Thrillingly spooky and filled with dark humour, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has surpassed the Sabrina Spellman of yesteryear to bring you a new and bewitchingly relevant teenage witch in her iconic red coat – and she’s undeniably woke AF.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows Sabrina Spellman, who has to choose between her mortal and witch life on her 16th birthday. Being half-mortal and half-witch, she is given the chance to either embrace her powers on the path of Night or forsake them for the path of Light. However, instead of choosing either paths, Sabrina decides to create her own path where she navigates the life and temptations from both sides.

Whether you’re a longtime Sabrina The Teenage Witch fan or entirely new to Greendale, it wouldn’t take you long to get completely enthralled with the series and its colourful ensemble of characters. Unlike its beloved ’90s counterpart, the new Netflix reboot is soaked in mystery, horror and all things witchcraft. Although the title of the series may be a tell-tale sign of what’s to come, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina serves up more than just the chills.

Rising actress Kiernan Shipka, who plays Sabrina Spellman, shares that she expects the audience to be in for a wild ride. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina definitely lives up to its name because there’s a lot of action-packed things to watch out for. I think the audience is going to expect horror, but I don’t know if they’re going to expect the level in which we take things to a certain point.”

And, she was not wrong. The masterful and well-paced storytelling was intricately weaved with intense scenes like Sabrina’s initiation into the Academy of Unseen Arts, as well as character development that was both subtle and impactful; especially with the introduction of Susie Putnam. Instead of blatantly explaining to viewers why she was being bullied at school, the story leaves room for the audience to figure it out on their own, through tactful and mature dialogue between characters.

The mature tone of the show allows for strong emphasis on the discussion of feminism and patriarchy (which were also contributors to the problems the characters face), and it is no wonder that the prevailing feminist theme continues throughout the series. As a female lead that’s portrayed an inherently feminist character on top of being an activist, Kiernan had this to say: “It’s wonderful to be part of a show that has such a strong and empowering message. I’m really excited that young girls and young children in the general sense, who are impressionable, are going to get to see the show and grow up with something that’s a very positive influence.”

All in all, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a spellbinding thrill ride steeped in youth empowerment that is eerily relatable and befitting of a binge on Halloween night.

It’s about two weeks until we journey back to the Wizarding World and join Newt Scamander on his exciting new adventure as he takes on the next big wizarding threat, Gellert Grindelwald.

Before we dive into what we can expect in the sequel, let’s recap on what has happened thus far. We know that Newt Scamander left New York City on a good note after rounding up all of his magical creatures and helping MACUSA expose Percival Graves as the real Gellert Grindelwald. This year, the highly-anticipated follow-up will continue from where the 2016 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them left us, as Newt reunites with new and old friends that include characters we know and love from the Harry Potter franchise. So, what exciting things will Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald have in store for us?

Calling all potterheads! In collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic, we are inviting O’Level students to catch the exclusive movie premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Simply register here to secure your spot, limited to the first 100 students only.

#1 There’s more than one Scamander!

What-To-Expect-In-Fantastic-Beasts-The-Crimes-of-Grindelwald-01-Theseus-Scamander

You may have heard his name being mentioned in the first film as a famous war hero when Representatives of the International Confederation of Wizards recognised Newt’s surname. A celebrated war hero, former auror and Newt’s older sibling, Theseus Scamander is assigned by the Ministry of Magic to assist Newt in capturing Gellert Grindelwald. Though the brothers have a pretty close relationship, they are both in love with Theseus’ fiancée Leta Lestrange, which makes for a rather awkward reunion…  Uh-oh!

#2 Meet the mysterious girl from the notorious Lestrange family

What-To-Expect-In-Fantastic-Beasts-The-Crimes-of-Grindelwald-02a-Leta-Lestrange

Aside from knowing that she’s the girl who has the Scamander brothers enthralled and that she has the same surname as the horrendous Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter, not much else is known about Leta Lestrange. However, in this sequel, we will find out more about her pure-blood lineage that categorises her as part of the Sacred Twenty-Eight as well as her familial ties to Credence Barebone.

#3 The relationship between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald

What-To-Expect-In-Fantastic-Beasts-The-Crimes-of-Grindelwald-03a-Albus-Dumbledore

Before he was the beloved Hogwarts Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore was a young professor who taught Transfiguration at Hogwarts. It is there where he develops a strong bond with his student, Newt Scamander, whom he enlists to help take down Grindelwald in the second Fantastic Beasts installment. Don’t worry if you’re not privy to the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, as this sequel will give you a more in-depth look into their lives.

#4 More Fantastic and Magical Creatures

What-To-Expect-In-Fantastic-Beasts-The-Crimes-of-Grindelwald-04-Fantastic-And-Magical-Creatures

If you loved the magical creatures you met in the first film, get ready to meet more visually stunning beasts in the upcoming sequel. Returning favourites Pickett the Bowtruckle and the Niffler, will appear alongside new cuddly baby Nifflers as well as the terrifying ancient Chinese mythological creature, Zouwu. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for a fluffy bird known as the Augurey, which is a featured creature in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child!

#5 Oh my NAGINI

What-To-Expect-In-Fantastic-Beasts-The-Crimes-of-Grindelwald-05-Nagini

Now that the snake is out of the bag, we can expect more details about Voldemort’s trusty horcrux and sidekick, Nagini. Contrary to many beliefs that Nagini is an Animagus, she does not have the luxury to change whenever she wishes as Nagini suffers from a blood curse which would turn her into a beast permanently. It should be noted that not all Maledictus are evil so keep your reservations about her till the end!

#6 Credence is alive!

What-To-Expect-In-Fantastic-Beasts-The-Crimes-of-Grindelwald-06-Credence-Barebone

We last saw Credence Barebone get attacked with deadly spells and basically destroyed as an Obscurus, thanks to Seraphina Picquery and her aurors from MACUSA. But depending on how observant you were, there was actually a single shred of his Obscurus that managed to escape – which would result in how Credence is alive and well in this sequel. The second film will also see the growth of Credence’s character as he befriends Nagini and goes on a quest to uncover his true identity.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opens in cinemas on 16 November 2018.

Singapore ReVeluvs were treated to a night of memorable performances by K-pop sweethearts Red Velvet at their first solo concert in Singapore.

Known for their dual-concept charms that see them alternating between quirky earworms like ‘The Red Flavour’ and ‘Dumb Dumb’ and sensual tunes like ‘Bad Boy’ and ‘Peekaboo’, the five-member group delighted the 4000-strong crowd with a highly-entertaining set peppered with spontaneous banter, flamboyant costumes changes and lots (we repeat – lots) of fan service.

RR-RedVelvet-Redmare-5

All went well, until Joy sustained a shoulder injury on stage and had to be rushed to the hospital midway. Despite being one woman down, the remaining four members Seulgi, Irene, Wendy and Yeri soldiered on and ended the night on a successful note. We hope for a fast recovery for Joy, and we can’t wait for the girls to return to our shores as five again!

Here are some of the most memorable moments of #REDMAREinSG.

#1 When they taught us the moves to ‘Power Up’

Taking the stage in their dainty white tops and red skirts, the quintet kicked off the concert with their definitive hits ‘Russian Roulette’, ‘Power Up’ and ‘Cookie Jar’. While most groups would simply do their self-introductions, the ladies of Red Velvet took some time to teach the audience their iconic ‘baby shark’ and ‘banana peel’ moves from their latest summer smash ‘Power Up’.

However, it seemed like everybody already knew how to dance to it almost perfectly – much to the girls’ surprise. “You guys seem to know the moves even if we didn’t teach you!” exclaimed Irene.

#2 When they rocked animal-themed outfits

Things were just starting to get wild, literally. As the stage transformed into a safari theme, the members appeared sporting colourful animal-themed outfits as they continued on with the energetic bops of ‘Mr. E’, ‘Zoo’ and ‘Happiness’. Just look at how adorable the Red Velvet girls were!

#3 When they quick-wittedly covered up for Joy

Shortly after performing ‘Bad Dracula’, Joy was seen bent over in pain and ended up retreating backstage as soon as the song ended. While waiting for Joy, the other four members decided to spend some time interacting with the audience – where they talked about everything from their new hair colours, to their favourite local food (chilli crab and kaya toast).

They even went to all corners of the stage to get upclose and personal with fans, which made the concert feel all the more intimate. “It feels like we’re having a fanmeeting because we’re talking to you for a long time,” Yeri added. “We don’t get to see you guys often, so let’s talk a lot today!”

#4 When they handled Joy’s absence professionally

What was supposedly a malfunctioning in-ear turned out to a shoulder injury when Joy emerged from the curtains in tears. With her right arm in a sling, she apologised in-between sobs for not being able to perform any further as she had to head to the hospital to receive treatment, leaving the remaining members to power through the rest of the show as a quartet.

Despite the unfortunate incident, we were in awe at how the girls swiftly took over most of Joy’s lines to fill in for her absence and improvised their way through the set without any hiccups. Also, can we just take a moment to cry over how they’d always leave an empty spot for Joy? OT5 feels!

#5 When Red Velvet noticed (!!!) the fan projects

Fan projects are a common sight at K-pop concerts, where fans are expected to raise up banners during certain songs to show appreciation for our favourite artistes. Before the concert, local ReVeluvs were handing out pink hearts and slogans with the words ‘Go go, Red Velvet’ to the audience – which managed to catch the attention of Red Velvet. Fan project success!

#6 When they ditched their usual cutesy image

As much as we love Red Velvet’s usual brand of bright peppy melodies, we just can’t get enough of their charismatic ‘velvet’ side. All decked out in sequin outfits and killer heels, they were oozing major girl crush appeal as they performed a fierce rendition of ‘Bad Boy’ and ‘Peekaboo’. They then proceeded to further hype up the crowd with a remix of ‘Dumb Dumb’, which included an unexpected robot dance break. Gotta love that beat drop!

#7 When they couldn’t stop apologising to fans

Two hours went by in a flash, and soon they were getting ready for their encore stage. Switching up their elaborate costumes for casual T-shirts and shorts, the girls came out to greet fans one last time before saying their final goodbyes with ‘Ice Cream Cake’ and ‘Day One’. Towards the end of the show, the members didn’t forget to reassure us that Joy had reached the hospital safely.

Instead of simply saying their individual farewell speeches, they took turns apologising and thanking fans during their goodbye ments. “We are apologetic because we couldn’t show you a perfect stage, but it’s because of all the energy you’ve given us that we can finish the show well,” said Seulgi. Wendy also added, “Next time when we come back, it will be the five of us!”

As the girls promised, we shall see Red Velvet as five when they return to Singapore – bigger, stronger and better than ever before.

The members of veteran K-pop sensation Highlight are many things: singers, dancers, producers, actors… the list goes on. But after their recent appearance at the media conference for The Shilla Duty Free’s 4th anniversary celebrations, we think they should really consider adding ‘best brand ambassadors’ to their resume.

In town to grace the celebratory event as the appointed face of the global duty free store, the quartet (sans leader Doojoon who’s currently serving military service) had us in stitches with their hilarious attempts at promoting Shilla with every opportunity they get. It’s been two years since Singapore fans last saw them at their 2015 fanmeeting, but we’re glad to see that they’re still the same goofy boys we know and love from their early BEAST days. Besides their ambassador duties, they also didn’t forget to talk a bit about their music, brotherhood and keeping in touch with Doojoon. Read on for more highlights!

Highlight at Shilla 4th Year Thank You Media Conference

#1 When Dongwoon basically claimed they are immortal

Thank you Singapore!👊

A post shared by 손동운 (@highlight_dw) on

Looking sharp in well-tailored suits, the Highlight members were all smiles for the media conference as they answered the barrage of media questions effortlessly. Despite being in a more serious setting, it didn’t stop maknae Dongwoon from his cheeky ways. “First of all, I would like to congratulate The Shilla Duty Free for their 4th year anniversary,” he addressed the crowd. “I’m very thankful to join them on this special occasion, and I hope that we can be with them until their 400th year.” Talk about taking brand loyalty to another level!

#2 When Junhyung confessed he gets inspiration for songs from Shilla

As the genius producer of the group, there’s no doubting Junhyung’s solid composing chops. So where does the multi-talented idol get his inspiration from? “I usually get my inspiration from my daily life, but today, I think I will get my inspiration from The Shilla Duty Free instead,” he began with a straight face (but ended up failing spectacularly and surrendering to a fit of laughter). Oh Junhyung, #YouTried.

#3 When Yoseob credited Shilla for his ever-so-youthful appearance

Known for his baby-faced charms and youthful-looking appearance, we can’t help but wonder how does the 28-year-old take care of his skin. His secret? Yup – you guessed it. “Probably because of The Shilla Duty Free,” he exclaimed. “I regard it as a gift from my parents, but if I were to put in any effort, it would be done at The Shilla Duty Free.”

#4 When Kikwang expressed his interest in becoming Shilla’s CF model

Kikwang has landed his fair share of acting roles throughout the years, such as his recent small-screen comeback in horror romcom Lovely Horribly alongside Park Si Hoo and Song Ji Hyo (second male lead syndrome, anybody?). When asked about a role he wishes to take on in the future, the budding actor already had the perfect answer in mind. “I’d like to act in a commercial with The Shilla Duty Free, with all of us wearing suits. It would be just like a movie!”

#5 When they didn’t forget to give Doojoon a shoutout

Happy 9th anniversary 🖤

A post shared by HIGHLIGHT (@bigbadboii) on

It looks like we weren’t the only ones missing Doojoon, who was absent at the media conference due to army obligations. We spotted Junhyung shyly raising his hands when the emcee asked if anybody misses the leader (awwww). The rest of the members also made sure to reassure fans that they’ve been constantly keeping in touch with their leader. Yoseob added, “We’re not in a situation where we can communicate both ways so we can’t keep in touch often, but we always send him a lot of letters.” We sure hope Doojoon’s doing well in the military!
