Six years ago, a 12-year-old boy catapulted to viral-dom after a video of him covering Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ captured the attention of everyone on the Internet. Fast forward to now, the little boy we used to freak out over has grown into a fine young man, and is rapidly becoming one of the rising pop stars to watch. Meet Greyson Chance, the guy with the deep pipes who Lady Gaga herself is a fan of. In an exclusive phone interview, we collected 8 fun tidbits you probably didn’t know about the American singer-songwriter (“Well, I only murdered a couple of people,” he quips) – post-puberty woes, late-night shenanigans, love for hamburgers and all.
#1 He wasn’t fond of his new voice at first
“When I was going through puberty, everyone in the industry was like ‘Oh it’s not that dramatic, your voice changed [that’s all]’. I’ll be the first one to say that it’s a very, very dramatic change. But you know, you just kinda have to roll with the punches. On the brighter side, having a much lower voice than what I sound like back in the day, does help to add a little bit more texture to my music.”
#2 He’s totally not vegan (hear that, tabloids?)
“I remember there was this article from a tabloid magazine spreading around saying that I was a vegan and I was throwing tantrums backstage about not having the right kind of diet. No offense to vegans, but I’m very non-vegan. And I’m pretty sure I was biting down on a hamburger while reading it.”

“It happened a couple of times: I’d be at a restaurant, looking at my phone, and come across a picture of me eating at that restaurant. But when I look around, I wouldn’t be able to see or find the person who took it. That’s always been really creepy. So if we happen to be eating at the same restaurant, just come up to me and say hello. Don’t just snap a picture, tweet it at me, and get me all scared (laughs).”
#4 He hopes to get a motorcycle
“I have a vintage 1966 Ford Mustang back home at Oklahoma and there were many late nights where I’d be driving down with my friends, just spending time and having fun with people that I love and people that love me. Hopefully my mom won’t see this article because she might kill me, but I do plan on getting a motorcycle soon. I’d probably drive around Oklahoma again, or simply be out in the middle of nowhere in an open road. That’d be really fun.”
#5 He’s bad at math
“The last thing I googled was a calculus question that I was trying to cheat on, because I’m still in high school and I’m very bad at all things math-related.”
#6 He’s a fanboy of Sam Smith
“I’ve been a big fan of Sam Smith ever since he put out his first piece of music. I met him backstage at Ellen and he’s super nice and just a really down-to-earth guy. I would love a collaboration with him, but I think he’s probably a very busy man.”
#7 He’s an old rock soul at heart
“I collected vinyls with my parents, so I’d listen to the old Motley Crue, Journey, R.E.M and all the classic rock stuff. But in the modern age, I also love pop, indie and whatever’s just cool. And that’s the great thing about music nowadays; it’s so accessible that you can be up to date with both the past and new artistes.”
#8 He loves Singapore
“Singapore is one of my favourite cities in the world. I’m super excited to be back and let everyone hear my new music. It’s gonna be a very fun trip.”
