Shakespeare in the Park - Romeo and Juliet

26 Apr 2016 by Venetia Sng

Shakespeare in the Park is back this year with Romeo and Juliet! Brought to you by the company that has captivated thousands each year with its successful productions of The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. Spread your picnic blanket under the stars and relish in the greatest love story ever told–.

But this may be the last Shakespeare in the Park by the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) for a while, as the non-profit charity can no longer sustain the increasing costs required to stage the annual production.

For almost a decade, SRT has championed what has become a beloved staple in Singapore’s cultural calendar. We lose money each year despite healthy ticket sales. Our Board have supported incurring a loss because we all passionately believe that it is important to subsidise tickets to make Shakespeare in the Park accessible, especially for students.

Over the past couple of years, the losses incurred have increased substantially. This is primarily due to increasing manpower costs. As a small non-profit charity, we can’t afford to sustain deficits of this magnitude.
