungri has confirmed his enlistment date as an active duty soldier on 25 March.

Alongside this announcement, MBC News shared their findings from Burning Sun’s internal documents that refuted Seungri’s previous statement that he held a seemingly smaller role in the club’s management. The discovery showed that he was listed as one of four executive directors as well as the amount that Seungri had invested in the club, which listed him as a corporate promoter – a phrase used to refer to someone who helped to form the company.

9 March

Because of all the bad press that Seungri had been getting, the online fan community DC BIGBANG Gallery released a statement and petition calling for Seungri’s removal from the group and YG’s roster.

10 March

The police issued a search warrant for Club Arena, where they were reported to have obtained related data to the sexual escort service allegations although there was no given conformation on the parties that were involved. At the same time, results on Seungri’s follicle drug test proved negative, and confirmation was made with regard to the authenticity of the 2015 text messages.

Seungri was officially booked and questioned by the police on charges of violating South Korea’s Acts on Pimping and Prostitution, and its punishments alongside three to four other people who were part of the KakaoTalk group chat.

11 March

The police revealed that several other celebrities who were also in the KakaoTalk group chat have been called in as witnesses, and have underwent interrogation about the conversation that was exchanged. It was also revealed that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency had prohibited Seungri from leaving the country due to him becoming a suspect in the investigation.

To add on, news outlet SBS funE released yet another exclusive report on the group chat which involved a total of eight people including Seungri and two other male singers; who were believed to have shared hidden camera footage and photos of women. A later update reportedly identified Jung Joon Young as one of the individuals who shared illegal hidden camera footage in the chat.

The report also saw the release of more text messages that were dated 9 January 2016; where a video and photos of a man and woman engaging in sexual intercourse were shared in the group chat. Based off the exchange in the text messages, it seemed that Seungri had recognised the man in the video, who also happened to be in their chat group and was unfazed by the content; implying that he had been aware that he was being filmed while the woman who appeared to be intoxicated was unaware. It is to be believed that most of the content shared were of women who did not know that they were being filmed.

Shortly after that, Seungri took to his Instagram to announce his retirement after 10 years in the entertainment industry, citing his intention to “protect the honour of YG and BIGBANG”.

Be Inspired By These 8 Kickass Female TV Role Models

8 Mar 2019 by Jasmine Ong

In recent years, television has given us some of the most memorable female characters who have reminded us what it is like to fight against the odds and stand up for what we want. Be it kicking butt in a physical fight or engaging in a war of wit and words, these powerful leading ladies prove that gender should not define a person’s capabilities. In celebration of International Women’s Day, here are eight strong female characters who will inspire you to empower your own life – one episode at a time.

Jessica Jones (Marvel’s Jessica Jones)

If there’s anyone who doesn’t let her mental condition hold her back from living her best life, it’s Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). Despite suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), she possesses a no-holds-barred attitude which allows her to be proudly unapologetic of her personality as she freely voices her unfiltered opinions on everything she disagrees with, especially misogynistic individuals. Though she may also be seen as somewhat flawed, her willingness to fight for others who are victimised like she was, is exactly what makes her a strong and defiant superhero of today.

Jessica Jones’s words of wisdom: “Feel how you feel. You have nothing to forgive yourself for.”

Kimmy Schmidt (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)

8-Women-to-Inspire-You-This-International-Woman's Day-02-Kimmy-Schmidt

After living most of her life in a bunker underground as part of an apocalyptic cult, integrating back into society would have been quite a challenge for Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) if not for her constant optimism. Even though her life has been an overwhelming mix of hilarity and absurdity, she still makes the most of it as a survivor. While she accepts that she had gone through situations that were beyond her control, she doesn’t let these hurdles discourage her from following her dreams. Her tenacity is a testament to the human spirit which we should all aim to replicate in our lives.

Kimmy Schmidt’s words of wisdom: “Life beats you up. You can either curl up in a ball and die, or you can stand up and say, ‘We’re different and you can’t break us!’”

Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation)

There’s always been a need for strong female representation in the media, but they don’t necessarily need to come in the form of a well-versed fighter-type that saves the day. Hailed as one of television’s best characters, Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) goes down in history as one of the most memorable females who manages to overshadow her imperfections with bounding energy, an unrelenting attitude and a heart of gold. Employed in a government profession where it isn’t easy to cut through red tape, her relentless optimism and unwavering belief in herself teaches women to embrace their flaws as they harness positivity to push past resistance and cynics who say otherwise.

Leslie Knope’s words of wisdom: “Be the Leslie Knope of whatever you do.”

Liz Lemon (30 Rock)

8-Women-to-Inspire-You-This-International-Woman's Day-04-Liz-Lemon
Credit: jamiecole.com

As probably one of the first few inspirational feminists to appear on television, Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) resonates with women who deal with everyday discrimination. As a woman in a male-dominated environment, it’s not easy for her to deal with her patriarchal boss and group of male subordinates especially when they often treat her with insensitive remarks that tend to question her abilities. Instead of letting the comments affect her, she takes it in her stride and claps back with a sarcastic rebuttal or a level-headed response; proving that a woman’s actions are not stereotypically controlled by their emotions. Apart from holding her own in the face of gender inequality, she still manages to change the perception of dating – that it’s okay to be single until the time is right, and nobody but you should have the authority to dictate your life.

Liz Lemon’s words of wisdom: “There ain’t no party like a Liz Lemon party ‘cause a Liz Lemon party is mandatory!”

Midge Maisel (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel)

8-Women-to-Inspire-You-This-International-Woman's Day-05-Midge-Maisel
Credit: midge-maisel.tumblr.com

The 1950s was an exceptionally tough time for women especially with the glaringly apparent patriarchal system, where women were often overlooked for their capabilities because of their gender. Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) was one of those women who routinely observed her domestic duties until she decides to break free from the suffocating society she lives in as an unapologetic rebel. Instead of continually accepting whatever roles society has pre-determined for her, she finds courage and determination to work toward her dreams even when faced with humiliation and public scrutiny. The setbacks she faces also further motivates her to stay true to herself and her beliefs, as she uses her newfound stand-up comic skills to give women a voice by highlighting the double standards they face with unabashed confidence during her set.

Midge Maisel’s words of wisdom: “Why do women have to pretend to be something that they’re not?”

Olivia Pope (Scandal)

Quite possibly the most intelligent female character to ever grace the small screen, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is a fierce boss lady who fixes the problems of influential politicians in Washington D.C. Despite swimming with the sharks in murky political waters, she is never afraid of speaking her mind even if it threatens to hurt and impact those around her. From solving scandals to finding loopholes in sticky situations, Olivia uses her critical thinking skills to ensure that she delivers satisfactory results that conclude with justice getting served. Boldly confident and fearless, she is a force to be reckoned with who inspires us to know our worth, and be courageous even when the odds are stacked against us.

Olivia Pope’s words of wisdom: “I am many things. Stupid is not one of them.”

Peggy Carter (Marvel’s Agent Carter)

8-Women-to-Inspire-You-This-International-Woman's Day-07-Peggy-Carter
Credit: yourreactiongifs.tumblr.com

Originating from the Marvel universe, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is an inspirational non-superhero character who resonates with women of today. As a female living in the gender-oppressive 1950s, stubbornness and wit are her strengths – which often challenges her male peers to think before questioning her capabilities. As a progressive woman who takes charge of her own life, she is the early definition of a tough lady who rejects society’s mould of a woman. Despite being underestimated by her male colleagues, she never fails to teach them a lesson in respect by correcting their perception with her comparable capabilities, proving that domesticity is not all that defines the female gender.

If it wasn’t for the list of unfortunate things that happened to her, Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) might have just been like any ordinary, witty high-school outcast instead of a crime-solving teenager who had mastered the art of sleuthing, thanks to her side gig at her father’s private detective agency. She often seems like she is made with nerves of steel, but her close-calls in dangerous situations never fails to show off her vulnerable side; which reminds us that it’s okay to be emotional when we need to be. In addition to her ability to distinguish her emotions, she is also extremely determined and resilient which is evident in the way she stands up for what’s right. The experiences she went through not only helped to shape her but also aided her growth in becoming a better version of herself.

Veronica Mars’ words of wisdom: “This is where I belong, in the fight. It’s who I am.”

Be bold, strong and fearless – just like these fictional heroines. Happy International Women’s Day!
