Weekend List

29 Jan 2016 by Teenage

We recommend a healthy dose of St Jerome’s Laneway Festival 2016 this weekend, followed by other activities that’ll get you hyped up with the Lunar New Year festivities.

ATTEND: St Jerome’s Laneway Festival Singapore 2016

Laneway Festival Singapore 2016

I had a blast during last year’s St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, and I’ll bet 2016’s edition will not disappoint. I’m looking forward to catching international acts like CHVRCHES, The 1975, Flume, Grimes and more, as well as exploring the different stalls the festival has to offer. Stay updated on what’s going down by following our Instagram and Twitter feeds on Saturday (30 January)!

St Jerome’s Laneway Festival 2016 will be held on 30 January at The Meadow, Gardens By The Bay. More info here

SHOP: Chinese New Year Clothes

OhvolaPhoto: OhVola

If you haven’t gotten all your clothes prepped for the CNY festivities and you aren’t willing to brave the crowds in order to get ’em, I’d suggest shopping online. You’d be cutting it really close, but you’ll probably be able to your outfits in time if you order by this weekend, and choose express/next-day-deliveries or self-pickup. We have an awesome guide to our favourite local web stores (with info on delivery options), where you’ll definitely find something perfect.

Check out: 18 Online Stores To Shop At For CNY Clothes

EAT: PastaMania CNY Ravioli Set

PastaMania Ravioli Set

Usher in even more luck this Lunar New Year with PastaMania’s CNY ravioli set ($12.80)! The dish is chockfull of auspicious vibes, even down to its deliciously plump ravioli, which represents ‘fullness of fortune’. There are three scrumptious flavours to choose from, Porcini Mushroom, Salmon, and Ricotta & Spinach, which is making me hungry even just thinking about it.

The CNY ravioli set is only available from 18 Jan to 22 Feb at all PastaMania outlets except Far East Plaza.

SHOP & EAT: Gallery & Co.

Gallery & Co

Gallery & Co

If you’ve read our Weekend List on the first week of Jan, you’d probably have seen my recommendation on the new National Gallery Singapore. But besides being all artsy fartsy, there’s also a dreamy retail cum F&B space called Gallery & Co., where you can get your hands on minimalist designs, nosh on Southeast Asian flavours at the Cafeteria and have a cuppa or two at the Gallery Cafe. Just try not to be carried away with spamming OOTD shots because this entire place is basically an photogenic haven begging to be snapped at every turn. Really.

Gallery & Co. is located at National Gallery Singapore, City Hall Wing, 1 St. Andrew’s Road, #01-05, Singapore 178957.

CNY PREP: In Good Company

In Good Company

In Good Company

Here’s another option for you if you still haven’t done your CNY shopping. IN GOOD COMPANY just launched its latest additions to Capsule 7 and we’re totes lovin’ the vibrant palette that goes beyond reds and pinks. You’ll find loads of chic wearables and colourful accessories that you can mix and match. They’ve also got avant-garde versions of CNY goodies like Bak Kwa Cookies, Black Sesame Cookes and Pineapple Tarts up for sale, courtesy of Cafe Plain Vanilla. Psst… you can also get a set of 6 ombré red packets with every $250 spent at IN GOOD COMPANY’s E-store, ION Orchard, or TANGS.

IN GOOD COMPANY’s flagship store is located at ION Orchard, 2 Orchard Turn, #B1-06, Singapore 238801. Or you can shop online at their E-Store here.

LISTEN: 35xxxv – ONE OK ROCK

Yeah, so I’m well aware that I’m supposed to be preparing myself for Laneway, but part of me is still in a delirious state of withdrawals from ONE OK ROCK’s concert last week (check out: 5 Things That Only Happen At An ONE OK ROCK Concert). It’s seriously the best gig I’ve ever attended in awhile. If you’re a fan of hardcore, heavy-hitting rock, you should totally listen to their latest 35xxxv album because it’s truly a work of art – no exaggeration. For starters, try ‘Mighty Long Fall’, ‘The Way Back’ and ‘Memories’.

ONE OK ROCK’s 35xxxv (Deluxe Edition) is available to stream on Spotify.

Weekend List

15 Jan 2016 by Teenage

There’s something for everyone this week, from movie marathons, to cafe-hopping to meet and greets. Here’s what the Teenage team will be up to this weekend.

Arissa Ha, Deputy Editor

DO: Mourn Alan Rickman

This has been a rough week in entertainment especially with Alan Rickman lost to cancer (seriously 2016, we’re only two weeks in. Be nice). We love him for his works, but how do you even mourn someone you’ve never met? The world has taken to social media to express their grieve, and for some others have decided to set up a little memorial for Alan Rickman at King’s Cross Station and Universal Studios Orlando. For us, we’ll celebrate the legacy that he has left behind – watching all the films and interviews will remind us of what an awesome actor and person he was. We leave you with this.

 SHOP: Fashion Bunker

We’re not here to advocate reckless spending but with our great exchange rate against Australian dollar, it’s time to shop online! We love Fashion Bunker for its collection of contemporary Australian designers at high-street prices. They might be a tad expensive compared to brands like Forever 21 and H&M but the quality and timeless designs are well worth it. Perhaps it’s also time to splurge a little on CNY clothes?

RE-WATCH: Harry Potter

severus-snape-always

This week, the world lost Alan Rickman, a great actor and director. He has had many superb works, but the one I’ll remember him the most fondly for, will be his perfection of Severus Snape from Harry Potter. My first introduction to the series was thankfully through the book first, and Snape is the perfect antagonist, even more so than Lord Voldermort. After catching the film subsequently, I was convinced that there’s no one else in the world who could play the dark bat-like half-blood prince as well as Alan Rickman could. Thank you, for bringing Severus Snape to life and being such a huge part of creating the wondrous wizarding world that brought me much happiness, even till today. There have been many many tributes from Alan Rickman’s family, friends and fans, but this weekend, I’ll toast him by rewatching the entire Harry Potter series, where Alan brought Snape through a journey, from the most-hated professor at Hogwarts, into the most beloved in the wizarding world and beyond.

ATTEND: BubzBeauty Meet-And-Greet (16 January)

Beauty guru and YouTuber BubzBeauty is back in Singapore courtesy of Skin Inc, and she’s holding a meet and greet this Saturday (16 January), where you’ll be able to meet her (duh) as well as learn a beauty tip or two from the girl herself. We met her for a quick chat earlier on, where we had an interesting chat with Bubz – watch our space for the interview real soon.

Meet BubzBeauty on 16 January from 4-5pm at Scotts Square @ Skin Inc B1.

IMMERSE: Singapore Art Week 2016

Singapore Art Week 2016
Freely, Freely by Jane Lee

A bus tour traversing the horizons? Graffiti masterpieces on canvas? A realm where light and shadow collides? These are just a few of the many offerings at the fourth edition of Singapore Art Week. From 16 to 24 January, explore the world of visual arts with the diverse range of programmes taking place around the art precincts around Singapore. Look forward to unique tours, film screenings, gallery openings, hands-on workshops, art fairs and more.

Singapore Art Week 2016 is held from 16 to 24 January. Visit www.artweek.sg for the full programme line-up and a handy survival guide.

EAT: Fresh Fruits Lab

Fresh Fruits LabCredit: Justin Loh / Shining Head Media

One of my New year resolutions is to embrace a healthy lifestyle, and since I’m not a big fan of greens (don’t learn from me, kids!), I figure a good place to get my dose of fibre would be Fresh Fruits Lab. This whimsical cafe does experiential cold-pressed juices and fruit-infused sodas, served in quirky lab apparatus for us to channel our inner scientist. But if you’re not in the mood to eat clean, they’ve got a substantial brunch menu of pancakes, burgers and pastas that are all equally delish too. P/S: We’re giving away $20 vouchers from Fresh Fruits Lab! Here’s how you can win.

Fresh Fruits Lab is located at 351 Changi Road, Singapore 419818.

WATCH: Digimon Adventure Tri: Reunion

Digimon Adventure Tri
Credit: tanteichigo @ Tumblr

When Digimon first announced that they’ll be celebrating its 15th anniversary with a special film series (and it’s not just one film, but a six-part film series!!!) based off the very first Digimon Adventure, I could just swear my heart did a gazillion of somersaults upon hearing the news. I recently just finished watching the first part, Reunion, where Taichi and friends have grown up to be dashingly fine dudes and gorgeous babes, and they now have to deal with the new uncertainties of life. What’s more feels-inducing than seeing Agumon to the rescue, the gang showing up in full force with their Digi partners, and most importantly, the familiar angst-ridden bromance between Taichi and Yamato? #ICannotEven

The second film, Determination, will be released on 12 March!

DO: Yoga at The Yoga Co’s new studio

It’s been a while since I’ve attended a yoga class, but I’m really looking forward to visiting The Yoga’s Co’s new studio at Pahang Street (near Bugis). Drop in lessons are only $50 if you come with a buddy, so book your mats now!

The Yoga Co. is located at 10A Pahang Street, Singapore 198611.

SHOP: Comme Home

Comme-home-marble

Guess who’s still not over the marble trend? As a #flatlay aficionado, I love the use of marble slabs, trays and bowls in my styling. Comme Home has some pieces starting from $49 – totes affordable considering how good they look.

READ: Nimona

nimona

Set in the medieval times, Nimona is a graphic novel which follows the adventures of a young shapeshifter who applied to be the sidekick of a knight-turned-supervillian-scientist, Lord Ballister Blackheart. We promise you that this fantasty/sci-fi will have you in stitches. Check out the first three chapters online if you don’t believe us.

ATTEND: aMEI | AMIT UTOPIA World Tour

aMEI | AMIT UTOPIA World Tour

Mandopop queen a MEI was the true queen of breakup songs eons before Adele appeared on the musical horizon, and her songs still do a number on me no matter how many times I’ve listened to her classics. She’ll be coming to Singapore for her show this weekend and I’ll bet everything I own that her concert is going to be fantastic.

aMEI | AMIT UTOPIA World Tour will be held on 8 January at the National Stadium. Tickets from $68, more info here

SHOP: The Tinsel Rack Sale Bonanza (9-10 January)

Tinsel Rack Sale Bonanza

I never turn down an opportunity to shop, especially when there’re awesome bargains involved. That’s why I’m headed down to The Tinsel Rack’s Sale Bonanza, where there’ll be clothing, shoes, jewellery, watches, phone casings and more for sale at up to 80 per cent off! Also, there’s gonna be eye-candy present while you shop, with the likes of social media influencers like Ding Xuan (@twiggtwiggz) and Valerie Wang (@valeriewang) having a booth selling their pre-loved stuff there as well. Happy shopping!

The Tinsel Rack Sale Bonanza will be held from 9 to 10 January, at PoMo. More info here

 DIY: Nails

Nails

There’s a lot going on this weekend, so I probably wouldn’t have much time to fashion a full-scale manicure design. But this minimalistic nail design is very easy to achieve: simply glob on clear base polish, wait for it to dry before taping off each portion accordingly (or freehand it if you have steady hands), and paint away! Plus, this design goes with almost every outfit, so that’ll be very handy (pun fully intended).

ATTEND: EXO PLANET #2 The EXO’luXion in Singapore

EXO PLANET #2 The EXO’luXion in Singapore

By now, every hardcore EXO-L would know that the charming lads are gonna perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium this weekend, and we’re guessing you’re probably obsessively looping their tracks, memorising the fan chants, deciding what rad outfit to wear, or all of the above. You’re not alone; we’re just as excited as you are! BTW, tickets are still available at Sportshub if you wanna grab some last-minute tics.

P/S: We’ll be live tweeting/updating throughout, so be sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter!

VISIT: Polytechnic Open Houses

We’re having our Teenage Campus Run at Singapore Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic, and if you haven’t already checked out the various diploma offerings, tomorrow’s the last day. While you’re at it, don’t forget to pop by the Teenage booths because there’ll be awesome goodie bags to take home and loads of fun activities to do. Psst, if you’re visiting the SP Open House, you might even spot a wild Iron Man dolling himself up at the free makeup trial provided by Etude House.

APPRECIATE: National Gallery Singapore

A photo posted by Alyssa (@alyssagautama) on

We apologise for not talking about the new National Gallery Singapore earlier. From the majestic facade which features a gorgeous roof canopy down to the awe-inspiring artworks that send us back to the early days of Singapore, this is seriously one architectural eye candy not to be missed. The place’s pretty big, so make sure you do your homework before heading down. For the uninitiated, here’s a handy itinerary of what you should do there. You’re welcome!

Weekend List - Happy 2016!

31 Dec 2015 by Teenage

It’s officially 2016 guys! The festivities can get a tad hectic, so here are our suggestions on things to do during the first weekend of the New Year. From artsy fartsy brunches to renting an Airbnb apartment to saying goodbye to koalas at the zoo, there’s definitely gonna be something of interest for everyone!

Arissa Ha, Deputy Editor

SAY: Goodbye to koalas

Time flies when you’re having fun and in just a few days’ time, we’ll be bidding the koalas at the Singapore Zoo goodbye. Catch a glimpse of these furry marsupials before they head back home to Australia.

The Singapore Zoo is located at 80 Mandai Lake Rd, Singapore 729826.

SHOP: Year-end Sale

zara-sale

With Christmas Day over and 2015 coming to an end, you can expect stores clearing out their stocks to welcome the New Year. If you would like to do some redecorating, HipVan has 15% off all merchandise. But if you prefer visiting brick and mortar stores, most of your fave clothing stores like H&M, Mango, Zara, Aeropostale and Forever 21 are holding their Year-end sale right now. Time to shop for a new wardrobe for 2016!

STAY: D’Resort@Downtown East

dresort-2 dresort-01

Nothing spells year-end parties like a BBQ get-together with your best pals. Round up 2015 with a night’s stay at the newly revamped D’Resort@Downtown East. Inspired by nature, this 387-room resort comes in nine different room types, perfect for all parties of all sizes.

D’Resort@Downtown East is located at 1 Pasir Ris Close, Singapore 519599.

DO: Personal Reflection

 Personal reflections

As 31st December rolls around each year, I have a mini ritual where I’d find somewhere quiet to pen/type down my thoughts for the year: how it went, how I behaved, what I learned and experienced, what can be improved etc. Cliched as it sounds, I find it helpful because it acts like a chapter summation and revision type of thing if you will. Reflecting about the year helps me track how well it went, and how to make the following year an even better one! This year, I’m going to focus on how I’ve behaved throughout 2015. Have I changed for the better, or worse? How can I be a better daughter/sibling/friend to my loved ones? Don’t be afraid of self-reflection. Sometimes you might not like what you find, but I guess that’s the only way to make things better. As I grow older (gasp) and get busier and busier, it’s easy to change from each experience without noticing. I find that these little exercises help you stay in touch with yourself, or help to discover who you’re becoming.

STAY: Airbnb apartment

Singapore-airbnb
Credit: Airbnb

Don’t get me wrong – I enjoy parties as much as the next person does, but I thought I’d spend a quieter New Years Eve this year. At the very last minute, I decided to book an Airbnb apartment for a chill gathering  with my friends, and I very easily managed to book an affordable yet super comfy looking place! Not only is Airbnb great for finding cheaper alternatives to stay at abroad, it’s come in handy during times like this, where staycations are too expensive or even fully booked. If you’re planning to book one too, make sure you check out user and apartment reviews before going ahead with the booking, because it is a service after all. And you’d want to make your stay an enjoyable one, right?

DO: Work Out

RunningCredit: Nike

Year end festivities are great for the spirit but bad for the body, simply because most of us are busy gobbling up the good food that’ll usually be readily available at Christmas celebrations and new year gatherings. This weekend will be spent putting in hard work at the gym to lose all those unhealthy calories I’ve gained! Exercise kinda sucks (in my opinion), but it’s essential in order to keep looking good and staying healthy. If you’re not into running or going to the gym, there are plenty of options that’ll keep you entertained while you exercise. Check out Passport Asia for places that provide yoga, parkour, aikido, taekwondo, muay thai, gymnastics… the list is endless.

EXPLORE: Tanjong Pagar Railway Station

This one’s for all the nostalgics out there: news is out that the iconic Tanjong Pagar Railway Station will be opening its doors for the New Year on 1 January from 9am to 6pm. It’s a once-in-a-blue-moon chance for you to bust out those snap-happy fingers on the historical grounds, while the artistic types can put their skills to good use by submitting sketches of the national monument. Who knows, you might be able to see your artwork on display the next time it’s open to public!

WATCH: MBC Gayo Daejun

MBC Gayo Daejun 2015

For the K-pop geeks who prefer staying away from the festivity malarkey, one countdown fest not to be missed is the MBC Gayo Daejun. It’s the last of the big three year-end music extravaganza in South Korea (with SBS having more misses than hits, and KBS showing ’em how it’s done), and we certainly hope this one’s gonna end off the year with a big bang. The line-up includes EXO, Girls’ Generation, SHINee, INFINITE, 4minute, BTS, GOT7, VIXX, B.A.P etc.

You may live stream MBC Gayo Daejun 2015 on K-pop Stream.

BRUNCH: The Artistry

The Artistry

If you’re looking for a cosy suppper pit-stop after the fireworks and countdown parties, how ’bout ringing in 2016 the artistic way at The Artistry? The cafe cum art gallery will be holding a special overnight brunch service (yes, brunch!) from 10pm today till 6am the next day. Here, you can sip on espresso martinis while savouring chili crab burgers, freshly-made pancakes and PBJ french toasts from dawn till dusk. We couldn’t think of a more decadent way to start off the New Year!

P/S: Thanks for supporting for us the past year, the Teenage team wishes all our awesome readers a lovely 2016 ahead!

Weekend List - Merry Christmas!

25 Dec 2015 by Teenage

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The Teenage team recommends activities, music and Pinterest-DIYs to make this festive season (and long weekend) an even better one.

VENETIA SNG, SENIOR WRITER

VISIT: Treasures of the World from The British Museum at National Museum of Singapore

Treasures of the World from The British Museum

If you want to head to somewhere that isn’t so Christmasy, head on down to the National Museum of Singapore and explore artefacts at this highly-anticipated exhibition from the British Museum in London! Come face to face with the “unlucky mummy” falsely rumoured to have sunk the Titanic, marvel at gold jewellery from ancient Mesopotamian graves and be fascinated by the magical transformation mask from the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America. Admission is free for all students and guided tours are available too!

National Museum of Singapore is located at 93 Stamford Road, Singapore 178897

MAKE: Easy Christmas Treats

Easy-Christmas-Treats

Having guests over to your place for some festive celebrations but wayyy behind on food preparation (like me)? If you don’t mind making some DIY bites, here are some really easy treats you can cook up in this short period of time! I’m going to give these Christmas Tree Brownies a go, they look super cute and are the perfect door gifts!

LISTEN: All I Want For Christmas Is You – BOM&HI

This is the perfect emo song to listen for all you Black Jacks (including me) out there. All I want for Christmas is 2NE1 to make a comeback! I miss Bom so much I can literally listen to this song all day pining over her voice and her 4D personality. Do you guys remember how perfect 2NE1’s MAMA 2015 performance was? *sobs*

JOHANNA TEO, WRITER

WATCH: Ip Man 3

By now, I’m pretty convinced that there’s no better actor to play the role as legendary Wing Chun master Ip Man like Donnie Yen. In this third film, Ip Man stands against a crooked property developer played by none other than Mike Tyson in what’s definitely gonna be an epic showdown – also is it me or does the term ‘property developer’ not sound as menacing as it is on film? Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to seeing Yen kicking ass onscreen like he’s done in the previous two titles!

LISTEN: ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ – Ariana Grande and Larry Lovestein (Mac Miller)

Everyone’s recommending their pick of Christmas songs, so here’s mine! I especially love Ariana Grande and Mac Miller’s version of ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. There’s just something about the teasing lyrics and the subtle way the tune brings about the whole ‘crackling fire, snowy night’ feel that truly paints the perfect picture of Christmas to me. Happy coincidence: Ariana Grande’s our January 2016 cover girl for the first time ever, so go on and grab a copy of Teenage yeah?

DIY: Marble Nails

A video posted by Nails Tutorial (@nailsartvidss) on

I’m straying away from the usual red, green, glitter trends that adorn nails everywhere during this festive season, and marble nails are a great way to appear polished (no pun intended) yet stylishly appropriate for the entire season. Plus, it’s easy enough – all you need is some cling wrap and a few polish shades and you’re good to go! Tip: make sure your base coat is properly dried before proceeding on to paint on the colours.

VISIT: The Projector

The Projector
Credit: Justin Loh

If braving the crowd isn’t exactly your idea of a fun Christmas weekend, how ’bout seeking refuge away from the downtown madness at The Projector instead? This hipster-worthy alternative cinema showcases a carefully-curated roster of cult favourites, indie productions, local films etc. Grab a seat on their retro-cool flip-up chairs and catch the premiere of Carol on Christmas Eve, amongst other notable offerings such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Assassin, Macbeth and more. Check out The Projector’s Films & Events page for the complete schedule. And if you’ve gotten tickets to the screenings today, take a peep under your seats for a nice lil’ surprise!

The Projector is located at 6001 Beach Road, #05-00 Golden Mile Tower, Singapore 199589.

WATCH: White Christmas

White Christmas

For those of you who are heading over to your BFF’s house to chillax or simply lazing around at home, and maybe you’re too spoilt for choice on which Christmas flick to watch, I’ve got a recommendation for y’all. Don’t be fooled by its nondescript name though: White Christmas is a Korean mini series chockfull of gorgeous ulzzang hunks and babes, and while you might dismiss it as your typical rom-com trope, you’ll be surprised to find out that it’s anything but. The story’s set in a prestigious high school where all the students have already gone home for Christmas, only 8 stayed behind. Each of them receives a mysterious letter:

I kept thinking about it. When did it all begin?
You tainted me, made me pitiful.
You made me a monster in the corner.
You silenced me.
You ridiculed my false hopes.
You took the only thing I had and put it around your neck.
I held out my hand and you let go.
You deleted me from your eyes.
Finally, you overtook me.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
After 8 days, walk up the path by the Zelkova tree.
Under the clock tower, you will find someone dead. The night that Jesus was born, I curse you.

Well… not so much of a bubbly White Christmas drama now, is it? This show will send chills down your spine in the most intriguing, yet humanly satisfying way. Watch it and let us know how it fared in the comments below!

LISTEN: Sing For You – EXO

Following Venetia’s suggestion, here’s yet another emo track for all the depressed souls who love a good cry every now and then. Not sure why, but EXO always seemed to be sad during Christmas – ‘Miracles in December’ in 2013, ‘The Winter’s Tale’ in 2014, and now, ‘Sing For You’. This heart-wrenching ballad features the vocals of all nine members instead of the usual trio, as they waxed lyrical with intricate scenes that depict loneliness whenever they’re alone. Of course, fans can’t help but to dream up possible connections to the members who left the group… Sigh. Big hugs to all the EXO-Ls reading this!

Happy holidays everybody!
