7 New And Upcoming Shopping Malls In JB To Check Out

17 Jun 2019 by Jasmine Ong

Known as a shopping Mecca for Singaporeans, Johor Bahru has been the go-to destination for locals thanks to its close proximity and affordability. Besides our usual haunts, it seems that our causeway neighbour has been quietly expanding as they make room for new shopping and entertainment destinations. To give you a preview of what’s to come, here are some upcoming shopping malls to pencil into your future itinerary.

#1 Mid Valley Southkey

01-mid-valley-southkey

Having opened just late last month, Mid Valley Southkey is the largest integrated shopping mall in the Johor region, which was inspired by Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur. Apart from housing affordable street brands like Cotton On and Uniqlo, the mall is also home to luxury names such as Dior, Kate Spade and Chanel. Given the sheer size of the mall, plenty of dining options are also available – from Southern Fried Chicken to Thai boat noodles, you can have your pick from the delicious array of cuisines hailing from any corner of the globe!

Address: Jalan Bakar Batu, Southkey, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

#2 Toppen Shopping Centre

02-toppen

Set in Tebrau City, this gem of a mall will be opening its doors come end-2019 with four levels of shops and a rooftop space that will include up to 300 retail, dining, leisure and entertainment options. Probably sounding a little familiar to VivoCity, the rooftop space will also feature play areas as well as a community garden and sporting facilities. Plus, it’s linked to IKEA so that’s one more reason to hightail it to Toppen Shopping Centre when it opens!

Address: Taman Desa Tebrau, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

#3 Sunway Big Box Village

03-sunway-big-box-village

Probably a shopping concept we’ve never quite experienced before in Singapore, Sunway Big Box Village is touted as the first-of-its-kind retail park in Malaysia. This open-air strip mall features over 80 warehouse concept stores from quality brands alongside an X-treme Park as well as a hotel. Though there isn’t much information available yet, this interesting new project is slated to open at the end of this year.

Address: Persiaran Medini 5, Iskandar Puteri, Sunway Iskandar, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

#4 Beletime Danga Bay

04-beletime-danga-bay

If you would like a change of scenery, Beletime Danga Bay might just be what you’re looking for. Due to open end-2019, discover a whole new retail experience at this marine-themed two-storey lifestyle mall located at a seaside beach in Danga Bay. Apart from getting your groceries at the Japanese supermarket brand AEON, you might also want to take some time to enjoy the 3D cinema – which promises a fully-immersive 3D visual spectacle unlike any other.

Address: Lot PTB 22056, Danga Bay, Jalan Skudai, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

#5 Larkin Junction Mall

05-larkin-junction-mall

Strategically located within close proximity to Larkin Sentral transportation hub, the upcoming Larkin Junction Mall is set to deliver diverse experiences across all of its five levels. From fashion to dining and entertainment, you can be assured of a quality shopping experience boosted with a carefully curated mix of over 150 shops.

Address: Jalan Dewata, 80350 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

#6 Eco Galleria

06-eco-galleria

With architecture inspired by Singapore’s legendary Raffles Hotel, Eco Galleria is a combination of the timeless European shopping streets and arcades that contribute to the high-street experience. Come December 2019, this modern mall is set to offer a unique shopping, dining and entertainment in an environment that’s contemporary yet nostalgic all at once.

Address: 25, 27, 29 Jalan Eko Botani 3/5, Taman Eco Botani, 79100 Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia

#7 Mall of Medini

07-mall-of-medini

Though not entirely new, the Mall of Medini is currently undergoing a revamp and will be unveiling its brand new look along with the addition of more retail brands in September 2019. While information about the retail cluster has been kept under wraps, frequent visitors of the mall are already hopeful that they would get to see big-name brands such as H&M, Starbucks, TGV Cinemas and Chatime at the re-opening.

Address: 79100 Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia

From Honey Butter Chips to the iconic Choco Pie, it’s no surprise that Korean snacks hold a special place in our hearts. While the snacks alone are enough to make us a loyal supporter, it’s often the celebrity endorsements that motivate our trips to the mart (especially when their promotional images are being used as part of the product packaging). Though these idol-fronted brands may be more of a common sight in kimchi land, it turns out that our local Korean marts have actually been quietly stocking up on these goodies. To get you started on your quest, here’s a list of products endorsed by your favourite celebs that you can get your hands on at anytime!

#1 BTS and Coca-Cola

01-bts-coca-cola

Although the Coca-Cola campaign has been launched since last year, local ARMYs can finally pick up all seven of these limited edition BTS cans without shopping online or leaving the country. Previously available only in convenience stores and supermarkets in Korea, it seems like our very own Korean marts have come through with these fizzy delights. And if you’re not a fan but you’re curious to know who’s who, here’s a breakdown of the colour representation on the cans: RM (Pink), Jin (Blue), Suga (Mint), J-Hope (Green), Jimin (Orange), V (Purple), Jungkook (Red).

#2 Park Seo Joon and Bibigo

02-park-seo-joon-bibigo

Since making waves in the K-drama world, Park Seo Joon is no stranger to the endless advertisement opportunities before him. Apart from endorsing international brands like Laneige and Gong Cha, the charming actor is also the face of Korean food brand, Bibigo. As their spokesperson, he endorses their range of pre-packed food products with a picture of him smiling on the packaging. Not all products come with his endorsement, but the kimbap seaweed wrap is a safe bet.

#3 BTS and Cold Brew by Babinski

03-bts-babinski

While most of us might not be familiar with Babinski, we might soon be acquainted after purchasing a bottle of their fragrant cold coffee. Widely popular in South Korea, the coffee brand is created by HY Fresh in collaboration with 2015 US Barista Champion, Charles Babinski. Unlike their competitors, the unique selling point of the coffee comes from the diligent mention of the actual brew dates on the packaging, which ensures consumers receive the freshest coffee possible.

Back in August 2018, the brand partnered with BTS to feature all seven members on their bottle packaging in a special Art Nouveau design series, which emphasised the romantic and artistic style of the group. While only the Americano flavour is available in Singapore for now, that shouldn’t be too much of a dealbreaker if you can have this gorgeous collectible to keep once you finish your drink.

#4 Nam Joo Hyuk and Nongshim Shrimp Cracker

04-nam-joo-hyuk-shrimp-cracker

Known as the original shrimp flavoured snack, this light puffy snack was first produced by Nongshim back in 1971, and is now considered one of the most popular snacks in Korea. As if it isn’t already marketable on its own, the brand has engaged Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo’s Nam Joo Hyuk to endorse the product, which is now available in more variety of flavours including spicy shrimp!

#5 IU and Lotte Mongshell Cakes

iu-mongshell-1

A popular snack that is similar to the famous Chocopie, Mongshell is filled with cream in place of the marshmallow found at the centre of the cake. As a huge fan of the product and having a sweet tooth herself, it’s no wonder IU jumped at the chance at being a part of the marketing campaign. Apart from starring in the various advertisements, the singer-actress had also lent her vocals for a special track related to the product that is aptly named the ‘Mongshell Song’.

#6 Gong Yoo and Maxim Kanu Coffee

06-gong-yoo-kanu-coffee

Gong Yoo’s longstanding partnership with Maxim began when they first selected him in hopes of tapping onto his well-received appeal as an actor. With Gong Yoo as the face of their product, they believed that it would help in enhancing the product’s overall image as a sophisticated coffee mix. And boy, did it work like a charm – Kanu Coffee has become one of the most sought-after instant coffee brands in Korea, offering up special seasonal blends and even iced coffee in its selections!

#7 Wanna One and Vita500

07-wanna-one-vita-500

Widely popular in Korea as the market’s leading energy boosting drink, Vita500 provides just the right amount of vitamin C for your body to help get you through the day. In celebration of its 18th anniversary, the brand collaborated with Wanna One for a promotional campaign which saw the release of 11 different bottles for each member. While the group may have disbanded in January, you can still get your Wanna One (and vitamin C) fix with these thirst-quenching keepsakes!

#8 Lee Seung Gi and Noble Coffee

08-lee-seung-gi-noble-coffee

Unlike other coffee brands on the market, Noble Coffee prides itself as a premium health coffee brand that contains coffee polyphenols extracted from green coffee beans, which is known as an ingredient that’s beneficial in improving skin properties and micro circulatory functions. Perhaps that was the reason why Lee Seung Gi was chosen to endorse the brand. Not only is he multi-talented, the actor is also dubbed as the Nation’s ‘Um Chin-dal’ (mother’s friend’s son) – which gives the beverage brand a wholesome, healthy image that will appeal to the masses.

Kafe UTU

Address: 12 Jiak Chuan Road, Singapore 089265
Opening hours: 8am – 5pm (Wed to Mon)

Take a sip on the wild side with Kafe UTU, Singapore’s first cafe concept inspired by Africa. The menu is a celebration of its colourful culture; the flavours are just as exciting. On the drinks front, the UTU Ink ($6) is a safe bet. This cold brew uses Ugandan beans for a rich, chocolatey flavour while delivering a jolt of caffeine. Other kahawa (coffee in Swahili) options include the mocha variation of Bidibado ($6); and the Ibada ‘Ritual’ ($6), a quad ristretto shot over Hokkaido milk. If time permits, come back for lunch and sample exotic dishes like Swahili Fish Curry ($29) and Liberian Peanut Chicken Stew ($28).

Maxi Coffee Bar

Address: 31 Club Street #01-02, Singapore 069468
Opening hours: 8am – 5pm (Mon to Fri)

It might be hard to locate Maxi Coffee Bar, but those who do will be treated to a warm space, friendly faces, and a humble menu. For something different, get the Iced Cereal Milk Latte ($7.50) which is almost like a grown-up’s breakfast in a cup. The taste is layered: sweet from the cereal, which transitions gradually to smooth espresso. Also unique to the cafe is the tropical Coconut Cold Brew ($7.50), where the subtle fruity sweetness and coffee brew come together in a refreshing concoction that’s great for beating the heat. And in a similar fashion, Maxi Coffee Bar serves up a novel combination of Miso Peanut Butter Honey Toast ($6) – sweet, salty and savoury all at once.

Nexus Coffee

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by NEXUS COFFEE (@nexuscoffeesg) on

Address: International Plaza #01-15, Singapore 079903
Opening hours: 7.30am – 4pm (Mon to Fri)

The menu at Nexus Coffee is lean and focused: chai, chocolate, matcha and coffee in its variations. This no-frills kiosk stands out with its teal blue exterior, but it is the coffee served that deserves special mention and makes you come back for more. To lend some variety, different beans are available for espresso and filter options, each with their own special profile. Keep things simple with a Black Coffee ($4), or beat the heat with an Iced Mocha ($6) – either way, you will find yourself with a caffeine boost that will lift your tired mind.

Bearded Bella

A post shared by JOLENE T. (@jolztx) on

Address: 8 Craig Road, Singapore 089668
Opening hours: 7.30am – 5pm (Mon to Thurs), 7.30am –11pm (Fri), 7.30am– 6pm (Sat & Sun)

Quite literally, Bearded Bella serves up winning cups of coffee. Its co- owner, Regina Tay, holds the title of Singapore Barista Champion 2016, and has under her belt experience as a barista in the coffee capital of Melbourne. There, she learned about its thriving coffee culture and sought to recreate her own back in her homeland. Those lucky enough can spot her behind the coffee machine, pulling shots made from a special house blend of thoughtfully sourced beans – carefully roasted in-house to create its delightful flavour profile. Prices start from $3.50 for a single espresso, which pairs well with their selection of homemade cakes and pastries.

Kebun

A post shared by ADD+Salty (@saltyaaron) on

Address: 531 Upper Cross Street #01-41, Singapore 050531
Opening hours: 10am – 7pm (Mon to Sat)

For a healthier, non-dairy option, try popping by the country’s first vegan-dedicated latte bar. Located opposite Hong Lim Food Centre, Kebun whips up vegan options of your favourite caffeinated drinks. Here, conventional milk is replaced with their special handcrafted cashew ‘mylk’ – which is made from premium, whole cashews that are said to be a healthier alternative. Try the Kebun Earl Grey Latte ($5) infused with the fragrant bergamot, or opt for the nutty Seoul Misugara Latte ($5.50) which comes with an aromatic blend of black sesame seeds, black beans, black and brown rice, and barley grains. Those looking for a gentler dosage of caffeine can also look forward to Kebun’s range of exotic tea blends (also vegan!).

Five Oars Coffee Roasters

A post shared by シンガポールを日々楽しむ! (@banbi4649) on

Address: 39 Tanjong Pagar Road, Singapore 088462
Opening hours: 8am – 10pm (Mon to Sun)

With a name like theirs, you know that this is a place that treats coffee seriously. Five Oars Coffee Roasters ticks all the boxes for the modern cafe-goer: clean, minimalist interior, an extensive brunch menu, and good cups of coffee. Beans are roasted in-house, and they serve the usual suspects of espressos ($3), pour-overs (from $6) and iced variants (from $5), which are executed with no faults. The food menu is also tempting enough for you to make a return during the weekends. Without the need to rush for deadlines and meetings, indulge in Insta-worthy dishes like the Truffle Benedict ($20) or Mentaiko Royale ($21) with a cuppa in hand, while enjoying the botanical-decorated surrounds.

Parallel

A post shared by SODAPIAH (@sodapiah) on

Address: 1 Raffles Place #B1-34, Singapore 048616
Opening hours: 7.30am – 9.30pm (Mon to Fri)

In need of a quick caffeine fix? Drop by the conveniently located Parallel (they have two outlets in the CBD). Raffles City is the brand’s second outlet, where they run regular $2 Friday promotions on their coffee menu for an affordable treat. For those familiar, Parallel makes their coffee using beans from specialty coffee roaster Common Man Coffee Roasters. Beyond just coffee, folks with a sweet tooth can get a healthy dose of sugar with their range of smoothies and acai bowls. Made without added fructose or syrups, Parallel serves up acai bowls (from $8.90) that come packed with natural goodness from ingredients like goji berries, sunflower seeds and nut butter.
