Are you ready to head back to the mysterious town in Indiana? After an exhilarating second season where the gang nearly met their end at the hands of the Upside Down inhabitants, the new installment takes us back to Hawkins in 1985 where we see familiar faces and new characters take in a seemingly stress-free summer… until chaos ensues, as seen in the new trailer. For those who are already feeling overwhelmed from the non-stop action, we’ve combed through the three-minute video to bring you a list of details that you might have missed.

#1 When in doubt, use the Farah Fawcett hairspray

If you’re a Stranger Things fan like we are, you’d definitely remember one of the most adorable moments of season two when Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) revealed his haircare secret involving the Farah Fawcett branded hairspray to Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo). Having apparently taken the advice to heart, we see Dustin armed with a bottle of the exact hairspray, which he uses as his default weapon while investigating a strange occurrence in his home.

#2 Build your own radio tower

Though it may not seem important, the construction of the antenna-like tower could actually be used to create a town network that would amplify the signal of the group’s walkie-talkies for better communication over longer distances. Likewise, it may also be the gang’s attempt to eavesdrop on the secretive government agency and their messages related to the Upside Down.

#3 David vs Goliath

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-03-Protest

While we’re not able to ascertain the exact cause for the angry-looking mob, it might be possible that the many townspeople are protesting the newly built Starcourt Mall and Hawkins’ new man-in-charge, Mayor Kline (Cary Elwes), who also looks likely to be one of the main villains in this new season.

#4 The bromance lives on

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-04-Handshake

Having struck an unlikely friendship in the previous season, it seems that the bromance between Steve and Dustin would only continue to grow in the upcoming season. Just how cute is their adorkable greeting?

#5 More secret shenanigans

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-05-Science-Experiment
Credit: Netflix

It’s no surprise that the little town of Hawkins is often home to weird science experiments – and the new season promises yet another mystery that involves an electrical explosion. Though it does not look like there are monsters involved, this shocking scene could mean that the Lynx Corporation are at it again. Perhaps they are looking to force their way into the Upside Down with their own man-made portal?

#6 Hello Eggos

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-06-Eggos

Remember Eleven’s obsession with Eggos? We’re given yet another nod to this iconic staple of the series when Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is seen sitting in front of her favourite snacks.

#7 Murray Bauman returns

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-07-Murray

Remember him? He’s the investigative reporter who originally investigated the mysteries surrounding the Hawkins National Laboratory and tipped Jim Hopper (David Harbour) off with regards to Eleven’s existence. As someone who apparently knows too much of the government secrets, it seems likely that his character would get in harm’s way, resulting in Jim having to rescue him before it’s too late.

#8 Eleven’s awry void experience

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-08-Eleven-Void
Credit: Netflix

We were first introduced to this mirror vision world when Eleven underwent a makeshift sensory deprivation session while trying to locate Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) in the first season. However, this dimension of hers in the new season seems to have changed for the worse – instead of being able to walk around freely, Eleven finds herself drowning and falling into the darkness.

#9 A fan favourite is back!

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-09-Erica

Despite her limited screen time in season two, fan-favourite character Erica Sinclair (Priah Ferguson) – Lucas Sinclair’s (Caleb McLaughlin) bold little sister – returns to join the gang in their new adventures. Now that the OG characters have reached their teen years, it’s possible that Erica will play a bigger role in helping them achieve certain aspects of their plan in defeating the next terror in Hawkins.

#10 Billy and his nasty-looking infection

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-10-Billy
Credit: Netflix

Though he might have been an antagonising character in season two, it appears that Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) has since moved on from bullying kids to becoming a lifeguard at a local pool where he presumably got this weird-looking wound. We all know how Hawkins is not your average kind of town – could this be a foreshadowing into Billy mutating into a creature from the Upside Down?

#11 Poor Steve gets tortured

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-11-Steve

Blink and you just might miss poor Steve undergoing yet another horrific experience. Apart from having sustained serious facial injuries, he also gets injected in the neck with a blue serum – which we can only assume is the work of the secret government agency. Though not much is revealed, it’s safe to assume that this scene would fall into place in the season finale which might mean an unfortunate end to this beloved character.

#12 Is that you, Mind Flayer?

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-12-Mind-Flayer
Credit: Netflix

Aside from Eleven standing on a beach facing an ominous looking sky, it is important to take note of the flashes of red lightning behind the clouds which hint at the possible return of the Mind Flayer.

#13 A new monster makes its debut

The-Upside-Down-Awaits-13-Monster
Credit: Netflix

Known for churning out the Demogorgon in season one and the somewhat adorable Dart in season two, the Upside Down doesn’t disappoint as they reveal what could be their most menacing-looking monster yet. Although there’s no way of guessing just exactly what this monster is like, it does seem to have a multitude of limbs and a mouth full of sharp teeth, which we think is gruesome enough…

Let’s be honest: almost all of us are guilty of having the fear of missing out (otherwise known as the social media-fuelled phenomenon that is FOMO). Despite our hectic lives, we often try to squeeze as much as we can into our schedules to ensure that we don’t miss out on important events around us. So if given the opportunity, would you be able to stay wide awake for 60 hours to maximise your fun? The stars of Viu’s No Sleep No FOMO decided to take on the challenge!

An all-new Viu Original travel show hosted by Singapore’s very own Paul Foster, No Sleep No FOMO features some of the hottest Hallyu stars, regional influencers as well as local personalities as they go on episodic adventures in different cities where they have to compete against one another to complete a list of 60 FOMO missions within 60 hours – with absolutely no sleep.

At the media launch party ahead of the premiere, we caught up with Paul Foster, Eric Nam, Hana Tam, Benjamin Kheng, Alexander Lee Eusebio, Nat Ho and Laureen Uy to find out more about their sleepless travel experiences and whether they’re still suffering from FOMO.

viu-No-Sleep-No-FOMO-01-Paul-Foster-Eric-Nam

ON WHAT THEY REALLY FELT ABOUT THE SLEEPLESS 60 HOURS

Eric Nam: I love traveling and being able to do cool things in front of a camera because it allows us access to things that we typically wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. But it was hard. I think you start questioning your sanity when you’re not even halfway through the 60 hours. They actually keep us awake for longer than 60 hours before we start shooting so it was really tough.

Paul Foster: It was really an intense, full-on challenge. But I was very lucky that I had amazing co-hosts to join me. Because we had a great partnership across all the episodes with the right personalities, we were able to do the missions together without thinking about sleep all that often.

ON ERIC NAM’S NERVE-WRECKING STAND-UP ROUTINE

Paul Foster: That was one of the toughest missions in the whole season because [Eric] was told to go up in front of a packed comedy club full of paying customers. Sense of humour and jokes are subjective, but he was truly awesome.

Eric Nam: I had like a panic attack before I went on stage. But it was quite an experience because the routine was kind of about my mother and how much of Asian mom she is. I love her to death, but she just disapproves of everything I’ve done with my career. For example, she’d point out the sexy dance moves during my performances and she’d go, ‘God is watching!’ (laughs) I love you mom, you’re the best!

ON THEIR BIGGEST FOMO

Paul Foster: Sleep (laughs).

Eric Nam: I think for me, it’s just normalcy in life. When I first started out with my career, the biggest fear for me was missing out on times with my friends who are back in the States. I would see everybody hanging out, traveling together and getting married while I was in Korea all by myself. But I’ve come to terms with it and believe that the grass is always greener. Whatever you have or whatever you do, somebody else in the world is going to be envious of you. More than FOMO; it’s like if you want it, just do it.

viu-No-Sleep-No-FOMO-02-Hana-Tam-Xander

ON INITIAL EXPECTATIONS ABOUT THEIR TIME ON THE SHOW

Hana Tam: I didn’t really have any expectations before I joined the show. I was just really scared because I love to sleep; I can’t live without sleeping. In fact, I think I went 72 hours without sleep if I counted the sleepless hours before I made the trip to Bali.

Alexander Lee Eusebio: I was really scared too but I consulted Kevin Woo (fellow cast member and former bandmate) before I left. I asked him about the reality of the 60 hours and he was like ‘yeah, it’s gonna be a brutal 60 hours with absolutely no sleep’. So I tried to prepare as best as I could but it was still not enough. But if I was asked to do the show again, I would know exactly what to bring now!

ON THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH FEARFUL CHALLENGES

Hana Tam: I’m afraid of heights and neither can I swim. Aside from Paul’s encouraging words, I saw a sign that said ‘If you never try, you’ll never know’ when I was in Bali. Seeing it kind of motivated me to overcome and work through my fears to complete the challenge.

Alexander Lee Eusebio: Trying an activity that I was scared of really changed me. I felt like I finally did something that made me push my limits further, so now I know I’m more daring and willing to try something out of my comfort zone in the future.

ON WHICH COUNTRY THEY WOULD TRADE FOR

Alexander Lee Eusebio: I’d want Switzerland since I haven’t been there before, and I’d love to visit the alps because they said it’s very scenic. Oh, and there’s also the real Swiss chocolate!

Hana Tam: I would choose Switzerland too because I’ve not visited it either. And the best thing about the country is that it’s really cold so if I don’t sweat, I won’t have to bring so much clothing!

viu-No-Sleep-No-FOMO-03-Benjamin-Kheng-Laureen-Uy-Nat-Ho

ON THEIR HARDEST MISSION

Nat Ho: The abandoned amusement park in South Korea. Normally, I’m quite competitive and usually game for a lot of things, but the location was really creepy and the weather was so unusually cold that all I could think about was getting back into the van. To make matters worse, we had to take selfies for the challenge and we couldn’t do it with gloves on so it was terrible.

Laureen Uy: For me, it was the first challenge in South Korea where we had to take photos with different characters. We only had like 10 to 15 minutes to do everything and I was having the hardest time running around with my backpack. Not to mention that it was also very cold. I ended up getting lost somewhere and lost the challenge because I didn’t make it back in time for the cut.

Benjamin Kheng: We had a lot of really crazy physical challenges in Switzerland, but the toughest was our final mission where we had to go from adjacent carriages and meet in the centre coach carriage full of tired Swiss passengers. We basically had to dance inside the carriage and crawl around to locate a water bottle. We both ended up giving up after 15 minutes because it was just too embarrassing!

ON WHAT THEIR 60-HOUR SCHEDULE ENTAILS

Nat Ho: It was pretty full-on. If we were not outside doing an activity, then we were on the bus getting to the next location. Besides, who needs a tour package when you can do 60 FOMO activities?

Laureen Uy: There were also those little challenges in between that we had to do as well. For example, Paul and Nat built a snowman, but I didn’t; they did it when I was dressing up! And honestly, I’ve been to Korea plenty of times before, but I’ve never actually done that much during a trip so it was a really good experience.

Benjamin Kheng: The thing is, they [production team] don’t exactly tell you when you can do these missions. Even while you’re doing some big subject missions, you’ll also find yourself doing other missions in between. Because you’re in charge of the point system, the challenges are really up to you. And for some reason, Paul is always winning.

ON PLANNING A SLEEPLESS 60 HOUR ITINERARY FOR A FAN

Laureen Uy: I would plan for a fan to try all the activities I did on the show!

Nat Ho: Because I’m a foodie, it will definitely be food-related. And if the destination is in Singapore, I’ll also add in reverse bungee as an activity that they should try.

Benjamin Kheng: I’ll make them jump off cliffs (laughs). Just kidding! I would plan something in Singapore, but I will not torture them under the sun. I will bring them to air-conditioned places.

It is said that there’s always more than meets the eye and this phrase couldn’t be more apt for the entertainment industry in Korea. While there are great moments to experience in being a K-pop idol, there are also dark times that come with the price of fame. From an all-out witch hunt to closed-door abuse and seedy engagements behind-the-scenes, here are some of the most shocking celebrity scandals that have happened in the history of Korean pop.

#1 Epik High’s Tablo

so-scandalous-01-tablo

Dan Lee, known most commonly by his moniker Tablo, experienced a damaging smear campaign when a group of Internet users banded together in an online forum called TaJinYo to attack the authenticity of his Stanford education back in May 2010. The intention behind the deep-dive investigation into his education was a result of the seemingly questionable duration of his years at the prestigious university, where he took only three and a half years to graduate with both a bachelors and a master’s degree.

As if the scrutiny into his personal life wasn’t enough, members of TaJinYo began digging up information about Tablo’s family to fit their narrative and implicate his entire family into being complicit liars about each member’s achievements over the years. With no countermeasure from his management, the personal attacks badly affected his family and resulted in Tablo agreeing for a camera crew to follow him back to the Stanford University’s registrar office where he had his diploma, transcript and credentials cross-checked with the official school records.

This last ditch effort became a two-part special on MBC, which vindicated him and cleared him of the false accusations. The rapper subsequently filed a suit against 20 of the online forum members which became a legal battle that lasted for two years, and eventually saw eight of the TaJinYo participants sentenced to prison for breaking digital network related laws.

#2 Kim Hyun Joong

so-scandalous-02-kim-hyun-joong

The controversy started back in August 2014 when reports surfaced of assault charges filed against Kim Hyun Joong by his then-girlfriend, detailing an account of an abusive relationship with startling evidence to back up her claims. While the Internet went into a frenzy over who to believe, an official statement was released by his agency admitting to the pair’s relationship with a clarification that the incident was an unintentional one-time occurrence due to a verbal argument. They even addressed the cause of her broken ribs, which they claimed was an accident when the couple was merely joking around.

The woman in question decided to drop all charges against Kim Hyun Joong if he apologised and admitted to his mistakes. The singer obliged and all the charges were dropped, though he was still given a fine of five million KRW. While everyone may have thought that it was the last they’d hear of this, a report in the news brought both parties back to the spotlight when his former flame claimed that she was 10 weeks pregnant with his child. Although he was ready to accept his responsibilities after a positive paternity test, he found himself embroiled in an exhausting legal dispute over her alleged miscarriages.

His ex-girlfriend was ultimately found guilty of fraud and defamation as evidence had proven that she had tampered with the supposed text messages, and manipulated photos of pregnancy tests which she had submitted as evidence in support of her self-made claims.

#3 Baek Ji Young

so-scandalous-03-baek-ji-young

Before she became a successful veteran in the industry, Baek Ji Young was a victim of a sensationalised sex tape scandal that nearly ruined her career. It all started in the peak of her debut when an explicit video of her and her former manager surfaced on an online pay-per-view porn site. The immediate effect it had resulted in radio stations pulling out her tracks from their playlists as well as television stations cancelling her upcoming appearances. Contrary to the expected behaviour of controversial female artistes of her time, the songstress held a press conference where she stated that she had been filmed without her knowledge. She went on to denounce the actions of her former manager as she took a firm stance to prevent other women from becoming victims like her.

While the public was left to digest her statement, her then-manager Kim Si Won corroborated her claims in a live phone call to an entertainment program where he also confirmed the authenticity of the footage. Unfortunately for Baek Ji Young, the verbal confirmation led to the video becoming highly sought after, and in a matter of days, the footage was posted to private home pages and shareware sites for easy download. Despite this setback that caused her to take a five-year break from the limelight, the ballad queen still bravely fought to stay on in showbiz, while the man who almost ruined her career fled to the US where he is currently serving time for statutory rape charges committed during his stay in the land of the free.

#4 JYJ’s Park Yoo Chun

so-scandalous-04-park-yoochun

In 2016, JYJ member Park Yoo Chun found himself the subject of shocking rape allegations when four women filed complaints against him, accusing him of sexually assaulting them in a bathroom setting. As the police was only able to ascertain that sexual activity did take place between Yoochun and his accusers, they were not able to determine if force or intimidation took place to consider the rape charge. While the police continued with their investigation, the media frenzy continued with reports that detailed his alleged mode of operation, as well as his troubling behaviour from the past.

Despite the thorough investigative process, the police failed to find any other evidence pertaining to the allegations made against the idol. As such, Park Yoo Chun was acquitted of all the sexual assault charges that had been brought up against him. It was reported that out of the four charges brought against him, only one charge was deemed relevant to the case while the other three did not have enough evidence to be made into a case and proven false. Even though he has since cleared his name, he was still charged with soliciting prostitution and fraud as he had promised money in exchange for sex.

In return for the grief they put him through, the singer-actor countersued his first two accusers of blackmail and false accusations. The court proceedings concluded with a dismissal of charges for one accuser, while the other was found guilty and sentenced to prison along with her two accomplices. Two years after the scandal, Park Yoo Chun is now reportedly facing a civil lawsuit from his second accuser, who had held off filing her lawsuit in the hopes of an earnest apology – which she did not get.

#5 Yoo Seung Jun

so-scandalous-05-yoo-seung-jun

2002 saw the almost immediate downfall of Yoo Seung Jun, one of South Korea’s best-selling K-pop artistes from the late 90s. The singer had enjoyed a rather successful career and popularity among fans before he made the fatal decision to renounce his Korean citizenship to become a naturalised American citizen. Despite his impending enlistment, he headed straight to America following his concert in Japan to allegedly obtain his US citizenship. He claimed that the decision was made with the intention to further his career while using the opportunity to bid his family farewell before serving.

Unfortunately for him, domestic fans were not convinced by his claims as the news broke around the time he was drafted. His actions became a widespread controversy that angered many Koreans who felt he had turned his back on an essential aspect of the Korean culture as all male citizens aged between 18 to 35 years old, regardless of their status, are supposed to complete their mandatory military service.

For the next 13 years, the former K-pop singer sought opportunities in China and made no attempt to disclose any information behind his military no-show. This only proved to convince Koreans that he had intended to evade his military obligations. In 2015, a tearful Yoo Seung Jun appeared in a video where he tried to explain his actions and beg for a chance to return to Korea. However, Koreans remain hardened about their perception of the once-beloved singer, with the Ministry of Justice stating that there was never any intention to lift the ban or reinstate his Korean citizenship.

Even with the failed first attempt, the singer tried to apply for an entry visa again the following year, only to have it denied by the Korean Consulate General in Los Angeles. It was reported that this was his second and final appeal to lift the entry ban, and since he was unsuccessful in doing so, the entertainer is no longer able to return to his birth country for good.

#6 S#arp

so-scandalous-06-sharp

If there is one major scandal that everyone should know about, it should be of S#arp; the first generation K-pop co-ed group made up of two male and two female members. Their idol dreams were realised by group member Seo Ji Young’s influential family, where her father spent quite a fortune to set up the entertainment company in 1998 to spearhead his daughter’s debut.

The group had initially started out with five members and had done exceptionally well under the careful guidance of Roo’Ra’s Lee Sang Min. However, as the quintet reached their peak, two members left which resulted in the company recruiting a fourth member, Lee Ji Hye, who took on the role of a main vocalist. The sudden inclusion and importance of the newest member made Seo Ji Young jealous, which began her onslaught of relentless bully and torture.

Throughout her years as part of the fairly popular group, Lee Ji Hye had endured both physical and verbally abuse by Seo Ji Young and the people around her. She had never once fought back, until the fateful day at a KBS radio show where she retaliated with a shove after receiving an insult from Seo Ji Young. Due to the intense tension and inability for the twosome to work together, the company was forced to disband the quartet. At a press conference following the announcement, Seo Ji Young had allegedly paid the group’s manager to lie on her behalf so as to pin majority of the group’s issues on Lee Ji Hye. But instead of painting Seo Ji Young as the victim she wasn’t, the manager decided to reveal the truth to the media.

Though the members have since parted ways, it was reported that Seo Ji Young continued to find ways to antagonise Lee Ji Hye, even visiting her at the hospital with a bouquet of flowers for the dead. The group eventually met up 11 years after their disbandment to clear up any misunderstandings and were thankfully able to reconcile, putting an end to the S#arp debacle once and for all.

#7 Open World Entertainment

so-scandalous-07-open-world-entertainment

News of Open World Entertainment CEO Jang Seok Woo’s heinous acts first broke in early 2012 when he was arrested on multiple charges of sex crimes committed against his female artistes and trainees, which included sexual harassment, assault and rape. Based on CCTV footage obtained by the police, it was reported that the crimes took place within the confines of the company’s building on the fifth floor and the rehearsal studio in the basement.

In a matter of days, the number of first-hand accounts and news reports helped to shed light on the seedy underbelly of the company’s hidden operations. Not only did the former CEO use his power and influence to abuse the people that trusted him with their careers, he was also using his position to coerce male idols into committing the same crime.

The case has since concluded with no charges made against the male idols (due to the inability to prove the allegations), while the main perpetrator Jang Seok Wook was sentenced to six years in prison for the sexual assault of his former agency’s trainees, which included two minors and one who wasn’t an official trainee at the company.

#8 G.NA

so-scandalous-08-gna

Back in 2016, the Korean entertainment industry was caught up in an alarming illegal prostitution scandal that reportedly involved sponsors and female celebrities. When news broke of an arrest made alongside the reports of four notable female artistes who had been charged, netizens were quick to speculate that former CUBE Entertainment singer Gina Choi (better known as her moniker G.NA) was somehow a part of that list. Their suspicions were indirectly confirmed later when Ilgan Sports conducted a seemingly anonymous interview that dropped hints pertaining to her real identity.

Despite admitting to the charges of prostitution, G.NA denied knowingly getting involved as she believed she had been tricked into committing the crime. As opposed to the public’s belief that she had received the money as part of a sex transaction, the songstress said that it was given to her as a loan from a friend who later told her that she didn’t need to return the money. Instead, she just needed to do him a favour by meeting with a big fan as if they were on a blind date.

While she had thought that what transpired later between her and the supposed fan was a natural progression in their relationship, she realised that it had all been a pre-arranged meeting set up by her so-called friend, and that the money she had assumed was a loan was really his payment for sexual favours. As a result of this unfortunate turn of events, G.NA was found guilty of prostitution and was fined two million KRW. Since then, she has been staying out of the limelight, only posting twice on her Instagram page in the last two years.

#9 TheEastLight

so-scandalous-09-theeastlight

In late 2018, Korean news outlet XSportNews released a breaking coverage that brought to light the three-year long abuse that rookie boy group TheEastLight had suffered at the hands of Media Line Entertainment CEO Kim Chang Hwan and producer Moon Young Il – which included being beaten with a bat and getting strangled by guitar strings. Despite an official statement from the agency that refuted the claims, a press conference was held by TheEastLight’s leader Lee Seok Cheol, who openly recounted the traumatic abuse that he and his brother (and fellow member) Lee Seung Hyun had experienced since March 2015. Due to the negative attention and pressure the agency faced, a decision was made to terminate the contracts of the remaining members of TheEastLight.

Instead of banding together, the following months saw the case take an ugly turn when the agency and two members of the former boy group held a press conference in an effort to discredit the brothers. In spite of the irrefutable evidence presented alongside the recent indictment of the abusive producer, the four tried to paint a different picture of the whole fiasco, seemingly shifting the blame onto the brothers.

Fortunately, the Lee brothers soldiered on in their pursuit of justice which finally saw the agency’s former CEO and president indicted on related child abuse charges. As of now, their former producer has already pleaded guilty on all charges during his first trial on 4 March 2019, but the ordeal continues for the brothers who are due to appear as witnesses for the next trial on 19 April, which involves the two key figures of their former management.

#10 Seungri, Jung Joon Young and FTISLAND’s Choi Jong Hoon

so-scandalous-10-seungri-jjy-cjh

Apart from being the first K-pop scandal of 2019, this is by far one of the biggest controversies to ever hit the Korean entertainment industry in years. Since the infamous assault case at Burning Sun (the night club that started it all), fans of the K-world have been hit with numerous shocking reports that have quickly unravelled the dark truths of showbiz. From the first big expose by news outlet SBS funE which reported BIGBANG Seungri’s alleged involvement with soliciting prostitutes for his would-be investors in 2015, to the larger-scaled allegations of the K-pop idol’s appalling group chat with other male celebrities that shared hidden camera footage of women, it always seems as if there is more to be revealed the next day.

The intense scrutiny of this case has since led to the release of more text messages which got netizens speculating the identity of the other male celebrities involved. Subsequent updates and investigation eventually revealed them to be actor Jung Joon Young and FTISLAND member, Choi Jong Hoon; who, alongside Seungri, have all announced their retirement from the industry. Though investigations are still ongoing, it has been reported that arrest warrants may soon be issued for two non-celebrities involved as well as Jung Joon Young, who could receive a prison sentence of up to seven years and six months if found guilty.
