Say all you want about them, but there’s no arguing the fact that MOMOLAND’s on top of their game right now.
Just one look at the record-smashing views for their music video of ‘BBoom BBoom’ (a whopping 200 million and counting) and you will know why they are all the rage these days. While their rise to stardom seemingly happened overnight, it wasn’t exactly the most smooth-sailing ride. Pieced together after a cutthroat survival programme, MOMOLAND’s official debut was pushed back due to the lack of fans for their final mission, and they haven’t had much luck in the subsequent years either.
It wasn’t until earlier this year that they successfully found viral fame thanks to their indisputable bop of the century ‘BBoom BBoom’, spawning a new dance craze that got the whole world up on their feet. Following the same formula of bubblegum hooks, quirky charms and colourful aesthetics, the ninesome wasted no time in stepping up the momentum with their equally infectious comeback track ‘BAAM’.
Although the girls were initially concerned whether it would be able to match up to the success of their legendary hit, we doubt they have much to worry about. Their music video has already chalked up a solid 35 million views to date, and it’s only a matter of time before it blows up. In an exclusive email interview, we chat to the girls about expectations, teamwork and future goals.
Hi MOMOLAND! How do you feel about ‘BBoom BBoom’ being such a huge hit on a global scale?
Hyebin: We scored our first crowning glory within a few weeks of promotion for ‘BBoom BBoom’. It felt so surreal and we even started questioning if we really did get the first place and whether it’s true that many people are liking it.
You just made your comeback with ‘BAAM’. Do you feel the pressure to match up to the success of ‘BBoom BBoom’?
Hyebin: Because ‘BBoom BBoom’ has received so much love, we couldn’t help but worry whether ‘BAAM’ would sit well with the listeners this time round. But we feel that this is a fun song that displays our distinct and funky style, so we hope that people will enjoy it as much as ‘BBoom BBoom’!
In your new reality show MOMOLAND’s Saipan Land, you were given 48 hours of free time. How would you spend it?
Jane: I would like to travel with just our members, without the managers. We’ve been to so many places, but it was all for work. It would be nice to go on a trip to open areas like the sea!
JooE: I want to get a driving license when I turn 20 so I can drive around in a car during my solo travels.
Having nine girls in a group is no small number. How do you resolve conflicts?
Daisy: There aren’t really any conflicts between us. I think washing up is probably the biggest concern for us because there are only two bathrooms in our dorm, so we have to figure out who to go first every morning!
JooE has tried out hosting – is there anything the other members would like to venture into?
Hyebin: I would like to appear in an entertainment programme with all nine members! So far, we haven’t had many opportunities to guest on a show together, so it would be great if we could participate in more team activities.
Congrats on your Japan debut! How does it feel like to finally meet your international fans?
Hyebin: It was our first time going abroad for performance schedules, so we were very worried. However, there were a lot more fans than we thought who came to see us, so we managed to end our promotions well. Besides Japan, there will be more overseas schedules ahead so please look forward for it!
This will also be your first time performing in Singapore for HallyuPopFest 2018! Any words for Singapore fans?
Nancy: Although we haven’t been to Southeast Asia yet, we heard that many people love our songs so we really want to check out if it’s true!
Jane: We’ve been doing a lot of music shows and events, but there weren’t many chances for us to do big stages. We’re really looking forward to HallyuPopFest and can’t wait to meet our fans soon!
MOMOLAND will be peforming for HallyuPopFest 2018 on 7 and 8 September at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. P/S: Can’t get enough of the girls? Grab a copy of our latest issue which comes with a poster of MOMOLAND! Out on newsstands now.
