Handy Pokemon Go Tips You Probably Didn't Know

8 Aug 2016 by Venetia Sng

Pokemon Go just launched last Saturday and it’s already taking over our lives as we know it. We bet you know all the basics like capturing a Pokemon, collecting items at Pokestops, camping for Pokemons at stops with Lure Modules activated etc, so we won’t bore you with all these. We’re going to share with you a few tips we learnt while playing Pokemon over the weekend, yes that was what we basically did the whole weekend.

#1 When to evolve your Pokemon

Evolve Power Up Pokemon Go

So Pokemon Go is actually more complicated than you think, there are a lot of factors when it comes to powering up or evolving your Pokemon. Other than it’s Combat Power (CP), the hidden stats (IV) is one of the factors to consider as well. A Pokemon’s potential is indicated by its IVs, given at random to each individual Pokemon you catch. You can check your Pokemon’s IV by using a calculator here. After calculating, you can follow the chart above to determine if you should power up and/or evolve the Pokemon you have or choose to catch another.

#2 Gaining XP fast

If you want to level up fast, evolving your Pokemon is the way to go. Don’t ignore or transfer those Pidgeys, Caterpies, Rattatas and Weedles away! They can come in real handy when you have a Lucky Egg ’cause those babies double whatever Experience Points (XP) you earn when you activate it. For 30 minutes, catch all the Pokemon you can get your hands on and evolve whatever you can. Even better if you have an Incense to burn so more Pokemon will be attract to you.

#3 Getting Pokecoins

Pokemon Go Gym Pokecoins

Getting a spot in the gym lets you collect Pokecoins, the only currency you can use to buy items like Incense, Lure Modules, Bag Upgrade etc. You don’t have to battle to get a spot if you’re at a low level or your Pokemons’ CPs are too low. All you need to do is to wait for someone of your team (Mystic, Valor or Instinct) to take over a gym and for the gym to level up. Each level allows one more player to take up a spot in the gym, for example, there will be 8 spots to be occupied if the gym is at level 8 – so it’s fastest fingers first. No worries your team gets defeated and you got kicked out of your spot in the gym, you can only collect Pokecoins every 21 hours, so try to get a spot again the next day.

#4 Hotspots in Singapore

If you didn’t know already, gardens and downtown are generally places with tons of Pokestops and that’s where you can catch your Pokemons ’cause there will be lures everywhere. But if you want to capture a rare Pokemon, you might want to go off the beaten track and burn that Incense. Here at Teenage HQ, there are no Pokestops nearby whatsoever, it’s as barren as it can be, but we manage to spot and catch some pretty rare Pokemons like Abra, Dratini and Hitmonchan. No guarantees but no harm trying right.

Here’s a chart of the rarity of each Pokemon for your reference.
