Interview: Brit Band The Vamps Dish On Tour Life And New Album

12 Aug 2019 by Chew Hui Ling

A lot has happened since the Brit lads of The Vamps last performed in Singapore back in 2015. Besides churning out new chart-toppers such as their latest hit ‘All Night’, the pop-rock quartet has also been busy hitting the road for back-to-back tours around the world. This time round, they are bringing their biggest tour yet – aptly named the Four Corners 2019 Tour – to all corners of the world. Their next stop? Singapore.

Ahead of their show on 15 August, we caught up with the boys for a short chat on their touring experience thus far and what to expect at their upcoming set.

Hi guys! It has been a good four years since you’ve last performed in Singapore, what are you looking forward to in your next visit?

Bradley: It’s been a while! We’re so excited to be coming back here after all this time. We have such great memories from the last show and we can’t wait to be reunited with all of you. It’s actually Tris’ birthday when we’re in Singapore so we need ideas of what we can do to celebrate. Give us some recommendations!

(You know what to do, Vampettes!)

So how do you guys usually unwind after finishing a show?

Connor: Nothing too crazy, though! We play lots of FIFA, eat lots of pizza… things like that (laughs).

Besides your own tour, you’ve also supported various acts such as Taylor Swift, The Wanted and Little Mix. How was it like touring with them?

Connor: Yeah, we’ve been really lucky. We’ve supported some amazing people and we’ve also had some great artists on tour with us. It’s fun having other people around; you’re like one big family when you’re on tour so it’s a great bonding experience.

And now, you guys have New Hope Club and HRVY as your supporting acts! How does it feel like to make the transition from tour opener to being the headliner of your very own tour?

Bradley: It’s incredible to think of the journey we’ve been on over the last few years. Not only have we massively developed as artistes, musicians and songwriters, but we’ve also grown up a lot in that time. To be able to say that we were the first band to ever headline the O2 arena in London five years in a row, is insane. It’s all thanks to our fans really; they’ve been on the journey with us and supported us all the way.

You did a total of four tours in support of the Night & Day album. How is each tour different from the other?

Tristan: All of our tours are different. We’re always thinking of ways we can make them exciting, whether it’s through using screens, pyrotechnics, the set list, special guests or the location. For the Four Corners Tour, we wanted to try and visit as many places in the world as possible – those places that we haven’t been to before. Especially Singapore, since we haven’t visited in a long time. It’s great that we’re able to do that!

If you could go to all four corners of the earth with only one other member of The Vamps, who would you pick and why?

Tristan: You can’t ask us that! (Laughs) I wouldn’t be able to choose.

The Day Edition is released last year. Can we expect a new album coming out soon?

Bradley: We’re actually writing a lot at the moment; working on new tracks that we will hopefully share in 2020. We want to go back to our roots, creating upbeat music that people can dance and have fun to!

Lastly, what can fans look forward to at your upcoming concert in Singapore?

Tristan: We’ve released a lot of new music since we were last here so we’re really looking forward to sharing that with you all. And there will be some surprises as well…

Thanks to CK Star Entertainment for the interview opportunity!

Hear that, Vampettes? If you haven’t gotten your tickets to catch The Vamps at their show on 15 August, they’re still up for grabs on SISTIC – grab ’em before it’s gone!

Okay, it’s safe to say that the Twitter folks are collectively losing their minds for one reason: Kang Daniel and TWICE’s Jihyo are officially an item!

Earlier this morning, Korean media outlet Dispatch broke the news that the two K-pop stars were last seen on a date in the neighbourhood of Hannam-dong on 1 August and had reportedly began dating at the start of the year. Following the exclusive report, reps from both agencies, JYP Entertainment and KONNECT Entertainment, have since confirmed the news. And fans have taken to stan Twitter to react to the budding romance – here are some of the best ones we’ve dug out.

The ship has sailed, y’all.

So, uhh, has anyone thought of an OTP name for Daniel and Jihyo yet? Here’s a vote from us for NielHyo!

There are a few broken hearts…

Well, you can’t blame the fans for being a lil’ salty though – where else can you find a girlfriend who would personally knit a scarf for you? Jihyo’s a keeper!

But the biggest victim of all?

… is NCT’s Mark, who is known for having a small boy crush on the ex Wanna One member after making a cameo on the variety show It’s Dangerous Beyond The Blankets starring Daniel. Concerned about his ‘broken heart’, fans went on to start the #staystrongmark hashtag – which became one of the top trending topics on Twitter alongside the search terms of ‘Jihyo’ and ‘Kang Daniel’.

Meanwhile, CEO Kang stays unbothered.

In case you didn’t know, Daniel is the CEO of his own agency, KONNECT Entertainment, which he set up earlier in the year. Cue all the hilarious memes.

Yep, this was definitely what went down in the KONNECT HQ.

Regardless of the comments, we’ve got to say that Daniel and Jihyo is arguably the most magical thing to ever happen in the K-idol world. Wanna One’s centre and TWICE’s leader? We stan a powerful couple.

Once again, huge congratulations to the two lovebirds!

If there’s any artiste that truly deserves a headliner status, it’s Halsey.

2019 has been quite a juggernaut year for the pop songstress, which saw her releasing not just one, but three record-breaking singles ahead of her third studio album. When she’s not hitting the studios to work on new tunes, the multi-platinum darling can be found lending her sultry vocals to various collaborations – from a kickass remix of her 2018 hit ‘Without Me’ featuring Juice WRLD, to teaming up with the biggest K-pop boy band in the world for ‘Boy With Luv’. And she’s definitely on a roll, with an upcoming headlining slot announced for none other than our very own Neon Lights Festival.

Neon Lights Festival Halsey 2019 Singapore

Taking place across two days on 23 and 24 November, Halsey will join Mumford & Sonds and Honne as the Sunday headliner at the premier outdoor music and arts fest. The ‘Nightmare’ singer is set to take main-stage honours on the second day with a spectacular audio-visual show, complete with a full live band to accompany her stunning discography.

This sees our OG queen of badlands making her majestic return to our shores, after a successful debut concert here as part of the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom tour last August. It’s also her only stop in Southeast Asia, so you wouldn’t want to miss this one-night-only performance. Fans can look forward to an electrifying set peppered with fan-favourites and new bangers off her upcoming record – and who knows, you might just be treated to a sneak peek of what’s to come!

Neon Lights Aurora

Playing on the same day as Halsey is electropop singer-songwriter Aurora, who had previously made her Singapore debut at Laneway Festival 2017. Back with a new catalog of releases under her belt, the ‘Queendom’ songstress is all set to enthral with her mesmerising voice and enigmatic personality.

More music acts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks and months. Watch this space for updates!

Early bird single-day tickets for 24 November will go on sale at $108 from 2 August, 9am at www.neonlights.sg and SISTIC. Standard single-day tier 2 tickets are priced at $128. Fans who have already bought the single-day tickets for 23 November will have the option to add-on for a two-day pass.

If you’ve been a fan of NEX7 (乐华七子) since their Idol Producer days, you’d have known that the seven-member group is on an unfathomable level of extra thanks to their meme-worthy antics. And it’s heartening to see that nothing much has really changed about them despite finding fame as one of the most popular boy bands in China – they’re still the same chaotic Yuehua sprouts that we know and love.

We had the opportunity to snag a quick sit-down sesh with two-seventh of NEX7, Justin Huang and Huang Xinchun, who were recently in town to attend the grand opening of the new Skechers store at Jewel Changi Airport.

In between a press conference, media interviews and a store opening where droves of fans awaited, they hardly had any time to catch a breather since their arrival. In spite of their packed schedule, the duo never once showed any signs of fatigue as they playfully bantered their way through our questions.

Oh, and they certainly didn’t forget about their ambassador duties. Read on for some of the hilarious TMI (too-much-information, but not that we mind!) bits we found out.

#1 Both of them are avid shoe collectors

One word to describe their massive shoe collection back at the dorms? “Uncountable.” So much so that the NEXT7 members would often end up wearing the wrong pair of shoes when they’re in a rush – how relatable is that?

#2 Justin doesn’t receive maknae treatment in the group

Despite being the youngest one in the group, Justin revealed that he doesn’t receive special attention from the other members. “I like it that way. I’m not the type that likes to be taken care of by others,” the 17-year-old explained, adding on that everyone gets along well just like a family. Xinchun continued, “Justin may be young, but he’s mature for his age.”

#3 Their plans after turning 21…

Having turned 21 recently, Xinchun released a track titled ’21’ in commemoration of his coming-of-age – so we couldn’t help but wonder what are the top three things on his bucket list now that he’s officially an adult. “I hope to be able to write and produce my own song. That’s a huge goal of mine this year,” he said. “I also want to visit my parents back home, and of course, wear Skechers every single day.”

Although Justin still has around four years to go before hitting 21, it seems that he’s already given it some thought – and his answer certainly didn’t disappoint. He replied with a sheepish grin, “I want to be able to see Xinchun and wear Skechers with him every day. (Laughs) I’d also like to go home and see my family.”

#4 Their bromance is on a whole new level

One glimpse at the pair and you can tell that these two are super chummy with each other. Particularly Justin, who wasn’t afraid to show his admiration for the older member throughout the entire interview.

When asked about the member they’d like to switch bodies with, the chap spared no hesitation in choosing his fellow partner in crime (while a cheeky Xinchun agreed that he, too, would also swap with himself). In another hypothetical question where we got them to select a famous person they’d like to become, Justin – yep, you guessed it – picked Xinchun in a heartbeat. He gushed, “This is a tough question, but I think I want to be Huang Xinchun. He’s a famous artiste under Yuehua Entertainment. I really want to be like him one day because he’s so handsome, nice and awesome!”

We get it, Justin, we get it.

#5 So is their love for Skechers

As much as they adore each other, Justin and Xinchun also made sure not to neglect the brand they’re endorsing for – after all, that was the reason why they were here. Proving themselves to be the best ambassadors ever, the dedicated duo had us in stitches over their shameless attempts at plugging Skechers with every opportunity they get. Case in point:

Q1: If you’re stranded on an island and could only bring one member with you, who would you bring?

Justin: Why would I bring one of my members? I would bring a pair of Skechers shoes because they’re really comfortable and walking on the sandy beaches while wearing them would feel amazing.

Xinchun: Thanks to Skechers, we have the willpower to survive on the island.

Q2: Besides the NEX7 members, do you guys have any other close friends in the industry?

Justin: We have a very close relationship with Skechers. We’ve been wearing Skechers from the time when we weren’t famous yet, up until today.

Xinchun: We’re fated to be together.

Well, it’s still a better love story than Twilight.

Want to see more of Justin and Xinchun? Be sure to check out the new Skechers store at Jewel Changi Airport, where you can snap a picture with your favourite NEX7 members at the exclusive photo zone while getting your shopping done!

Skechers Jewel is located at Jewel Changi Airport #02-201.

The sextet made their sophomore return to our sunny island as part of their Go Go GFRIEND Asia Tour in a colourful, high energy-powered performance that was well worth the wait.

GFRIEND Singapore

Despite the tight security which would have made for an otherwise uncomfortable experience, the six sweethearts of K-pop girl group GFRIEND more than made up for it with their charming personalities, hilarious antics and energetic performances. Accompanied by a setlist of crowd favourites, special stages and some spontaneous surprises, here are five of the best moments we’ve experienced at their three-hour long show that made us yearn for more.

#1 When the girls broke into sub-units

Much like all K-pop concerts, it’s not unusual to find a segment within the show that specially showcases a side of an idol that fans may have never seen before. Splitting into two sub-units named World Peace (SinB, Sowon, Yuju) and Hug-Hug (Yerin, Eunha, Umji), GFRIEND proceeded to perform their would-be debut songs in two varying genres that were simply a visual and audio delight.

#2 When GFRIEND showed off their vocal prowess

Probably the highlight for most fans was the breathtaking ballad version of ‘Rough’. Trading in their trademark upbeat vibes, the girls settled for a more subtle performance that showcased each of their vocal quality and strength.

#3 When they dedicated a song for fans

As if GFRIEND wasn’t already treating their Buddies to an amazing three-hour show, they had a special gift prepared for fans in a form of a live performance of the sixth track in their latest EP titled ‘Hope’. Though it wouldn’t have seemed much at first, a behind-the-scenes video shown to the crowd revealed that the lyrics were actually penned by none other than the girls themselves, in dedication to their dearest Buddies. Aww!

#4 When they blessed us with an acoustic version of ‘Fever’

Quite surprisingly, their latest comeback track ‘Fever’ wasn’t part of the tour setlist. As such, the members had intended to give local Buddies a special live performance of this hit song, but due to technical difficulties, they were unfortunately unable to do so. However, that didn’t stop the girls from treating fans to an impromptu short acoustic rendition, complete with dance moves!

#5 When GFRIEND and Buddies sang together

Shortly after the fan video, the girls noticed the romanised lyrics of ‘You Are Not Alone’ that was printed on the banners that fans were holding – and decided to hold an unplanned singalong session with the audience to reciprocate them for the love. How heartwarming was that?
