Can all the Star Trek fans in the room please stand up! We’re so stoked that the third film of the franchise reboot is finally hitting the screens this week! We give you a refresher of what happened in the first 2 films of the series plus check out the super cool individual posters of the cast in the gallery above!
The crew of the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, are attacked by a seemingly unstoppable wave of unknown aliens, forcing them to abandon ship. Stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, the crew find themselves in conflict with a new and ruthless enemy.
If you can’t remember or didn’t watch the first 2 films of the series, here’s a recap of what happened to the two main characters in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness! Warning: Spoiler alert!
James T. Kirk
Star Trek: Kirk’s dad, George Kirk, died as a hero in a kamikaze attack against the Romulans when they attacked Federation starship USS Kelvin. Captain Christopher Pike convinced him to join the Starfleet Academy and he somehow ended up captaining USS Enterprise when Captain Pike was captured by the Romulans. Long story short, he saved the day and the Romulans were destroyed.
Star Trek Into Darkness: Kirk screwed up a mission at the start of the movie, got stripped of his title and ends up as first officer to Captain Pike (yet again). Khan killed Pike in an attack against the Starfleet and Kirk goes on a rampage to revenge the death of his mentor. But the admiral of Starfleet was the real baddie using Kirk the whole time to start a war with the Klingons. He died, but was revived using Khan’s blood as it has regenerative powers. Long story short, Kirk saved the day, the admiral died, Khan was re-frozen and no war was started.
Spock
Star Trek: Born to a Vulcan father and human mother, Spock was looked down on ever since he was young. Though he was accepted into the prestigious Vulcan Science Academy, he join Starfleet instead (just ’cause he can). His home planet Vulcan was destroyed by the Romulans as an act of revenge and he met Spock from the future (129 years to be exact)! Long story short, he helped save the day and no longer hates Kirk.
Star Trek Into Darkness: Kirk saved Spock’s life at the start of the movie and Spock being Spock, feels that it was only logical that they should have left him to die as they messed up the mission all because they wanted to save him. Fast forward to the part when Kirk dies, Spock finally realised how much they mean to each other (in a brotherly way), beats the hell out of Khan for revenge and after Kirk was revived, the BFFs are now inseparable.
Special Mention: Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chakov
Our favourite navigator Pavel Chakov best moment was when he had to replace as the chief engineer of the Enterprise after Montgomery “Scotty” Scott resigned in Star Trek Into Darkness.
Actor Anton Yelchin was found by friends pinned between his car and a brick pillar outside his home, in what was described as a freak accident. He was pronounced dead later that day at the age of 27.
Star Trek will be on screens on 21 July!
