It’s less than 2 weeks to Christmas and if you REALLY still have no time to spare to do some shopping, then e-commerce is here to save the day! With gifts being delivered to you with just a few clicks, online shopping is something we (in our honest opinion) really can’t live without. Weekend List

11 Dec 2015 by Teenage

It’s more food and more shopping this weekend with Singapore Cafe Week coming up and Christmas just around the corner! If you’re running low on funds, check out our take on the Best Paying Part-Time Jobs in Singapore to earn that extra ka-ching!

VENETIA SNG, SENIOR WRITER

EAT: Populus Coffee & Food Co.

Populus-Coffee-Food-Co-Pancake

You won’t find your usual kind of brunch staple at this all-day breakfast hangout. Instead you’ll find a variety of brunch dishes like the Populus ‘Chicken Rice’ Donburi ($18), Lemon & White Chocolate Sundae ($14) and even Buckwheat Pancakes topped with berry compote, passionfruit curd, fresh fruit, ‘cornflake’ crumb and thyme infused pure maple syrup (pictured)! Time to ditch those Eggs Benedict I say!

Populus Coffee & Food Co. is located at 146 Neil Road, Singapore 088875

WATCH: Love The Coopers

Here comes all the Christmas/New Year flicks with mega casts and Love the Coopers is not unlike the rest. Family drama and everything else you can think of goes wrong, with the movie ending (most likely) in the most heart warming way. But what’s the holiday season like without catching a film like that with your family, makes you rediscover family bonds and the spirit of the holidays.

VISIT: Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay

Christmas-Wonderland-Gardens-by-the-Bay

If you’re not heading overseas for the holidays (like me *sobs*), soak in the Christmas atmosphere at the Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay! Get the Christmas carnival experience by twirling around in the ice skating rink, engaging in snowball fights with your friends and shopping/eating at the European-styled marketplace. Sounds like a bucket load of fun already!

SHOP: Zalora 1212 Online Fever Sale

Teenage_SC_FB

Don’t fret if you missed Black Friday and Cyber Monday, because ZALORA’s 1212 Online Fever sale is coming up. There’ll be irresistible deals spanning over fashion, beauty, lifestyle, food and even travel, so prep up for this mega sale by getting ready your wish-list before 12th December. I’ll probably be camping on the fashion and beauty sections, just in time for Christmas! Remember, it’s fastest fingers first guys, so get ready to overload your shopping carts!

The ZALORA sale will be held on 12th December. Check the sale out here

SHOP: Rakuten

bunmeido_01

Honestly, the bulk of my shopping is done online – receiving my items in the mail kinda feels like receiving presents! Since I’ve a lot of shopping to be done, especially in the Christmas season. Rakuten is pretty good for getting cute Japanese snacks. I’ve got my eye on Bunmeido, a seller that offers yummy Jap cakes that’ll be great for gatherings, or even a mid-day snack. There’s even a promotion for it going on right now, which offers 40X RSP (Rakuten Super Points) for every purchase. Check it out here

VISIT: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Event at VivoCity

Star_Wars_The_Force_Awakens

I can’t wait for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie, but till then, I’m gonna sate my appetite at the Star Wars exhibit at VivoCity. There’ll be a huge collection of Star Wars: The Force Awakens displays and collectibles, as well as interactive games. There’s even a huge Star Wars wall mural made entirely of LEGO bricks – it’s apparently the largest mural in Singapore… Tag us on Instagram (@TeenageMagazine) with your photos if you decide to head on down too!

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens event will be running till 20th December, at VivoCity atrium.

LISTEN: The Day – DAY6

If you’ve been keeping tabs on our Instagram/Twitter (you totally should btw), you should be more or less aware about the series of SGKStar2015 fanmeets we’ve attended last weekend. But amongst the acts, I must say that I’m pretty damn obsessed with DAY6. These super rookies are no run-of-the-mill idol group – not only are they fab at singing, all the members play their own instruments like a legit band (not to mention that all of ’em are equally cute as well). They may only be three months old, but they’ve got a killer debut album under their belt. Aside from ‘Congratulations’, you should definitely check out ‘Out Of My Mind’, ‘Colours’ and… basically every other track on The Day. Also, keep an eye out for our full coverage of DAY6 in Singapore!

EAT: Singapore Cafe Week

Singapore Cafe Week

As a fellow advocate of local cafe culture, I’m super psyched for the Singapore Cafe Week happening this weekend and the next – from 10th to 13th December, and 17th to 20th December. Organised by Nomnom, this gastronomic fest features a lineup of some of the top cafes that are no strangers to our lil’ red dot, including Curious Palette, Group Therapy, Froth and Holqa. Brunch is priced at $25, tea at $15, and dinner at $35. We’re drooling already!

Visit Nomnom’s website for more information.

VISIT: Winter at Booktique Christmas Fair

Booktique

Booktique’s having their first winter-themed celebration! There’ll be handmade crafts from indie artisans, Christmas carols, and even a live performance by local band Twigs & Vines. But that’s not all, the folks at Booktique are also organising a cool bookmarks exchange. We’re unfortunately too late for their deadline, but for those who’d like to know how it works, visit their Facebook event page for the steps. Regardless, this mini Christmas fair should be up the alley of all you biblophiles, so be sure to pop by!

Booktique is located at 1 Raffles Link #B1-17A CityLink Mall, Singapore 039393

Weekend List

4 Dec 2015 by Teenage

Looks like it’s gona be a fun-filled weekend with shopping to do, shows to watch and so many fan-meets to attend!

LISTEN: Nervous – Stopgap

Stopgap-Totems-Album-Launch

Known for delivering high energy grooves and lively performances, Stopgap has just released their latest single ‘Nervous’ from their first long play (LP) album! I love their music video for track, I won’t spoil any of it and just say that it’ll put a smile on anyone’s face.

The local indie-rock band will be debuting their album titled Totems at SCAPE* Ground Theatre on Friday, 4 Dec! Entrance is pay-as-you-wish but just show up anyway, they won’t turn anyone away. More details here.

GO TO: Sunset Pasar #2

Sunset-Pasar-2

If you didn’t know already, I’m a huge fan of flea markets and I do try to go to every one I spot. Sunset Pasar is an eclectic flea market of preloved, vintage & wares from a community of super fun fashion and lifestyle personalities, as well as a tightly curated selection of designers and topped off with an exciting line up of open mic performances (sign up if you’re up for it!).

Sunset Pasar #2 is located at Kilo Lounge, 66b Kampong Bugis Level 8, Singapore 338987

DO: Christmas Shopping

Christmas-Shopping

I have a love/hate relationship with Christmas shopping. I love shopping for gifts for my loved ones but absolutely HATE the crowd during the holidays. So instead of pushing it to the very last minute (again, like I do every year), I’ll get things rolling this weekend! If you’re clueless on where to start, why not check out this list of Best Christmas Beauty Gifts we’ve curated?

(RE)WATCH: 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards

When are the Mnet Asian Music Awards going to be held in Singapore again?! This year’s MAMA was filled with epic surprises to say the least. As a huge 2NE1 and BIGBANG fan, words can’t describe the feels I had when I saw them performing onstage, especially when 2NE1 came back as OT4 (Hello Bommie!). This weekend will be partially spent on replaying the entire show and wishing I could be there. Anyway, Venetia has the lowdown on the entire award show, so go read the deets here if you haven’t already.

ATTEND: Unstoppable 3

Unstoppable 3 - Epochal Times

Bii was one of the first artistes I interviewed (ever) back when I first joined Teenage. I remember how shy and polite he was! How could I miss out on seeing him in action again, now that he’s back in Singapore? Plus, Bii’s bringing two equally cute label mates that you guys would probably find familiar – Dino Lee and Ian Chen from hit Taiwanese movie, Our Times! The trio (now named Unstoppable 3) released a 10-track album, Epochal Times, where it’s filled with both group efforts and solo records. The boys are holding an autograph session and music showcase over the weekend, so stay tuned to our Instagram and Twitter for more updates. Between this and the SGKStar 2015, our feed’s gonna be extra interesting this weekend!

SHOP: Carouselland

Carouselland

I love it when digital platforms materialise in the real world (if that makes sense), thus I’m super excited to visit this ‘bazaar-party-fun-fest’! There are 70 over stalls filled with actual vendors from Carousell, but apart from shopping, shopping and more shopping, there are activities where you can try your hand at silkscreening, badge-pressing, or even join workshops where you can learn how to do soap-crafting, make jewellery, learn calligraphy, make candles, and more. Sign me up please!

Carouselland will be held at The Pavilion @ Far East Square on 5 & 6 December, from 11am to 8pm. More info here

LISTEN: Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa Part 2 – BTS

Man, am I blown away by the sheer awesomeness of this album. BTS has finally dropped the sequel to Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa, and every track is g-o-l-d: from the intense intro of ‘Never Mind’ that unravels the pent-up emotions of youth through aggressive lyrics, to ‘Butterfly’ which showcases the members’ sweeping, breathy vocals (we have a feeling this will probably be the follow-up track). But what fans have all been waiting for is the long-awaited MV of ‘Run’ which continues the story of ‘I Need You’. It’s super aesthetically-pleasing and all, but it leaves more question marks in my mind than expected. Allkpop’s theory sounds pretty legit though. Watch the MV above and tell us what you think!

ATTEND: SGKStar 2015

BTOB
GOT7

BTOB on Friday, Day6 on Saturday, SISTAR, Monsta X and GOT7 on Sunday… Talk about a K-pop filled weekend! These supergroups will be holding full-scale fanmeetings in Singapore as part of SGKStar 2015, a three-day festival showcasing the best of Korean culture. Grab your tickets if you haven’t! But for those who aren’t able to make it, don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for real-time updates!

SGKStar 2015 will be held at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre Hall F, from 4 to 6 December. Tickets available through SISTIC. For more info, visit Three Angles Production’s Facebook.

WATCH: She Was Pretty

She Was Pretty

Since my previous recommendations are both K-pop, no harm making my third to-do pick Korean too, right? She Was Pretty has been on my radar ever since it first came out, especially since it’s so relatable to my field. It’s basically a rom-com drama set in the premise of a magazine publishing company called The Most, where Hwang Jung Eum plays a junior editor and Park Seo Joon becomes the youngest deputy chief editor in South Korea – who, in a strange twist of fate, turns out to be her first love. Whoooops. Can’t wait to see how it all goes down!

10 Ways To Grow Your Instagram Following

3 Dec 2015 by Arissa Ha

Commanding an Instagram following of 110,000 (and counting) is no easy feat. We spoke to Rachell Tan (aka @pxdkitty) on how to improve your feed and gain more followers.

#1 Keep it spontaneous

A photo posted by Rachell Tan (@pxdkitty) on

“My Instagram posts are more focused on real-time updates on what I’m doing at the moment – it can be a shameless big-faced selfie, my outfit of the day or what I’m feeling.”

#2 Decide on the look of your feed

A photo posted by Rachell Tan (@pxdkitty) on

Whether it’s minimalist, monochromatic, pastel or whimsical, people like viewing a feed that is consistent and pleasing to the eyes. Find a style that suits your aesthetics, and center your posts around that theme.

#3 Be patient

Getting the perfect shot can take several failed shots. Don’t be afraid of trying out different angles or changing it up a little to get the shot you’re happy with.

#4 Be a story-teller

A photo posted by Rachell Tan (@pxdkitty) on

There are always people who are prettier or more fashionable. Set yourself apart by telling your followers a story about your daily life. It can be a shower-thought, or an insightful book which you came across.

#5 Haters gotta hate

As your following grows, so does the intensity of envy that grows amongst haters stalking your feed. “I usually delete nasty comments at first sight without brooding over it too much because I know how much it will affect my mood so I try not to remember them.” Best way to deal with haters is to ignore their words. Remember: Don’t feed the trolls.

#6 Appreciate the love

“I love it when people leave me heartwarming comments about my recommendations. I hope that they will know that I really appreciate them and their encouragements keep me going too!”

#7 Be consistent

“During my most active period on Instagram, I saw a significant hike in my follower count.” Update every day guys!

#8 Discover your forte

A photo posted by Rachell Tan (@pxdkitty) on

Make a note of which posts garners the most likes (it can be OOTDs, selfies, flatlays or photos of pets), and populate your Instagram feed with photos of that genre. It’s what you’re strong at, and probably the reason why people follow you.

#9 Go natural

The most beautiful light for taking photos is still natural light. Take advantage of fair weather to snap a few more photos.

#10 Put on your warpaint

A photo posted by Rachell Tan (@pxdkitty) on

Photos usually wash out the complexion, making you look pale. Pick highly-pigmented makeup like the ETUDE HOUSE Colour In Lips, or Play 101 Pencils to add a natural-looking flush when you take pictures of yourself.

Want to pick up makeup tips from ETUDE HOUSE and find out more about how  you can grow your Instagram following?
ETUDE HOUSE is inviting 15 Teenage readers and their friends to an exclusive workshop with Rachell Tan. There will be a makeup demonstration where you can learn how to enhance your looks and doll yourself up, plus attractive door gifts!

Jubilee-Walk-2015

Jubilee-Big-Walk-2015_Route

EAT: Max Brenner

Max Brenner

It’s gonna be a jam-packed weekend of event after event, but don’t forget to fill your stomach along the way! While you’re hopping from one place to another, I recommend dropping by Max Brenner if you’re in the area and craving for something a little indulgent. This specialty chocolate bar has a sound rep for its decadent pastries and beverages, but the Classic European Fondue ($25.90) is where its true legacy lies. It’s served with three towers of chocolate sauce and a small personal grill for you to toast those marshmallows. Mmmm.

Max Brenner is located at 1 Harbourfront Walk, VivoCity #01-116, Singapore 098585.

ATTEND: Neon Lights

Neon Lights

Calling all indie music devotees! Here’s a brand new music and arts festival for you to soak in the hipster vibes this weekend.
