5 Easy Ways To Treat Sunburn

20 Jun 2016 by Venetia Sng

Despite applying and reapplying that sunscreen to protect your precious skin from sun damage, you still end up with this painful, itching, and swelling sunburn. Don’t let it spoil your holidays! Here are 5 easy ways you can treat that sunburn effectively!

#1 Avoid Soap

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

The last thing you want to do after getting a sunburn is to strip your skin of moisture and irritate your skin further, and bathing with regular body wash does just that. If you must use soap, go for something mild like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($21.90), avoid hot baths for the time being and shower in cold water for some sunburn relief.

Tip: Gently pat your skin dry after showering, rubbing causes the skin to be more irritated!

#2 Tea Bag Those Eyes

Have burned and swollen eyelids? Whip out those tea bags, soak it in cool water and let it rest on your eyelids to decrease swelling and for some relief. Tea contains tannic acid which contains ingredients that have a protective effect on the skin.

#3 Aloe Vera Goodness

Treating Sunburn Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is our go-to remedy whenever we have sunburns. Trust us, it’s the most effective home remedy we’ve tried. Simply break off a leaf, remove the skin and apply the juice onto areas you wish to treat. It may be slimy but no frets, it’ll dry up in no time and you can wash it off with water right before heading to bed. Do test a small area first to make sure you’re not allergic.

Tip: Get an aloe vera plant for the house, it doesn’t get any fresher than that. Plus, pay just once for the plant and get a lifetime supply of aloe vera – that is if you take good care of the plant and it doesn’t die.

#4 Moisturise

Nivea Intensive Moisture Body Milk

No matter sunburns or not, moisturising skin with body lotion is one of the most important things everyone should do. While your skin is still damp, apply the body lotion, we recommend Nivea Intensive Moisture Body Milk ($9.90), for maximum absorption.

Tip: Chill the lotion in the fridge for added relief.

#5 Stay Hydrated

Treating Sunburn Watermelon

We all know water is essential for good skin so rehydrate yourself by drinking extra liquids! You can try sports drinks which helps replenish electrolytes immediately or go for that extra serving of fruits. One large wedge of watermelon provides more than 1 cup of water. Always remember that a balanced diet helps provide the nutrients your skin needs to regenerate.
